Various Problems With Tiger/What Should I Do?

I have a bunch of things to explain/ask, so I figure I'd start a new Tiger related thread.

Alright, so I installed Tiger the other night and have had a few problems. Here they are in short order:

- certain windows when trying to move, will freeze or lag.
- Quicktime will choke on certain files that offered no problem in 6, needing a force quit.
- the iTunes widget either doesn't work or there is a severe lag.
- icons on the desktop won't "wrap" (if I create desktop icons at it reaches the bottom on the screen, instead of starting a new row at the top, they'll just pile on-top of each other), though this only happens at certain icon resolution
- when logging on, external discs (I always have my firewire drive hooked up) sometimes won't appear, necessitating the need to log off and re-logging on.
- when I have a TextEdit document, instead of it taking 0.5 seconds to save, it now takes almost 5 seconds, and brings out the spinner, which is totally ridiculous
- once already, my path to my custom desktop picture in the system preferences was lost
- Automator is totally fucked. Not only does it label files incorrectly, but sometimes files will go totally missing without a trace. I've done numerous controlled tests and have determined that its the program and not some stupid mistake on my part.

... I already know that iTunes widget is crap for everyone, and many have suggested deleting the desktop/finder preferences to fix the piling icon problem, but nothing has worked.

BTW, I used easy upgrade to get from 10.3.9 to 10.4. I'm thinking about doing it re-installing, this time using the archive and install method.

But what exactly is the advantage of doing it this way? If I archive and install, I'll choose to import my home folder automatically. Plus if my installed apps are still there, preference files and all, what exactly is being updated?

Should I even update at all, and just wait for 10.4.1. For those of you here that deal with the Apple Dev. community who have access to the list of bug fixes, are any of my problems outlined and on tap to be fixed.

As always, any help is much appreciated.

I'm having similar problems in the speed/freeze realm of Tiger myself.

I've found myself, now, having to restart my comp about 4 times... I haven't restarted my comp from freezing in AGES... and now... since the upgrade... 4-5 times. Crazy.

Quicktime is shitty for ALOT of people right now. I started a thread on the Discussions board on the Apple website and tons of people were complaining about QT7... it's really been a hassle for us all (well... those that don't have a G5... well done Apple).

It's like... for things that I find running quicker... I find other that are slower. Not sure there is much we CAN do... but I do know that an update is due out shortly. Hang in there.

It's funny... that's all I've been thinking about since Tiger came out. I was running around my room saying it like Sagat did...

...I'm such a nerd sometimes.

You may as just want to go ahead and try an Archive & Install -- I did when I installed Tiger from 10.3.9 on my 15" PB Rev. C and had no problems. Expose seems slightly choppier, but everything else seems to run just fine. I installed Tiger two days ago on my parents' iMac G4 and had even less problems there, though once again, I opted for Archive & Install. As far as I know, A&I simply installs a fresh copy of the OS files and simply restores each user's Home folder's contents entirely (paths, keychains, prefs, etc). I haven't had any problems with my external USB drive showing up, so I'm a bit surprised by some of the problems you're having, although I'm aware that Tiger is far from bug free at the moment.

Aim for the commander's cupola. The Tiger's weakest armor is located on the top of its turret, on the rear top armor over the engine, and of course the belly armor. Beware of support infantry.

BUY A MA..oh, wait. Nevermind.

[edit]Seriously, I would try permissions fix, followed by archive & install, just to make sure there isn't any 10.3 baggage screwing up your Tiger install.

WHO DEY!?
It won't touch anything. You should still back up in any case. I recommend always doing an archive and install, because it gives you a clean system folder with which to work.

Yes, archive and install is the only 'safe' way to install Tiger. It won't touch your programs or any of the stuff in your home directory, and it won't get messed up by junk that's already on your system that won't work properly under Tiger.

Last I've heard, Apple is trying to fast track 10.4.1. 10.4, as I said earlier, has some issues and they would have done better just waiting until WWDC to get another month of bug fixes in.

I can't access my video files from my Sony CyberShot camera I just got a week ago
it worked fine before I installed Tiger

10.4.1 is coming in a few weeks with many bug fixes :D

Both AppleInsider and independent MacRumors sources claim that Apple has seeded the first builds of 10.4.1 to developers. The build is said to fix more than 20 bugs already reported to Apple regarding various software and hardware incompatabilities with Tiger. Key issues regarding stability and reliability of the OS as a whole are the focus, along with user issues with certain D-link networking equipment.

According to the rumor site, the forthcoming update is expected to be released mid to late-May.
