Vita "hacked," (PSP) homebrew on the way (not piracy)

I will happily do this just to bypass the PSTV whitelist and then never take the PSTV online again. Well worth it as most of the games I would want to play on the PSTV don't work strictly because of their list.

Playing Little King Story on my TV, praise jayzuss.

What this really shows is just WTF is Sony doing having a whitelist like they have. They're actually going out of there way to make it impossible to play games on the PSTV.

I don't get it either. They should just allow everything. It certainly encourages people to hack their system. If I could play every Vita game on mine without doing it I'd never even consider messing around with this exploit.

But the PSTV is just a Vita? The game is the same.

Who knows, publishers may see vita TV as a separate device all together just to milk more money. Might be similar to music publishing where you require a separate license for different formats, digital download, mechanical, synchronization, streaming, etc.

I think it has absolutely zero to do with any kind of licensing and everything to do with Sony requiring devs to test and make the game work completely without touch screen stuff. Most publishers just dont give a crap about having that work for a platform that has like 1/100 of the userbase of the original Vita I guess

True. It still doesn't explain Sony's laziness though, with EU titles not working and USA titles working (of the same game). Can't really blame it on the devs if all that stops a title working is a line of text in one file (people bugging devs for "patches").

But it has a touch screen emulator built in.

I know it does, but Sony still requires publishers to have a control scheme that can be fully used without that I'd think. I can't remember any "official" games that work on VitaTV where touch functionality/gyro is mandatory for progress.

How will we access the mail app when Sony updates the firmware? Don't the online services always require the newest fw?

Online services (PSN) always requires the newest firmware to be installed, although when the PS3 was hacked there was limited success in "spoofing" the firmware to make PSN think you were running the latest.

In all likelihood the Vita will get a firmware update that removes the email app, and people will be presented with the choice of having an online-capable handheld or one that's able to run arbitrary code.

So switching PSN accounts, which in my opinion is the best feature of this new package, won't actually work when an update rolls out?

It really just depends on what Sony does. In some cases like this, the system gets patched so that the code can't be executed again, but the existing hack (that, in this case, would allow for multiple accounts) will persist on your system and continue to work, assuming that it takes advantage of yet another security hole that Sony fails to patch.

We really don't have enough data yet (or even know how this PSN account switching works) to speculate.

Do you mean I could buy the Chaos Rings games, available in English on the HK PSN Store, and play them with my US PSN Account?
As far as I know, yes. Demos downloaded, backed up, then copied over with your main account will play on your main account. I don't see why it wouldn't work for full games, but I could be wrong.

Not sure email is part of the PSN services at all. At least from what I read, this exploit should be usable in any previous update (which means it doesn't rely on being updated to work), and I also remember using the email client when there a update to download but I used the client just fine before updating (although in my case could be a non-mandatory update, so it's hardly confirmation)

Replacing the hacked files will be simple in a FW update. Such as the whitelist file.

I just meant that if Sony releases an update (3.53?) that either removes the email app or fixes the security hole, you won't be able to access PSN until your console has been updated - thus removing your ability to perform this hack again once you've updated.

Indeed it would be super easy for them to undo in a FW update. We're just going to have to see to what extent Sony cares enough to patch all this.

Aren't certain apps like Netflix blocked on PSTV too? Wonder if whitelisting those make those work too.

People in the other thread reported that they indeed work, but Netflix is a bit shitty because it relies on touch only, and the touch emulator doesn't work very well with it.

Is all this excitement just for playing blocked vita games on vitatv?
Because I'd like to play the PSP AC!D games on my vita, but I don't think this helps me...does it?

Being able to play my copy of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Megaman Powered Up and the AC!D games will make this amazing.

Is there any reason to stay on a lower firmware on the PS TV? Or, is this hack/exploit the best thing going for it?

Amazing that this is happening the day before my vita to replace my PSPGo shows up.
And here I thought I was going to miss my GBA and SNES games!

Someone mentioned being able to play the digital Asian versions of Chaos Rings series on a US account.

But reading about what this can do, I don't see how that'd be possible. How can it play if my Asian account is recognized as the owner of those titles?

It will still detect the owner account is installed on the vita?

Just speculation on my part.

I'm assuming it has a console license, therefore using CMA after switthcing your account to your main should let you copy it back over. It works with demos as far as I'm aware.

This works with PSP isos/csos but will it work with my patched PSX version of Suikoden 2?

That's one of the main reasons why I'm interested in this
