• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

VR GAF, give me a quick update.

Yeah, I was so disappointed when I tried my first free movement game and got nausea immediately. I haven't really pushed through to try to develop VR legs in a serious way though, the few times I tried I noticed no improvements. Maybe I should give up and start to use teleportation.

I had tons of fun with games in which you don't move in-game though, so I'm not complaining.
Yea, I still get a bit motion sick and I like to think I've developed my VR lega, I've been with VR since the release of the PSVR1, PSVR2 and now Quest 3.
I've decided that I have to always enable snap turn. spinning around using the controller that motion sick starts to creep in.
I don't like to teleport, I can move forwards and backwards standing in place but I have to physically turn my head and or body around to keep the motion sick away.

It will be for its price range

It will be a few years before you can find a wireless headset that's better in that price range, plus your getting stand alone capable for portability, good for flat gaming away from home

It's not even definitively better than Quest 3 was it?

Yes it has

eye tracking
a better gpu/cpu
Dedicated Wireless dongle
An unconfirmed higher fov
And weighs less

Basically everything is better except pass through camera but that can be upgraded apparently for people that care about that, screen is the same

Oh ok - guess the drawbacks mainly are no OLED vs PSVR2, and no HDR vs PSVR2, and lower resolution vs AVP.

Whether it's a generational leap from Quest 3/PSVR2 remains to be seen - but curious. I think the tech in it will get surpassed/outdated in a few years, but we'll see.

The psvr2 OLED really isn't even that great it's a regular OLED screen not micro OLED which is why they have to use frenzel lenses instead of the much better pancake lenses, it also can have a lot of motion blur in dark scenes because of that too, I rather have a good lcd with pancake lenses than a regular OLED with frenzel lenses

Micro oled are much more expensive than the oled psvr uses, that's why micro oled headsets cost 1,500 - 3,000 like the Vision Pro and galaxy

It's also not wireless

Can confirm. Once I tried playing Elite Dangerous in VR, I knew there was no going back for me. The ability to track enemy ships by looking around during a dogfight is incredible. The spatial awareness VR provides is invaluable.
Wish I had the setup for playing ED in VR.

Don't know about all of you but outside of the VR software I'm planning to use the frame a lot for flat gaming instead of the deck for travel, and maybe sometimes in my own house just to play games in other areas where my pc isn't

I love how some comments here are just "bu-but VR is dead" and then suggest buying a playstation headset. Lol.

VR is in a great spot, tons of games on Steam and elsewhere. It's not mainstream, aside from some really barebones games.

The Quest 3 is basically plug and play with any game (either stand alone or through Steam), cheap, has great overall image quality and is wireless.

Great place to start VR.

And Half Life is worth the price of everything all alone.

Frame will be better choice in 2 months

I was hopeful while following the rumors over the past couple of years, but the lack of color pass through was a kick in the pants. Half of my Quest 3 usage comes from playing flat games on a floating screen in a passthrough environment. I can't go back to B&W.

Edit: yeah a color passthrough is possible as an additional accessory. The Frame also has an expansion slot that was never utilized to any meaningful capacity. I don't think the volume will be there for 3rd party vendors to invest heavily into the market. VR is too niche.

It's weird that it doesn't have color passthrough. How much money per camera is being saved?
It's surprising that black and white cameras even exist. I'm sure they must be needed somewhere for some scientific reason.
But I've decided that augmented reality using camera's to show the real world is not much fun for VR.
Lego Bridge Builder was about the only one I think was any good. And even that can be played in full VR using a VR world instead of my boring living room.

I put the quest 3 on my face, start it up, Stand there in blackness while it boots up, oh look the Meta logo, then camera lets me find and grab the controllers, then launch a VR game. Never need to see through the camera again.

But seriously, why are those camera's black and white on the Frame?

Quest 3 or wait for Frame... probably wait unless they announce a further delay on it.

Don't underestimate the joy of on-device VR (without PC connected), if you're into older games at all. So many classics have vr ports than can run entirely in the headset, and it's amazing to have them one click away on the device itself without any PC involvement... Tomb Raider, Doom / Quake / Quake 2 / Arena, Doom 3, Duke 3D, Half Life, Prey, Jedit Knight, Minecraft... all in perfect VR inside the headset one click away. The list goes on and on, and keeps getting larger. Definitely worth it to pick a headset that has built-in capabilities for all these kinds of things even if your PC is powerful.

Built-in GPU on the headset also means you can use spacewarp to up your effective framerate if you eventually encounter a PC game that is very demanding, or if you just want to try bumping up the visuals to max... it's not perfectly seamless but it effectively doubles framerate via motion-aware interpolation and I've decided to use it on some games with very nice effect.

The main reason I'd wait to see about the Frame is probably due to my biggest Quest 3 complaint: bad controllers. I had stick drift on the original Quest 2, and then I had it all over again already on Quest 3, and it's pretty infuriating. Steam's controllers look like a huge upgrade. But if you want something today, you still can't go wrong with Quest3, it's a solid, matured device that works great with PC streaming.

Bradly said he knows for certain color pass through camera is coming very soon around launch

Yeah, I can see my points being a non issue for people who prefer immersive experiences. I own roughly 175 paid games on the Meta Store and never really touch them (I've received nearly 2 grand in referral credits). I end up spending 75% of my time in MR playing my PC/Xbox games and watching youtube while doing mundane household chores.

They made it optional so they could sell it cheaper because not everyone cares about color pass through

The color pass through camera is coming soon around launch though according to Bradly

Yes, instead the people that want color now have the useless, unremovable(?) black and white camera.

Is this one of the add on's that the expansion port will use or will it be the actual cameras will be color?
I'll be getting the color camera's if it's an option, but not as an add on.

Actually that brings up a point, if the color cameras are a separate add-on where would they go? You can't block the black and white ones if that's the case. Where would you place the color ones so they're still aligned with your view?
Guess we will find out when they show it, sure it will clip on some way

What your getting for it will be the best value, it's going to have eye tracking and a better SoC for maybe just 100-200 more
Wrong! The steam frame is rumoured to be around the price of the old vr headset from valve. That would make it $500 more expensive new to new.

Secondly, if you're unsure about vr, you can go used on the meta quest 3 making the pricing gap even wider. You can find used quest 3s on market place from $300.

Finally what matters most in vr right now isn't hardware specs, its the ecosystem and the games. This is doubly true as the frame will not offer a materially different experience to the quest 3.

The steam frame will provide with access to a subset of the games available on the quest 3. You'll have worse support, a worse ecosystem, etc. Why people are glazing valve is beyond me. They barely release any vr games to start with or contribute in any meaningful way to the longevity of vr.

They said it will be less than the index and insiders are guessing 600-700 for base storage model

You will have better support you mean, and you will be able to play most of your steam library on the go, can't do that on quest, it's going to replace my Steam deck and also be a vr headset
