Always nice to be around when new volatile islands are being formed. This one shall be named... New Australia! Let's start sending prisoners there right now!

A tsunami alert issued after a major 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the Tonga islands region on Friday has been cancelled, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

The Hawaii-based centre had earlier issued a tsunami warning for Tonga and neighbouring islands, and reported that sea level readings had confirmed that a potentially destructive tsunami wave was generated by the quake.

The quake, which hit at 6.17am local time on Friday, was centred 210km south-southeast of the Tongan capital Nuku'Alofa and 480km east-southeast of Ndoi Island, Fiji.

It struck at a depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey said.

Police in Nuku'alofa, said there were no immediate reports of injury or damage.

Lucy Folay a receptionist at Royal Sunset Island Resort on Tonga's Atata Island told brisbanetimes.com.au the shake was short-lived, but “very very scary” nonetheless.

“It lasted a few minutes and then it was gone,” Ms Folay said.

“But we were scared when it first started. Luckily nothing was damaged; nothing broke or fell over; no cracks in the ground or the walls; no roof damage…nothing at all really.

“We’re all OK at the moment.”

The earthquake struck after an undersea volcano erupted earlier this week near the low-lying twin volcanic islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha'apai, shooting spectacular plumes of smoke, steam and ash nto the air.

There's been lots of volcanic and seismic activity over the past year or so, something's up with the Pacific plate

A volcano reduced northern hemisphere temperature by 0.2c? Answer to climate change confirmed, let's start blowing those things up!

Yea I was looking at it thinking.. am I the only one seeing a giant fist?? Lol. Kinda wierd that the water was so calm around it. I figured there would be crazy amounts of waves.
