Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | April 2013 | Sacrifice your Independent Soul

Do you think Nintendo goes around asking their studios which platforms they'd like to make games on? I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but it's amazing how Sony ignored what worked and what didn't on PSP. The best selling games on that platform were original Grand Theft Auto, Monster Hunter, Gran Turimo, Final Fantasy, God of War, and Metal Gear Solid releases. None of those franchises have a new entry announced for Vita more than a year after launch. Amazing.

That was exactly my point because I think it is certain Nintendo tells its teams what platform to work on, while Sony merely suggests. Like I said blessing and a curse. Sony gets more out of its teams in terms of original titles and such, but the placement of those titles may not make the most sense in the grand scheme of things.

didn't sony force gravity rush into a vita title rather than a ps3 title? or, was the change in platform mid-development a decision made by the developers? i have no doubt that sony is more relaxed with control in comparison to nintendo, but i feel like a lot of the posts that talk about sony's weak stance are basing it on things like naughty dog's console-only position, which might be what sony wants just as much as naughty dog. is it really confirmed that sony doesn't make decisions like that?

I think it was the developers, I'm not sure I really remember.

The only hints we have it is that Sony gas talked about how a lot of the people that headed up the PlayStation brand came from the Music side of Sony and they brought a very open approach to game development where they wanted to enable teams and give them freedom to make the games they want.

@Sol1dus is that the mother of dragons?

How is Terraria on consoles anyway. I got it on PC years ago (played like 12 hours then stopped) but can't imagine playing without mouse..with you playing it on PS3 do you think it will work better or worse on Vita?

I've been trying So hard not to get it on PS3 so I can wait until Vita. How is it?

It's very, very intuitive. At first I was raging because I was like "HOW THE F#$@ IS THIS POSSIBLE WITHOUT A MOUSE?!" but then I clicked in the right stick in my blind rage and triggered the secondary crosshair mode, which makes the right stick function like a mouse. Game was perfect after that.

I haven't been seeing the new content yet, although it's been ages since I've played it on PC. It's an absolute blast, yet again.

Also RPG Maker posted a really mean April Fool's Day post on their FB:

Believe it or not, your RPGMaker Games are now playable in the PS Vita! Two members of our community have been testing it with their game. Stay tuned for the news about the converter. http://rpgmaker.net/games/4567/blog/9477/

So mean ;(

I believe Yoshida was one of those. He was a producer on Crash Bandicoot.

And, while that's a noble goal of them, it doesn't work out well when none of your development teams want to work on the Vita. You have to force your hand a little in that case, and it doesn't seem like they do or even care to do.

It takes some getting used to, but it works pretty decently.

Digging is a lot easier since if you down the button, it'll automatically dig enough for you to be able to dig and keep moving forward/down or whatevs.

Placing stuff is more awkward. You can enter 'cursor mode' (so it works like a mouse pointer), which is fine for building but not so much if you're in a hurry.

It could definitely work on Vita. Hopefully the added touch stuff doesn't suck.

Remember when Yoshida said Sony learned from the PSP about supporting Vita with software? What a lie ...

Yup. Didn't really happen whatsoever. I wouldn't be surprised if soul sacrifice, tearaway and Killzone are the ONLY big SCE games we get this year.

that sale on Virtua tennis 4 is temporary irrc and will leave tomorrow right?

Thinking about getting it, really getting into some sports games on the vita. Played HSG alot just got MLB and this would be the third. Come on EA make the next hockey game for vita ! Even in the past on psp, gameboy i played baseball alot, sports games are just great for handheld and particularly vita since its so fast and easy to pick up and play in an instant. Doubt i could find it for $15 physically anyway even if i wait. Plus i recently been switching between games and switching cards is annoying, normally i dont care because i play a game and only take it out when i move to a new one but when you go back and forth its annoying.

Does anyone else think they are probably going to butcher sales for Killzone mercenary if Killzone: Shadow fall gets released like 1 or 2 months after? I mean I was pumped when they played the trailer but than realized if it's a launch title, the ps vita version is gonna crash and burn.

If you guys haven't played NFS: Most Wanted by the way... awesome, awesome open world racing game. It's easily one of my most favorite games, considering I'm an enormous fan of Burnout Paradise. I think it'll be my next platinum, going after the trophies is really fun and enjoyable, btw. I really can't praise this game on Vita enough.

On the contrary, the game would benefit from some heavy marketing of the Killzone brand.

But wouldn't you want to play on the next gen version with the multiplayer community? I can't see the online living for too long. I honestly hope I am wrong though.

I was actually planning on picking a copy up for the vita when origin had that sale but they sold out =\.

While I think more could be done, and it is hard to say for certain right now what the rest of the year holds for the platform, I also think we are insatiable as gamers. If look at it in the first year and a half the vita will had a healthy amount of games on the platform. From big 1st party games like Uncharted and Killzone to Original IPs from Sony in Gravity Rush, Tearaway, and Soul Sacrifice to some big 3rd party titles like AC3:L and if you look out east Toukiden, geb2, Mind Zero, Ys, etc to a great amount of indie developers jumping on board as well. Also can't forget about all of the cross platform games like Sly, PSASBR, Guacamelee, Sound Shapes and more. That is nothing scoff at IMO. But again we are all a bit insatiable and want more more more, myself included. All of us especially want us to see the vita sell more as a result.

I want to go back to my earlier statement that I would love for Sony to do some Game Jam sessions to see what their studios could come up with in just a 2 week period. I think not only would a lot of great ideas be born out of that but also a lot of great vita games.

Good game. But dat pop-in. I stopped after beating all the most wanted.

I disagree. Which Killzone fan going to buy a Vita for Mercenaries when they could instead save their extra pennies for shinier PS4 version a few weeks later?

Like AC3:L, the game should've been scheduled for release in June or July, not in the crowded autumn stampede. It's never a good idea to compete with yourself when one of the two offerings is so obviously going to be overshadowed.

But wouldn't you want to play on the next gen version with the multiplayer community? I can't see the online living for too long. I honestly hope I am wrong though.

No. Killzone: Shadow Fall doesn't look appealing to me at all. I don't want the "next gen" version. I want the one that looks like a Killzone game and that doesn't cost me $600+ to play online.

Right here, chief!

With GTA V releasing the same day and another Killzone releasing at launch on PS4, they have to push the release of Killzone Merc forward if it's at all possible. :/

This is exactly what I am talking about. I never thought about AC3:L as an example but it is a good one.

There definitely will be people who think the same way but most Killzone fans will likely be going to the next-gen version rather than the vita one. Especially if the console and games are priced correctly.

I totally forgot about GTA V...poor Killzone =\.

I'll be getting both new Killzones but I'd honestly play the Vita version more due to the score attach nature.

We'll see.

I don't think Killzone fans who own both a PS4 and a Vita come this Fall (likely a $700+ investment in total) will have much trouble springing $35 for a Vita game if they actually care about the franchise and playing it in a portable form.

Then there's the group of people that want a good FPS on a portable and might not really care about Killzone on consoles at all, but if they hear about Killzone on Vita they'll be interested. And if Sony is actually competent people will hear about Killzone this holiday season.

Of course that market is not that large but you could say that about any middle-tier production of a AAA franchise.

I know that's a popular thing today, but IMHO Vita gamers deserve better games than can be made in 2 weeks. Heck, all gamers do. Does rushed development do anyone a favor? Certainly not the consumer.

Sony has already held a game jam for PS Mobile. The results were pretty awful. Given that Sony made just about the worst Minis ever released in the whole program, I don't think their own game jam would be much better.

If Gran Turismo 6 is announced for PS3 this year ... I just can't. It's a really stupid decision. Even announcing a PS4 entry would be bad for Vita.
Maybe in your eyes, not in mine. 24 hr enduros wouldn't fit naturally in a handheld. My Fanatec and G27 wouldn't fit into that equation either. Just my opinion.

Motorstorm, need 4 speed etc are perfect handheld fodder though.

Fair enough, I suppose the FPS genre on the vita as a huge whole that needs to be filled, especially after the atrocious COD and Resistance games on the system.

Gran Turismo PSP sold nearly 4 million units worldwide. The other two franchises you mentioned didn't come close to that with their PSP iterations.

I probably won't be able to afford to get a bunch of games at PS4 launch so I will probably buy Killzone Mercenaries for Vita and then Driveclub, Knack, or Infamous Second Son for PS4.

The problem is that there's no synergy between the two games. People who buy these games spend dozens of hours in multiplayer. Those same people do not want to invest in two separate multiplayer ecosystems. So the smart thing to do is spread the two games' releases out so that the community is focused on the Vita one, gets bored, and snaps up the shiny new one later on. Capcom would never release a portable and console Monster Hunter at the same time in Japan, for instance. And even if they did, it wouldn't be as suicidal as what Sony's doing because any such MH games would be identical to each other, distinguished only by whether you prefer to play at home or outside.

Don't cap Mercenaries at the knees by pitting it against a Killzone with much better multiplayer, a likely better single-player, and years of "next-gen" hype behind it. And once the E3 hype kicks in (we'll likely get new trailers for both Killzone games then), it's basically over for poor Mercenaries. They should've done a Killzone Liberation sequel or a Resistance Retribution-esque game to at least differentiate it gameplay-wise.

Well rushing and releasing an unfinished game is not a good idea too (the results are always bad see COD Vita, Burning Skies, Unit 13,Uncharted 3)so yeah both ways are bad for poor KZ:M.

God, I would sacrifice my yet-to-be-grown apple tree if they announced a GT for the vita.

Are you reading this SCE and polyphony Digital!? I WILL GIVE UP MY APPLE TREE FOR YOUR GAME.

I liked it but the online kicked my ass. And I feel like its too small a screen for how fast you're going. I always crash into the corner of things.

They might want your tree, but SCE software boss don't really care about Vita and in the end it's his call to greenlit it or not sadly.

Well than Ill hoard all the apples, no one at SCE will be able to enjoy a home made Apple Pie ever again! Muahahahahaha...than they will have no choice but to green light the game!

I think that's true, but I also think that Gravity Rush just could never have been a PS3 retail title. It's not worth $60.

It was presumably going to be a downloadable title, and got moved to the Vita so they could charge $40 for it. Wouldn't surprise me if Tearaway was the same thing.

I still don't agree with this "GTAV will kill Killzone Mercenary" bullshit.

We'll see.

Yeah, I like score attack sometimes. If it's implemented well, this is another bonus. While I love the general Killzone online , if this game manages to nail that but has a score attack type nature for the single player? Possibly the best Killzone ever.

Granted nice figures. I'm sure GT6 would hit that on PS3 and PS4 though. PS4 would offer the download play function via vita as a portable option.

I respect your opinion and others who want a GT6 on Vita and it may happen. PS4 has announced drive club so the door is open for a Vita GT 6. I don't personally think a full fledged GT6 is vita worthy, maybe prologue or a cut down version. The Full 6 title deserves a console release IMHO.
Plus with the issues from GT5 that I feel held the series back the PS3 deserves a full fledged non compromised GT game.

That is my opinion and maybe a selfish one.
I wholeheartedly agree a full on GT title would boost Vita sales a lot, so I can see the need for it on vita also.

for me I'm buying GTA5 day 1 and skipping KZM*

GTA5 will last longer for me,then after I beat it and get sick of it it I can buy KZM for $5 on PS+ or something.

*if I don't sell my Vita before that date anyway.

Well it would be 2 weeks to get a concept put into an early prototype by Sony's best studios not just indie bedroom developers making games limited to PSM. Then successful ideas will go on to have that game get a lot more polish. A lot of great games have come out of Double Fine with this method.

I personally know big AAA titles like GTAV will be bought by everyone, so I can just mooch off a friend's copy while I buy my own titles.

I didn't mean GT6 on Vita, I meant Gran Turismo 6 on PS4/PS3 would hurt the selling power of a Gran Turismo on Vita. The game could literally be called "Gran Turismo PSVita" or something equally unimaginative.

GTA5 better have good controls and a good story. GTA4 sucked and I couldn't stand the controls. My roommate and I got into arguments because if a game has bad controls, no matter how good everything is, I usually never finish them.

Also I'm probably not getting a PS4 for a while. The PS3 has enough games to keep me occupied and if the Vita has taught me anything is that I shouldn't buy consoles during launch.

Top Bottom
