vg247-PS4: new kits shipping now, AMD A10 used as base, final version next summer

Joshua from Verge just now finished interview with Kaz Hirai, and he asked him about PS4. :D

Kaz told him that the sony is very satisfied with the growth of the PS3 business, and that they are still planing to reach 10 year lifecycle with that console.

Well they screwed my predictions over with their 4k push. Their download mantra seems to be: Go big or go home.

Kaz was also very clear that there will be no imediate standard for physical 4K media, and that internet is the only way for that content to be distributed in the near future [few years]. He wants to at least standardize 4K video format, but even that will not be easy [camcoder files, reproduction on all 4k players, etc].

Great interview [video is maybe still processing]

A very nice interview. One thing struck me though about the interview and that is how they want to concentrate on Japan and Europe for their mobile division where they are currently in a very good position and continue to gain marketshare there before concentrating on the US. It seems a bit risky to move in late to the US and just have Samsung and Apple gain brand recognition to such an extent. I hope this is not their strategy for the gaming division as well.

Sony are pushing the technology envelope again. Just in time for the PS4. Strap yourself in because it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Quite odd, as they apparently aren't releasing Xperia ZL in EU at the same time as in NA.

Sony Invents Eye Tracking Contact Lenses for Next-Gen Games.

Sony's most recent invention relates to gazing technology which was first touched on in October. In this latest gaming related patent application filing, Sony continues with methods, systems, computer-readable media, and articles of manufacture that relate to eye gaze tracking using contact lenses. The contact lenses could be used both for gaming and viewing 3D information on a television.

According to Sony, eye gaze may be tracked using magnetic sensors and magnetized contact lenses and/or using video-based sensors and reflective contact lenses. In one embodiment, magnetic sensors may be placed on a video game console or near the head of a user of a video game console to track the location and polarization of magnetized contact lenses.

In another embodiment, video-based sensors may be used to track the location of reflective contact lenses transparent to normal light and reflecting one or more portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

In further embodiments, magnetic sensors and video-based sensors may be used in combination to track a magnetized contact lens with one or more reflective patterns, provide blink detection, and track multiple users. Other video-based sensors may be used to locate the head position of a user and prune noise from other magnetic or other light sources. Additionally, tracking information from contact lenses of both eyes may be used to improve accuracy.

Magnetized and reflective contact lenses may be utilized to browse menus of computer applications, control virtual characters of video games, select-drag-manipulate objects, and perform other trained or learned actions responsive to a user's eye movement or eye gaze. In further aspects, magnetized and reflective contact lenses can be used in any application that can benefit from eye and/or gaze tracking.

...In some aspect, magnetized contact lenses can optionally be designed such that they can be worn on top of a regular contact lens which a user might be using for improving his/her vision.

Why doesnt sony ever patent anything that makes sense?

MS patented in game music and cross game chat and the driving line in Forza. Nintendo patented that awesome D pad.

Sony patents this weird shit.

That's a really nice interview. Good questions and good answers. I really believe in Hirai, i think he's the right man for the job and Sony surely is better managed now than compared to the lead up to PS3.

I think the only thing you can extract from that is that gaming is very important to them, and that they haven't lost the DNA to try to go always for the best.

I've been saying, and now i believe, that there's zero chance of Sony going mediocre on the PS4, saving money, doing average stuff.

Wouldn't make sense.

It's just sad that CEO's always talk about that regarding NDA stuff. It wouldn't hurt anyone to just accept the fact that a PS4 exists and he could say something "it's great, you will love it and it will be released this decade".

But me being a journalist i end up just jealous of the press guys, because off the record talk is always best talk, so they are likely to have a bunch of interesting tidbits that we have no idea.

Your post represents exactly what I was just about to post. I'm so happy, because this really is conclusive proof straight from the horses mouth that we're in for a big fat treat with the PS4, and I cannot god damn wait for the announcement!

With Netflix demonstrating 4K streaming at CES on Samsung TVs, I wouldn't be surprised if they won't be at least one source of 4K content for the PS4. PS3 is already one of the few SuperHD and 3D Netflix streamers (both of which skipped the 360) so it seems like a natural fit next gen.

Really dont care about 4k though. Sony should just focus on making the PS4 the gamer's console. After a couple of years they can add gimmicks and all that casual crap as long as they dont lost focus on the games.

I'm excited for 4k. I won't get to see a 4k screen in person for a few years but I know when I do its going to knock me off of my feet.

Just watched kaz interview. I see the feeling you guys are getting from him as well. I like that ps OS is dear to him. When he said Sony needs to invest on the things they're efficient in, he specifically said video games is very important and core to Sony and wants to wow people with their products...

Now Sony has been proud of ps3's power for quite some time so it makes sense they want to invest further into a powerful console. Also, if MS launches first, with a powerhouse, and forward compatibility then Sony will be forced to surpass the 720 at least in specs cause how else can they compete? Probably not with a wii U gimmick.

It's starting to look doubtful to me that PS4 will make it for 2013.

With MS, we have "E3: It's on" coming straight from the company PR, reports of the final silicon going into production/manufacturing, and recent spec leaks. Xbox3 releasing this year seems like a given.

With Sony we have "it's not about being the first, it's about being the best" "we are satisfied with PS3 growth, 10 year cycle, etc." Either they are really good at keeping everything under wraps, or they won't be making it in 2013. I'm beginning to think it's the latter.

Gamers are STARVING for new hardware at this point. Being first to the market will be huge. If Sony delays to 2014 I think they are screwed.

Sony also is starving for you to buy The Last of Us, God of War Ascension and Beyond before they announce the PS4.

All of that makes sense. In addition, we had a tons of PS Vita Leaks. Heck, Sony's entire E3 conference typically gets leaked.

All we know is that it is getting developed. Well, it kinda has to be, right?
Maybe we'll know more after the Playstation meeting.

I swear, they need to have BC otherwise ONLY PS3 owners can have those new games when they have a new console (assuming) shortly after that.

Yep, they still have a few 1st Party exclusives before E3 and honestly some part of me would love if they'd manage to keep details from leaking leading up to E3 and surprise the shit out of me.
Edit: Which won't happen but it would be glorious!

The alternate interpretation is that they need these 3 big titles to get them through 2013 because they won't have new hardware ready.

Last I heard, Beyond is releasing near the holidays.

The more i research about TSV the more i'm inclined to believe that the company that actually manages to get their system built on a mature version of this process is the company that will benefit the most in the medium to long term.

If these new consoles launch without utilizing this technology they're going to be obsolete much faster than previous generations since, without a doubt, companies who produce and update their electronics technology on yearly cycles eg. cellphone producers, will eventually benefit massively from the increases in efficiency and power that proper 3D stacking provides.

We could potentially see phones that graphically out perform home consoles in less than 4 years. Should developers then start porting larger budget games to them, even at tiny profit margins, it will/could still be economically viable purely due to the massive and ever increasing install bases provided by phablets. We could literally see home consoles disappearing before the end of their planned life cycles.

I can't freaking wait for E3. There's definitely gonna be a lot of annoucements cause they have quite a few first party developers working on unannounced games.

How difficult would it be at this point (or maybe some weeks before) to switch back again from Jaguar to Steamroller? AMDs Lisa Su yesterday showed that Steamroller/Kaveri is on track for a Q4 2013 launch. Wouldn't that fit with a late 2013 / early 2014 PS4 launch? Especially because the HSA support in Kaveri is a bit more fleshed out...

i feel like ms is again running away with hype while sony is still focused on ps3
MS just has more rumors and the six month long countdown clock. As long as the PS4 isn't underpowered they'll get a lot of hype back when games are shown. At least one team from every single one of their first parties have been mostly quiet for a couple years, meaning they'll likely have a ton to show for PS4 throughout it's first year. That is what Sony needs to capitalize on to succeed next gen. A powerful console that can deliver some amazing, exclusive experiences. Given how many of their studios have added second teams, I think they're doing just that. Two teams will also allow them to continue old, recognizeable series and add new IPs.

My opinion is that these are controlled leaks. There is far too much of them lately. Sony should allow some controlled leaks to counter current hype created around Durango.

Perhaps we'll have more luck this month after new revision of Orbis devkit ships to developers.

I sincerely doubt that Sony could mass produce PS4 in time if they started customizing Steamroller from the scratch at this point. Jaguar centric design is probably finished by now (at least on "paper") and to start all over with Steamroller would delay PS4 to at least summer 2014. And since we all know summer isn't really a popular time to be launching anything, PS4 would end up being delayed until fall 2014. giving X720 a year head start again.

That's the point. They haven't said anything yet they're getting all the headlines and column inches.

I believe it's natural for the western company to dominate the leaks in the west.

i also believe theres likely a general perception among developers that ms is in the pole position next gen. imo they are probably a good deal more timely than sony is on next gen development stuff, leading devs to begin to accept durango as the de facto next gen console with ps4 more of a question mark.
