Vita PSN Game & Service Thread 2

Yeah Big Sky is not great. Framerate issues and it just looks a mess at times. Not what you want when you're trying to be precise in a shmup.

Can't complain too much, it was free.

Surge on the other hand is great. Awesome little PSM game.

Despite its issues, I'm having fun with Big Sky Infinity (Maybe because it was $10 for me?). Not sure what to think about Surge right now. I'm just drawing lines over colorful blocks to make them disappear without any strategy whatsoever. Am I missing something?

Doggy & Piggy want you to buy DJMAX Technika Tune or the alien from Metal Slug will abduct you!

I'm getting back into Gravity Rush. Even though I still can't control it worth a damn the core gameplay and missions are pretty solid and I enjoy hunting for those crystals during the free roam parts.

The sliding shit can go to hell though. I pretty much skip that if I can and just slowly float my way through any sliding part.

Yeah the sliding was the only time I felt annoyed at the game. It took a bit of getting used, and once I figured out how to drift it wasn't hard. But it's where I felt there was forced Vita functionality.

They could have made it hold L+R and use analog to steer or something

Make sure press down on d pad to rest camera

and sliding isn't that hard....(remove one finger to drift)

It's my extreme hatred of any kind of motion controls in play here. I'm struggling to keep her where I want her to be with the tilting and they want me to put my fingers in a somewhat uncomfortable place to activate the sliding.

As I'm struggling and falling off ledges 10 seconds into the race or sliding I just keep thinking "why am I doing this on a system with 2 analog sticks? The whole point of having it was to avoid doing things like this".

Yeah so, Jet Set Radio and Persona 4 have suddenly made my Vita the most popular device in the house.

After a few months without love the Vita has stolen me back from Blops 2 on the 360 and NSMBU on the Wii U.

And I'll be picking up Zero Escape for the holidays, so the Vita seems to be where it's at for me.

Is there a demo of it?

Yes.
And it's unlikely to be a plus game any time soon, IMO.
Easily worth $10, even with the occasional occurrence of slowdown in later stages.

Can't compare it to Big Sky Infinity, as Sony still hasn't fixed my issue.

To those trying SoTN in EU, are you in the same region/store as the guy who's saying it works? Those photos show German vs. English flags maybe? Could that be the difference?

But ZHP isn't on sale!!!! :(

Patience, padewan.

Well the strategy is in tieing as many blocks as you can together for the biggest scores, surely?

So you're trying to think about - which blocks do I want to start off with? Should I connect to this bomb block just yet? Should I try and connect these 10 blocks together or just quickly get rid of a few of them so that I can get something even better? Which blocks are at the edges? Which vents can I unlock quickly?

All this against a mounting doom, makes for a pretty stressful but really exciting little block-destroyer. I'm really quite surprised by how much I'm enjoying it. For the price, amazing.

Its not even close. Sine Mora is a very finely tuned and well crafted shmup experience with tons of extra challenges. Big Sky just falls flat right from the start with the randomly generated levels. I like randomly generated content if done right, but its seems a bit "cheap" here. It feels like a flash game. A very, very pretty one, but still not much more. The typical flash game mechanic to improve your ship after each flight isnt helping either. It also has annoying sudden deaths that you sometimes cant see coming and explains its mechanics rather poorly.

To be fair, Sine Mora isnt quite the poster child of easily understandable tutorials either.

Patience, padewan.

Patience isnt doing us any good right now. I contacted the PS blog team and they said we should contact NISA support about it.

The deals END next week, and currently there are no new deals up. They simply missed putting them online.

I wrote them a support ticket, but maybe someone else should do so as well?

Edit: Btw, thanks for writing that blurb about Surge.

Eh, fair enough. That's kinda shitty.

I'm still on the fence about ZHP... but if it doesn't go on sale, I certainly won't buy it.
I know how much you want it though, so I hope it gets fixed.

Worst case, you can get it for +$5 thought GameStop, I think.

Sine Mora is fine when it comes to tutorial. Here's some powerups, here's a button to slow time if you've got meter, here's a button for special attack if you have stock to use them.

Done. :)

I'll post impressions on Big Sky if my issue get fixed anytime soon... no email from Sony support yet, I'll probably call them when I get home from work...

Also thinking of stopping by BestBuy and trying to PM Sony Smash. Sub $20 for a new copy? That was my price point. (I think they price match +10% of the difference or something.)

Thanks, dallow!

Any tekken games on Vita?

Tekken 6 PSP for $40.

I LOVE Sine Mora, so thats not supposed to be a huge negative, but in terms of the tutorial:

- The game does a poor job of teaching you the different variations of powerups. I couldnt remember a single powerup after the tutorial.
- The time/health mechanic is poorly explained
- They never explained when the point multiplier resets (I am still not sure when that happens. It can reset even when you are not being hit by something.)

I get that, but I couldn't muster any excitement from it. I know what would make it a lot better for me though: Make the play sessions shorter, the pressure should get faster earlier. On my first try I went until level 23 and only lost because I was getting bored.

If you try to maximize your score each round until level 23, you'll get closer to losing. The risk/reward dynamic is pretty interesting. Pretty much if you notice that you have lots of time each round, try to go for longer combos and keep the star blocks as long as possible or see whether you can open a vent before getting a max combo of a color.

Anyone else annoyed that more of these HD collections don't come to Vita? As much as I will appreciate playing Hitman Collection on my 360, i'd love it on Vita. Sly Collection/Ratchet & Clank, Tomb Raider (though 2 of the 3 games there are on PSP...), God of War (1 & 2) im sure there are more out there. Seems like a missed opportunity.

Although I don't know how well the MGS collection sold as a comparison...

Sly collection makes perfect sense seeing as Sly 4 is getting a release on Vita. Make it happen people!

and Nyx goes down.

Didn't bother grinding in the end. Realised I had tons of stat and spell cards I had never used. Pumped them all in to Raphael and made him awesome. Switched and item. Slowly beat nyx over about an hour but I finally did it. Ending was good to.

I'd like to see PSP compilation with maybe some graphical fixes, I don't know how feasible that is. And I don't know how'd they sell considering that you can buy a lot of the games on PSN. Though things like trophy support would be a plus for people like me.

What don't you like about it? Just curious, as I'm enjoying it so far, even though I'm terrible at it haha. Don't usually play shmups though.

I don't like how everything is randomly generated. It feels like I will never be able to actually get much better at levels because there are no levels. There's no real design to the levels since they're just randomly generated. I also get confused by who's shooting who or where I am since it's twin stick AND sidescrolling. There's also too many loading screens, a narrator who talks way too much, and the odd framerate drop.

Are you tilting in the correct axis? The idea is to use the Vita as a steering wheel, which IMO works better than analog sticks ever did.

Did you like Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved or it's sequel?

It takes a bunch of practice to get good at the sliding... what really helps though is letting off one of your thumbs so you drift and using that to play with turning until you get good at it.
In essence, normal "steering" is meant for slight changes in path as you are going mostly straight and you *need* to use the drift controls to turn corners.

It takes practice and exposure... I used to think it was poorly designed, but now my main gripe with the game happens to be the format they used for challenges. There's no quick restart. Fuck up when going for gold? Great... die if you can, or finish the race anyway... and if you don't? Quit out of the mission to the main world so you can reenter the mission. This was beyond aggravating to me during my attempts on that fucking Spy DLC health race through the second rift plane.

In addition to what vanWinkle said, Geometry Wars was also waaaay better finetuned. It actually felt like you are good when accomplishing a good score. Big Sky feels too much like a grindathon.

I would love Geometry Wars on the Vita, would look fantastic too. I know the latest one was published by Microsoft and I remember reading on wikipedia about the company splitting I THINK but not sure - think it can happen? Would be a great addition..

Alright, tried it in one plug where I verified I had power and nothing. I do know that sometimes I had to reseat the Vita into the cradle to get it to charge, but I thought maybe that was because the cradle had a defect. Anyway, when I get home, I can try another charging cable to be sure and I guess if that doesn't work, I will see what my option is for repair. I've only had experience with Nintendo's repairs and it's been pretty painless. How is Sony on this front? I'm bummed because I am super meticulous with my stuff and this Vita sits in its FEB case when I am traveling with it. Hopefully they will repair it for free since it is not even a year old yet.

Not sure about Sony's repairs but before you do make sure the USB connector was facing the right way when plugged into the transformer - sometimes people managed to get it to fit the wrong way around (happened once to me as well). Otherwise, I hope it is the cable...shouldn't be too hard to get a new one hopefully.

@SAFCDan go for it at that price...but the difficulty sort of jumps from easy to crazy imo [super monkey ball]

@The Grim Heaper grats on the 32! Someone else had trouble getting into the recovery menu so if you still can't try this:

Did you try Power + R + Start when shut down?

Truth. I spent like an hour and a half the other night trying to get the 30 tricks. 50? Fuck that shit!

I eventually got it after a few hundred attempts. I could probably run that course in my sleep now.

It was a pain to do the tricks..but after you pull it off you realise how awesome the game can be imo (true potential) - as Derrick01 said though, less of a tutorial and more of a challenge at times. I had the same issues as the other guy with the not bumping into anything - just need to go round in a circular lap once or twice.

Btw (what Zaraki_Kenpachi said) when you want to jump from one rail to another that is close to you but not in front, jump first then move. If it is a big jump far away, turn in the direction then press the jump button...should help.

Even 32GB is starting to feel small to me thanks to PS+. Wonder if they'll release a 64GB for anything less than, say, $199...

Yeah...but it's still less painful with it.. Vita has an expensive upkeep.

Grats, InfiniteNine, still planning on picking that up eventually..

Late edit ----got 8-bit sound pack for free (on vita - sound shapes dlc) by downloading curved terrain pack (free) on ps3 :S
