Warhammer 40k Space Marine -- 3rd Person Melee Shooter

I saw this over at PA.

The blog site where the video is posted is getting hammered right now but if you refresh the stream should work.

As I commented earlier "Gears of Wareavenly Sword" Basically the game looks like a Heavenly Sword melee/combo style game crossed with Gears style executions and art style.

I'll be keeping my eyes on this one.

So there was some rumours recently that THQ is working on a melee heavy action game set in the Warhammer 40k universe. Turns out they were correct, and the game is called "Warhammer 40k: Space Marine" a 3rd person action game where you play a, wait for it, Space Marine.

And here's the developer walkthrough that came out of nowhere.

Looks interesting for something so early. Keeping my eye on this one.

Use this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrqJHqIN4a0 the original video has been removed from that blog

That running cinemaction scene looked really bad. Other than that, if they polish up the animation and such it looks like it'll be a decent game.

Intimate brutality... isn't that a Gears catchphrase (or something like that)?

edit: The dev narrating the walkthrough is a bit annoying, too many buzzwords for me to care about what he has to say. Game definitely looks early though.

I think the phrase you're thinking of is "destroyed beauty", which did get a little irritating.
Looks early, but it's a step in a direction I thought 40K should have taken a long time ago. I think a Gears-style 3PS game with melee combat thrown in as a well-developed secondary system would have been better. Still, I'll be watching this one. They really seem to have grasped the 40K universe well.

Yeah, its still too early in development to make a proper judgment. Even still, it looks promising, the W40k universe has a lot of potential.

Ah, that's the one. I have heard Cliff talk a lot about the intimacy of the violence in Gears, though, but in a significantly less campy way than how the dev used it in his narration for this game.

So basically, what I'm saying is that I have no idea what to think of this game because it seems way too early (the grenade exploded into a solid yellow flash, heh)

edit: Just to clarify, before people come running in "zomg chainsaw gears ripoff", isn't the chainsaw-type deal another one of those "it was in warhammer first" type deals (a la a lot of Warcraft stuff) ?

Ok it's really early and the combat still lokks abit clunky so I will focus on the positive:

+ They seem to get the 40k universe. The previz video of killing the Chaos Marine was pretty cool. The Marine is so much bigger than those puny cultists. That's all cool.

+ It was a small video but the lighting looked pretty good and the graphics overall don't look too shabby either. Is this UE3?

+ The cinematic kills looked pretty cool lets just hope they will get the variety they are promising or it gets old really fast.

- I agree that the small bolter is a bit too machinegun-ish.

Do we know who is developing this? I really like the idea...

Yeah, the chainsword & bolt pistol combo has been in WH40K since before I stopped playing years ago. Having said that, Warhammer is hardly innocent of ripping off dozens of other sources :D

It looks incredible, but the animations lack conviction and those camera cuts need to go.

Definitely on my radar.

I think there was a fairly good Space Hulk mod for Dawn of War. For now, it's the only thing we have.

Space hulk just seems like a no-brainer. I'll have to get dawn of war I suppose.

40k has been doing chainswords since the 80s.

Abslom Daak, Dalek Killer had one in 1979 (complete with pistol and ludicrous shoulder pads).

Game, set and match I believe.

It wasn't even a terribly original idea then, but it's about 20 years late to start criticizing GW about it now.

Um. That it's a blatant rip-off?

Well, it's a little late to call it a rip-off now, since its been like this since ages ago.

In fact, it would be strange to not have one. Most Space Marine sergeants are armed with one.

Personally, I Would have preferred a more straight forward fps & I'd rather be fighting against Orks (or as an Ork against Imperial forces). Ho hum, maybe next time.

Hope the jump pack is used & isn't just decorative.

I know. I was just getting in a blow against pre-emptive 'but 40k had it first' defences.

Meh. Give me a power fist or give me death.

First Strike rule accepted.

Hey, why not ask for a Thunder Hammer then. But everyone must start somewhere. :lol

Can't see the video, but... yay!

From the reactions it's as gory and violent as it needs to be. Looking forward to the game.

It will automatically be better than Fire Warrior, because it features the motherfucking Space Marines, instead of the stupid fucking Tau.

"We call this... orchestrating your ballet of death"

Really? REALLY? :lol :lol :lol

Anyway, it's an early build, but the combat looks really awkward. Why no lock-on? No one runs around like an idiot turning their back to their opponents in mid-combat. Also I don't like the stun poses. It looks stupid, and Space Marines are not stupid but Most Awesome :(

Graphics are great though. Makes me wonder why no one has had a good go at making a third or first person action game in the 40K universe (no, FW doesn't count). I mean, you have this awesome visual design with something like 20 years of history to it, with the amount and quality of art to prove it, millions of pages of lore and insipration, a hardcore fanbase that probably overlaps quite well with the gaming crowd, etc. Isn't this a really obvious game to make?

edit: forgot about Space Hulk, but that's really old as well.

There's enough strategy for me in the tabletop game... if I want to do 40K and think, I'll just bust out my minis. It's about time there's a mindless 40K game (Firewarrior excluded. Sigh)!

I did like DoW though. Just sayin'... this idea is cool.

Also: video is down.

the only 40k game that is guaranteed to own face in the future is dawn of war 2
warhammer games other then relic's seem to be average for the most part (warhammer online not included)
