Video game cliche #65: bubbles

First of all I want to express my gratitude to everyone who took part of the butt-stomp appreciation thread. You guys rock!

Now I have another task. Bubbles in video games. Are they good? Are they bad? What games features characters using bubbles?

So far I have Bubble Bobble, Pang, Oops Up and Midway's arcade sink 'em up, Bubbles.

Any others? GAF help is needed for great video game justice.

In Yoshi's Island, when baby Mario seperates from Yoshi he's all cryin' in a bubble!

There's that one game...uh...Cool Spot? Where you jump on bubbles a lot!

BUBBLES SUCK

I fucking HATE bubbles.

But if people name off games, I can give you more screens/videos.

My precious Gazunta. <3

Norfair in Metroid had large sections of rooms made up of bubbles, as well as platforms.

Level 3 in Wizards and Warriors was lava floors that had bubbles come up for you to stand on to reach different parts of the level.

In FF1, the mermaids will all turn into bubbles if you don't save them!

Level 2 or 3 in Gradius 3 was a bubble level, most enemies were either in bubbles or were bubbles..and the boss was a big bubble.

Parodius games had lots of badguys surrounded by bubbles.

In all or many Ecco the Dolphin games you have to seek bubbles to survive.

Also don't forget the bubbles of water on the Hanging Waters stages in Ecco Defender of the the Future.

I must whore that game out as much as possible.

Depends on how you use said bubbles, care to elaborate?
Not really. :)

Gazunta, bubbles suck. I'm not even gonna bother getting screens/videos, because they suck so much.
Fair enough. I still love you for trying!

Not to mention that in at least one, possibly more, of the Game Gear Sonic games, Sonic could get trapped in certain large bubbles for floating sequences.

Kirby had similar bubble "hazards" in Canvas Curse (and possibly other games), although in Canvas Curse, you could just tap them on the touch screen to pop them, or let them run into something.

bastard

Best bubble usage in a game ever is in Cave Story, btw.

It's a gun that fires out bubbles that float near you (can do damage in this mode) and when you let them float for a couple of seconds or let go of the fire button, they turn into fast as fuck projectiles.

I expected a monkey thread...

Bubbles in video games are..well, I's can't say I can recall many games with bubbles in them. Pang had a bubble or two. Eco had a bubble. The bubble had lots of bubbles.
Bubbles are good because they allow you to float up to higher platforms.

Gazunta, if you guys make the next Ty game like that Asterix game.. the one we'll never see in the states... I'll give you a candy bar at e3 next year.

Any kind you want.

(Seriously though, I'm starting to get this vague notion that you are collecting gaming cliches to use in game focused on cliches, somewhat like that Asterix "In Game Town" game. I've always wanted to make something like that.)

someone should make one on Ghost Ships good god if that's not the most cliche thing ever used in RPGs I don't know what is.

anyway to be on topic

a pain in the ass stage I must add

The Smurfs (SNES). There is a level near the end of the game where you have to slalom between thorny plants. Irritating as hell. Can't find pictures of it, sorry.

In Grandia, bubbles were used to indicate when a character or enemy is in a "sleeping" state. Also, the snooze attack had a character firing bubbles to put the enemies to sleep. Grandia also had a ghost ship. :lol

:lol see what I said, every fucking medieval rpg has a damn ghost ship if is not a ghost ship is phantom ship

In World of Warcraft you can stay underwater without drowning by snagging the bubbles from air spouts or clams or something. I remember taking advantage of them offshore of Stranglethorn Vale.

I can't find an image, but Donkey Kong Jungle Beat has DK getting trapped in a bubble which you have to maneuver around.

I'm fairly certain that Micro Machines on NES had a bathtub track where bubbles would slow you down.

It's a reach, but Super Monkey Ball has monkeys in little plastic bubbles. :D
