Viral marketers, wanna come clean?

Well, anonymously, anyway. I'm working on a story about folks hired by game companies to shill their products surreptitiously on gaming message boards. You know, create hype, bash the competition, lie--all that fun stuff. I know a lot of you have seen these phony posts (and if you still have active links to any, please send 'em my way), but if you've ever been hired to create them, I'd like to talk to you. I won't give attribution in the story if you don't want it. Please email me at crispin_boyer@ziffdavis.com.

Funny aside: I've already talked to a couple of these guys, and they say they avoid posting on GAF because you're too hard to fool.

Thanks!
Crispin

I need money where can I get a job like that? I'm willing to pimp PSP? I'm willing to travel and sell 360s in Tokyo.

Oh please post a link to this story here sounds interesting :)

That's because we catch them, gut them, and cook them.

Nah, in general, GAF shoots down anyone who's even slightly positive about a game.

GAF is far, far too difficult to try to advertise the sheer awesomeness of the Microsoft Xbox 360®. Because of its cutting edge, next generation graphics, comfortable, wireless controllers, and exciting Xbox Live capabilities, anyone trying to give lip service to the Microsoft Xbox 360® would come off as a marketer. Everyone knows that the incredible power of the Xbox 360 doesn't need any spin; its coolness speaks for itself.

Goddammit ALLARD! I've told you a thousand times that GAF doesn't like your bald, formulaic, jacket over a hoody, fake snowboardin street cred emo music lovin' ass.

Hop in your Ferrari, drive to a street corner, and fuck yourself /jaffe

"Mr. Jones, you're fired!"

"Thank you."

I'm a viral marketer for Arrested Development, Nintendo and Tool (among others).

Wait, if "they" don't pay you and don't even know you exist, you're not a viral marketer, you're a fanboy right?
Well, wrong thread then, I guess.

Paging Izzy. . .

Man I haven't seen that guy in a while. He redefined obvious. Probably taking a well timed break after all that PSP propaganda.

edit: Sony must give two weeks vacation

You missed a registered trademark. You're fired. Them's the breaks kid.

What you did is the equivalent of turning on the light in the kitchen and watching the roaches scurry out of site. You're not gonna catch em by saying "come clean fellas you know you wanna". No they don't.

How do you know his email isn't being flooded with confession stories? :)

+1 vote to have this thread archived whether or not Crispin gets his source. Stuff like this should be time-capsuled for the ages!!

If you could see that I see in my inbox. Russian sluts are involved. Sadly, however, a mole has yet to step forward.

I think the fact viral marketers don't even bother with GAF is a true testament to our amazingness.

Go us.

One former viral marketer's exact words: "They won’t touch GAF. Those guys are crazy. They’ll trace your IP. They’re the most jaded and hardcore to pull over.”

Not surprising.

Definitely let us know where the story appears, EGM, 1UP, or otherwise.

In addition to tracing, we have no problem exposing you all to slashdot and other avenues. Enjoy, PR suckers!

Incredibly true and we're not ashamed of it.

Good call. When we're through with you, no one will have the guts to say anything positive about a videogame again!

Haha, weaksauce viral marketers

Crispin Boyer's video game journalism not only surpasses my expectations, it surpasses the Gold standard that Shoe has set. Crispin is an asset to the internet and print journalism. Believe whatever he writes!

Received any word from heian-kyo, speevy or SSX yet? I kid guys I kid, don't be hating.
or am I?

Besides, the really really really hardcore people are on boards dedicated to specific genres or ancient pltforms, like fighting game, shump and neo geo boards.

:lol

Is this thread for real? Would Crispy really give out his company email on a public forum like this?

It isn't as though there aren't plenty of other writers who have made no secret of who they are and for whom they work on this forum before.
