But yeah, already had nearly everything on Valve Complete package, and I preorder Portal 2 yesterday so that's actually somewhat frustating.

I have to say I'm very disappointed in them. I also expect they knew that the people with the golden potatoes are most likely their biggest fans/hardcore gamers that already own the majority of their catalogue and have pre-purchased/ordered Portal 2.

EDIT: Also, has any actually got the promised potato sack Portal 2 bot skin? All I had in my backpack was the Mann co hat and Potato Hard Hat.

This is why I didn't get pulled into the ARG. I had no interest in doing it and as such thought it would be better left to people who would experience fun doing so without hoping to get Portal 2 10 days early etc.

I got a lot out of this ARG and really enjoyed my time with it as well as the challenge of the Golden Potato, and I think the reward was pretty cool for me (basically got CS, a bunch of Half-Life expansions, and pride; and I had the game open and ready to play at 12:01).

I seem to be in the minority, though. At the very least it was mismanaged.

I was extremely frustrated by this aspect too despite ardently defending the experience up til now. Although I suddenly do have this extra copy I cannot explain, so maybe it is a result of that and I can't really complain.

I'm usually one of the biggest pro-Valve guys you can find but I think they handled this a bit wrong. The fact it was on a grand scale was amazing, but it probably has alienated a few people. One of the few examples I can think of where Valve's PR hasn't been 100% awesome.

... Still, I decided to buy the PS3 version for the free PC copy and to co-op easily with my girlfriend, and as a result won't be playing it until Thursday, so to all of you with it on Steam now I say a big fuck you. Such. A. Long. Wait.

I haven't agreed with much of your criticism of this event thus far, but I have to say this is a compelling point. Pre-ordering essentially got us nothing* for $44.99, not pre-ordering would have landed us a free copy of the game.

*again, I mysteriously have this extra copy now. So maybe they're slowing giving them to golden potato-heads that preordered and this is all groovy. But I seem to be the only one so far.

As much as I am loving the game, the store on launch is just showing how shameless Valve has become at this point when it comes to making money. Animations and skins, being sold for $2, $5, and $7.50 a piece. The MannCo store was launched 3 years after TF2 came out, and after the game had been on sale for as little as $2.50 (or $5) at times. I could forgive that. Seeing Portal 2 launch with $85 worth of cosmetic content is pretty disappointing. I realize it doesn't affect anything in the end, as the content is just cosmetic, but it's disappointing nonetheless. It's en route to validating a business model we thought Valve stood against for a long time now.

Combine that with this shameless marketing ploy, and yeah...

Most of us weren't expecting much. But the way they handled the prize just ended up rewarding those who have not supported Valve and giving nothing to long term supporters. It's not the best message to send. Not to mention, since the prize included Portal 2, I now consider it as a disincentive to pre-ordering any of Valve's products in the future, in hope of a similar event happening.

Valve deserves our money for the amazing games they make...however they're hardly small enough to warrant giving donations.

The store won't affect me as I won't buy anything from it anyways, but I am still disappointed in the direction that Valve has been heading with MannCo, this past weekend, and the reveal of this store.

I suppose if I were to look at it in a positive light, I would say that having the store there is probably going to be justification for Valve to keep supporting Portal 2 post-launch.

They've got non cosmetic items in TF2...not hard to believe it's going to spread to other games. This is just setting a precedent at this point.
