I have zero motivation, severe depression, fits of anger, low self esteem, bipolarity.. the list goes on. I'm hoping for some anti-depressents.. do these work? If they do, it'd mean so much to me, even if it is 'fake happy'.

i was on Depakote for seizures when i was younger. It made me more aware, but also generally more happy. It felt fake, but as my mom said, it may have been because i was used to the way i was before the drugs. i ended up weaning myself off of it. Now i take St. John's Wort off and on. i have a "general feeling of well-being", as described on the bottle, but it doesn't feel fake like i remember feeling on the Depakote.

YMMV.

They can work.. as long as you get on the right type of medication. If you get on the wrong type of medication, it can screw you up more. (Being bipolar and on only anti-depressants when I was younger either did nothing or messed me up more.) Sometimes they have some bad side effects, but if you feel it's something you need to try, I'd say go for it.

There are a bunch of antidepressants out there, and if a psychiatrist puts you on one, it may well help. But it's not a panacea, and they do come with side effects. Sometimes, you'll have to try a variety of drugs and doses to find the right one.

Good luck.

You need to find out if you have a severe chemical imbalance. Have you had a brain scan or anything like that? If not you should ask for one if you can afford it. If they do find an imbalance then some meds can really help, but it does vary greatly from person to person.

If they dont find a significant imbalance then I would strongly recommend staying away from anti-depressents. A good friend of mine is on like 5 different meds right now (she was originally just on one and they kept adding more), and IMO they have only made her condition way worse than it was before.

I tried an antidepressant once a few years back, honestly it made me just numb emotionally, which was worse than all the negative emotions I was dealing with. I know they do help some people, but if you're honest with yourself, you can probably trace at least some of it to specific things in your life now or in your past...try to deal with the root instead of dealing with the symptoms. It's not an easy thing to do, but it will offer a more permanent solution than simply taking medicine.

Taking medications can help if you're severe but in my case I didn't like any of the ones I was prescribed years ago (paxil, prozac, wellbutrin, etc.) all of them made me feel numb. I didn't feel happy or sad just nothing :P. I sometimes will go to a therapist or a support group since that seems to help more than meds.

Well, they're not something to be taken lightly, obviously. From your description though it seems like your problem's pretty serious. I don't think you should expect the drugs to do all the work for you, though. You should also try exercising more, eating better, etc, if and when you can, along with talk therapy. As for the meds, you have to be patient with them. They might not work right away, and usually the first week or two before they start to take effect are rough, because not only are you depressed, but you also have to deal with the side effects of the drugs. But if you can make it past that, you should start to see an improvement.

Either way, good luck. :)

They may give you antidepressants to lift you out of your pit so to speak. From my studies, the reason for this is that psychoanalytic methods tend to be more successful if some of the fog is lifted first.

Well you mentioned bipolar so I should point out that if you feel you are, make sure that you mention it to the psy as bipolar and pure antidepressants can lead to severe mania. Should he/she determine that you are bipolar, try out Lamictal as it has few side effects and works well for many people. Above all else, if your meds leave you feeling emotionally numb, then they are the wrong meds for you; too many people feel the “numbness” is something they just need to accept when that is the farthest thing from the truth unless they have exhausted every med out there.

I work at a pharmacy, and stuff like this is over prescribed. No offense to you, or anyone else, but people need to be able to get their lives on track without a prescription drug.

Yeah, that's important. :) And Lamictal? I'll have to try that out when I go back on meds.. Hadn't heard of it. And yeah, I've been on alot of medication in my life and I'd have to say, some meds made me feel numb and if they did, I'd try different ones. All meds work differently. Just gotta find what's right for you.
