video game worlds you like hanging out in?

what video game worlds do you like chilling in? games you can pick up, not get shit done, but still have a good time just doing whatever. whether that be due the world feeling very lived in to the game having some cozy towns.

playing the Fable games again and they'd land pretty high on my list due to the combination of sim elements (home ownership, jobs, lots of sex) and humor. other titles that come to mind:
  • Stardew Valley
  • Skyrim/Oblivion/Morrowind
  • Ni No Kuni
  • Witcher 3
what games make your list?

Elder Scrolls mostly. Morrowind and Skyrim in particular, though I also dig Daggerfall. Oblivion probably the least, but still up there. Another would be Ultima Online, or Dereth of Asheron's Call. Fairly short list for me in terms of "just hanging out".

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
One of these days I need to pick up the OG Xbox version of that. The PC is the only version I've ever played.

Unfortunately the only way to play it would be the OG Xbox itself.

On One or Series X, if you insert the OG disc, it downloads the Xbox 360 port, which was based on the Android version instead :(

I like to hang around No Man's Sky in the low stress creative mode. Building and exploring. Minecraft sometimes, too. I like to meander around the worlds in Fallout 4, GTA V and Starfield. Oh, and the OG 360 Crackdown in Keys to the City mode. I enjoy that one, too.

What time is it?

That whole trilogy was amazing and the exploration was bolstered by radio stations that later entries in the series don't even come close to. In that trilogies timeframe you also had Morrowind and Shadow of the Colossus which fit nicely into this discussion. The only modern game that comes close to sense of wonder I found in those worlds is Breath of the Wild (I did every shrine in that game and explored every corner before getting Revali's Gale which might have ruined the experience).

The Elder Scroll games
Majora's Mask
Ocarina of Time
Minish Cap
FFIX - Linblum especially
Fallout New Vegas in the Strip
The Spaceship in System Shock 2
World of Warcraft

AC2, Skyrim, Vice City, GTA4, RDR1, ME Trilogy, Metroid Prime, Deus Ex HR.

There are others these are just the ones off the top of my head, but playing these games after a long time away feels like coming home.

Lately for me it's been Infinity Nikki. Incredibly cosy game, it just feels comforting being in this world.

Dark Souls 1, Zelda TotK, Vice City, San Andreas, Xenoblade Chronicles 1, Fallout 3, Skyrim, KCD 1/2, Forza Horizon 2, RDR 1. For some reason the restrictive mission design and controlling a wonky sack of potatoes in RDR 2 ruined my experience with the world as a whole so I never returned despite how pretty it was.

no other game comes close to RDR2 in terms of how much time I spent in the campaign making zero progress to the story, just fucking around the forest

I like sometimes just walking around in Horizon Forbidden West. Just enjoying the scenery.

Same goes for the forest in Monster Hunter Wilds.

And if I paid for my sub, I enjoy Gridania in FFXIV as well.

Probably will be the same for ES Oblivion, if they really release a proper remake.

Basically, woods.

Recently spent a lot of time in Fallout 4.

Doing side quests, collecting legendary weapons, upgrading them fully before using them, dismantle them once out of their ammo.

But had to hurry it at some point due to onslaught of games starting KCD2.

BOTW is also a good shout, though, am at beginning. Completed all towers and it was enjoyable. Starting with shrines, lets see how that goes.

The island that the witness is set on. Many times I have booted it up just to walk around and enjoy the scenery while listening to the nature sounds, it has a weird desolate feel and yet feels cozy at the same time. Genuinely wish that place was real.

Botany manor is the same has that same bright and welcoming feel plus the game puts seats all over the place to sit and just take in the sights. The gardens are beautiful as is the manor itself.

Superliminal is another it’s surreal and feels like you are walking through some odd art gallery/museum exhibit. I have spent ages hanging around in the game not doing anything except listening to the soundtrack while enjoying the ambience.

The island that natsumon is set in, I love rural Japanese settings and that island has it all. Lush forests, coastal areas and waterfalls. A quaint old style Japanese town full of neat countryside homes, the sound of nature all around. One of my goto games where I don’t play the game itself but play inside it just walking around swimming and jumping off stuff Have a literal album of screenshots on my switch of basically holiday pics from the game. Could probably add in all the places the boku no natsuyasumi games are set in as all capture a really cozy snapshot of a nostalgic side of old japan.
