Do any of the GAFfers in Japan have the Sony Airboard? The location-free TV thing?

I'm curious how effective it is over the internet, and could buy one to watch TV from Japan in the UK, but first I'd need a good upload speed, and secondly it'd have to work properly.

That thing is being sold here too (US/Canada). I've seen it in the store and got some demonstration of it, but can't tell you how goot it is in the real life use. It seemed to work very decently, even when he switched it to internet stream, but for all I know it could have been an ideal case scenario with the server in the next room.

the biggest problem I see with it is that most upstreams are ridiculously capped. MPEG4 needs IMHO at least 500Kbps to look even reasonably good... most upstreams are capped well below that.

thats the thing, I have no idea about internet in Japan. If they have 500k-1mb upstream, and this thing is good, I'd get it installed in a spare room in my in-laws house, and have Japanese TV in the UK!

Cheaper than £400 for a satellite installation and £30 a month for NHK news (the only other UK available option)

And even i am moderately surprised
I remember seeing the airboard, but i always assumed it was just an in-house solution, that ran off some sort of wireless base station.

The whole thing was that it was supposed to be portable around the house.

I'll try and find out some more.

if its the same as location-free, you can take the screen anywhere with a wifi or wired ethernet connection and tap into the tuner over the internet.

Does the Nihonternet have better upload speeds than 256kb?

yeah, my connection is 10Mbps up, and it's a shitty connection.

I dread to think what the tepco fiber optic speeds are...

ah, here we are :

VSDL : 40 Mbps up
Fiber : 100 Mbps up
