Vatican outcry over Playstation Ad

What's the big deal? Shouldn't the church be more focused on larger issues? Like the molestation of their younger followers and shit?

I agree, but this is still a rather tasteless ad IMO.

Instead of INRI, it should be circle, triangle, x, and square.

pffff, if God didn't like playstations and playstation ads then why did he invent them?

God invented the Gamecube. Satan invented the other stuff. And the Wonderswan color. That is Satan's work too.

You guys are all going to hell.

Especially Stinkles. A special hell where there is only Xbox.

I stand by my wonderswan claim. And see? It works as an avatar, but it is still a lousy ad.

Yeah, I agree. The ad is silly, but I still think it's crazy and awesome. Not awesome in the traditional sense. Just because the guy has such a dumbo-eatin' grin, I can't help but laugh!

You're right, that'd be more chic to appeal to Borys' soccer hooligan/Euro trash friends. If anyone has one of those, or a UR Not E, I'll paste it on.

It sure did strike up some controversy, which I assume was the point. As for the ad itself, it's not anything special IMO. And I think people who are really offended need to cool down...I think the ad itself is quite innocent...I mean, it's not like the guy is smashing a statue of Jesus with a Playstation. I can understand the Vatican being upset about it though.

Screwing with religion, smart move sony the last industry the screwed with religion lost the battle. Maybe sony should have done more homework on this subject. The Passion of Christ sure shut up Hollywood after they failed to stop the movie from coming out... Big Time.... That's ok try bring those ads over here and see how far you'll get...... We'll pack those bags and send you clear back to Japan if you try that crap over here....

Talk about an overreaction. The US branch of Sony won't do it because they don't do racy ads like that. But its what's worked for Sony of Europe. They did an ad where the camera focuses on a womans big breasts while they bounce around and the it fades into a clip of WRC3. It wouldn't fly over here but it works fine in Europe.

WRC3 ad

Their pornstar ad is racy too.

somehow i think if this was an ad mocking homosexuals or some such that people here would be outraged.

The general argument is that homosexuality and race is not a choice, whereas religion is and therefore is open to mocking/seething satire/parody/jokes, etc....

In Italy we say:

"Palate di me, bene o male non importa, basta ne parliate"

:)

Babelfish to the rescue:

Shovelfuls of me, do not import well or badly, enough of it speak

My thoughts exactly.

Interesting move on Sony's part. Very bold move to piss off the Vatican. We'll see where they end up soon enough.

Everyone's pissing off the vatican in europe right now, they're just jumping on the bandwagon :P

It'll probably be the same as what happened when Sony registered the name "Shock and Awe". Now most don't even remember or care that they did that.

Sony is moronic for releasing this in Italy. Ya - a country that is predominantly Catholic is really going to take it well if your ad for a video game console draws direct allusions to one of the most important symbols of the death of the Catholic deity.

What's next - a rendered Mother Theresa or Virgin Mary playing Dance Dance Revolution....

Hey - I'll bet that would be a big hit in India (or not).....

Yeah, you're probably right. I remember their attempt to trademark "Shock and Awe" but it was quickly forgotten. This will be swept under the rug in a similar fashion.

Yay stereotypes. I'm pretty sure Jewish stereotypes wouldn't fly here, so leave your prejudices at the door where they belong.

Neither do I but it's a bit presumptuous to judge a religion by knowledge gained from an episode of South Park, which seems to be the GAF equivalent of a degree in theology.

i disagree, but thats not really the point. the ad is very tasteless and offensive, but hey, do whatever for that almighty dollar.

I'm sure this is not Game Discussion material, but you disagree with what? That religion is a choice, or that homosexuality/race is not a choice? Or that because of this, religion should be open to satire/parody/jokes?

I agree it's tasteless, a little goofy, and even shitty. But I do find the reactions hilarious, since that's pretty much what I live for.

I half expect Sony to ponder a new series of ads now...

"PS3 -- Gaming's FINAL SOLUTION!" (nice shot of a soldier with little Sony logos replacing swastikas -- or perhaps a crowd of folks being led to a building with a smokestack, each person wearing the logo of a competing organization on their shirts.)

"The end is near for the competition." (picture of Martin Luther King being shot, with a close up of a PS3 and a rifle)

I mean, this would be akin to running ads in the Middle East show Mohamed on the Black Rock, playing a fighting game and surrounded by girls in binikis.

I really don't care who you are -- taking a person who was murdered and is held very dear to a group of people and making LIGHT of their death/suffering as an attempt to sell your products is just crass beyong belief.
