Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | October 2013 | Ver 2000, Batman and some Angry Birds

okay friends - im nixing psp games since they are still 15-20 dollars each.

i think im going to pick up some ps1 rpgs. ( 1 for 10 or 2 for 12 )

would love some opinions on these games or any other suggestions in that price range:

Legend of Mana
Vagrant Story
Suikoden
Breath of Fire 3
Breath of Fire 4
Chrono Cross
Grandia
Saga Frontier 2

My recommendations would be Suikoden, Chrono Cross and Grandia. Breath of Fire 3 is supposed to be good - but I haven't tried it myself. 4 didn't really grab me. Saga Frontier 2 may be good, but haven't played it in ages - just bought a physical copy the other day, since it's not on PSN!

Suikoden - grand scale RPG, very fast-paced, recruitment-heavy. Iffy translation but the game itself still holds up really well. It's only actually about 20 hours long on a first playthrough. My favorite classic on PSN.

Chrono Cross - Fantastic music, good battle system, very atmospheric but the plot drags quite a bit and is confusing even when you find out what's going on. It's a bit long and IMO it overstays its welcome because my favorite part of the game is really about halfway through (
Dead Sea / Chronopolis
).

Grandia - Classic-styled JRPG with a great battle system, very good adventure-y feel. Characters can get a little grating at times (spotty VA) but overall atmosphere is good.

Vagrant Story is a must play for RPG fans.
Breath of Fire 3 is solid.
Breath of Fire IV is extremely divisive. It uses a lot of mechanics that make it somewhat of a JRPG rogue like.
Chrono Cross is a fan favorite. I hate it.
Grandia is heartwarming and charming, but wholly derivative. Still loved it back in the day.
Saga Frontier is straight asscrack. Do not play this game. Do not buy this game. Do not acknowledge this game.

I couldn't get into Vagrant Story.
I liked the SNES BoF games but haven't played the PSX ones. I could swear only 1 of those was available on NA PSN.
I have no idea on Grandia.

And you are 124309218310% correct on Saga Frontier.
I bought it with my EBGames discount because it was Square.
I played it for 10 minutes maybe before I took it to work with me the next day and promptly traded it in.

Y'know it's true. :P

And your platforms are actually pretty much mine, minus the WiiU. I might grab one cheap sometime to play Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101, but that's about it. I can't justify a purchase there at this point for 2 games.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if there's a Platinum Games Wii U Bundle with those two games at some point. I guess you're not much of a fan of Nintendo's IPs. My family loves Nintendo, so we usually pick up their consoles at launch. I paid around $150 for a Wii U and I believe 4 games. It's definitely Nintendo's worst managed system, but I can't complain since I split the bill on it lol. It's looking to be a Nintendo Box with occasional third party exclusives. Fun to play with family and friends so I'm happy.

3DS did a good job with the Wii U droughts lol. Vita is the best companion for the 3DS with its vastly different library. Plus I can bring one of the two to Campus with me. JRPGs love the portable systems so I'm set no matter which platform they choose.

PC will cover everything else. Waiting for the 800 series from Nvidia to build me a rig.

Also, considering

Where is my Heart

why not Final Fantasy IX, the greatest psx jrpg of them all?

I made a thread on PS forums about that soul sacrifice patch and I just saw this.

Hi everyone,

We wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that we are aware of potential system issues during the "Preparing to download" state on the PS Vita Store. Our teams are actively working to address this issue. We will return to this thread when there is more information to share on this topic.

Thanks for your patience, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I'm sick of most Nintendo IPs at this point in my life... they're always mostly the same game with a few new twists to me. So my 3DS is my "I love Nintendo" nostalgia machine. Playing NSMB2, SM3DL, LM2, DKCR3D, etc. makes me not have any desire to play NSMBWiiU, SM3DW, the new DKC, etc.

A new Zelda or Metroid would be the exception, but I never even bothered with Skyward Sword on the Wii either. So it depends.

Platinum games on the other hand? I love just about everything I've played by them that's interested me, so I'd love to play more... I just can't justify a trainwreck of a system for 2 games. (The account management, online, lack of achievement/trophy system, etc. all bother me a lot so I know my WiiU would mostly collect dust if I bought one. The only saving grace is that it has the gamepad play, so it's like playing a Vita... so if I can put a game in standby, pick it up and play for 20 minutes on the couch in between things, and then put it back in standby? That's a huge selling point. I'd definitely buy a WiiU over a Xbone. Over a PS4 depends on a lot of things, but the PS4 is not in the equation until a price drop/redesign most likely.)

So after Tearaway what are the other vita games to look forward too

Major retail titles? Or just in general?

Ys Celceta, Minecraft, Rogue Legacy, Borderlands 2...

If it really ends up at $25 or less... I might have to suffer the main character and actually buy this. :S

major retail, exclusives mainly

I think you're screwed then.
You bought the wrong system. :P

Check this older thread for customization shots:

That's the closest to acceptable because it covers the envelope head entirely just about.

This one is also tolerable:

I hate the face on Iota and I dislike how disproportionate his head to body ration is. It's just NOT aesthetically pleasing. It throws out all the laws of symmetry.

Looking amazing. I'm getting serious great-platformer vibes from this. Day one.

thats debatable, for me they are all great and IX is pretty up there

and thanks heckmanimation for that link

Well, then you might be a bit disappointed.

On the other hand though, if you got your Vita also to play great games in portable form, you have plenty to look forward to.

I'm thinking Tearaway could be the thing that sets the precedent when it comes to AA games. My absolute favorite PSP games were LocoRoco and Patapon, and every iteration of those went for $20. It's not like they have a lot of cost to make back, there's only 4 people working on it right? And heck, if that's all it takes, we needs more Vita games.

nah pretty happy, just would like to know what exclusives games i'd have to look forward, and lets be honest, there are a couple

I get what you mean but if you know his head is an envelope containing a letter for you...how can you not forgive it? It's a paper world, everything is very light :)

hahaha

very Corrosive

edit: dang it! i was going to choose that blue squiggly one!!!!

A pretty great one, think it is supposed to be this guy:

Can't wait.

There are definitely a few. What I meant is that you might be disappointed if you were looking for the number of exclusives that consoles tend to get.

Well, I just discovered I can not use the Download Manager if my PC is not connected to internet, another kind of DRM I suppose and that sucks since I can not access my Vita games stored in my PC :/

There is something called Open CMA which gets round that:

http://wololo.net/downloads/index.php/download/1252

Not sure if it still works but it says fw 2.00+, I keep an eye on it as I'll want it down the line for future storage purposes or something.

Just chiming in, if you like survival horror, GET LONE SURVIVOR.

Just got my platinum, and it was amazing. Great throwback to the golden era of Silent Hill.

(1) Toto better be right about Gurumin. I just impulse bought it to round out my promo purchases to go over the $50 limit.
(2) Gurumin was purchased at about 12:03am EST. This Spend $50 get $10 better go til 12am PST.

When is the T2 pinball table supposed to hit for Vita Pinball Arcade? Every patch I look hoping it's in there but so far nothing yet

I have $10 to burn and I'm flipping between Thomas Was Alone and Stealth Bastard. Even though I want to play SB more (and hate playing it on the phone) and I already (almost) beat TWA on PC, the part where it says "Commentary for every level by creator Mike Bithell", has grabbed my attention. What is that?

And if you have any better ideas, where do I throw this $10...

Anyone got JP Toukiden? It's only about 1500 yen in the shop near me. Assuming the cart works with non JP PSN accounts, unless it has an online pass / must have DLC?

so yeah...2 hours of playing Batman Blackgate.

I really can't recommend it to anyone.

Holy too many issues, Batman

:(

I regret buying it. I don't even dislike it. I think it's a pretty good game. It's just not even remotely worth $40.

Incredible.

...If Totobeni and VanWinkle is agreeing on something... then it is exactly the kind of thing that can really convince me about whether the game is worth the price or not.

You folks should agree with each other more often, hahahaha.

Toto, why u no listen to my advice?
I warned you about the Batman. :(

In other news, Persona 4 opened up after school and now I have no idea what to do or where to go.

I was gonna buy a bunch PS1 games for the Spend $50 & Get $10 back but there still seems to be few PS1 titles still missing like Tomba 2 and Legend of Dragoon on PS Vita. Man, come on Sony.

Instead, I went and bought P4G, Tactics Orge: Let Us Cling Together, Wild Arms 2, and having bought The Walking Dead Vita last week, bringing the total to $55.

Played it before?
Did you use a guide?
How many playthroughs?
That seems *really* quick. :)

Never played it before. Took around 4-5 hours for first playthrough, then I used a guide to mop up the rest and get the endings and all that. It's an incredibly short game once you know your way around, but it's still incredible.

If you're really longing for the dumpster fire that is Legend of Dragoon, you can get it. You just need to shell out for a PS3 and the digital version of the game. ;)

(But yes, they should get ALL PSX games on the store for Vita, period.)
