Was Banjo-Tooie good?

I know the reviews were really good back when it first came out. But what about now? Is this still a good play through? Is it a must have title?
The reason I'm asking is I see the game around (as well as the first Banjo) and it has kept it's value really well at game shops. Tonight I ran into a copy at a Blockbuster and they are selling it for $9.99 Can. which is about a third of what most places have it for around here.

So if you've played it, please let me know if I should go pick it up tomorrow.

Note: I like all genres of games. I have a huge backlog of games but always have time to play something I have missed.

It's Banjo-Kazooie, plus a little more. I guess?

If you like Rare's "collect-a-thons" then by all means have a go. I wouldn't exactly call it a "must-have", but I like to collect some of the more major N64 games out there, since most of the stuff was...junk.

Very, very fun game. I absoultely loved all the different creatures and things you could transform into, especially the dinosaur. The level design was extremely cool, and I love how they improved on the original's moves so well. Definitely one of my favorite N64 games, and much more enjoyable than Mario 64. :P

I loved the original Banjo, but couldn't stand Tooie. It was just too much. Jak and Daxter felt like a good evolution of the original Banjo.

I loved how Banjo Tooie went straight on from where BK left off. You start with all BK moves, even all the mole hills are still there. It broke the mould from the "Oh, I've lost all my weapons in this adventure, better start over!".

The amount of collecting is the same in both banjo games, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There are more things to collect, but less of those things need to be collected, if that makes any sense. So the overall number of things collected at the end is about the same as Banjo 1.

I really enjoyed BK, but BT felt like BK put through the DK64 formula. Sure there were more things to do, but they weren't as fun as the first game. The charm was gone.

The original charm was gone, levels were too large, DK64-like and holy fuck the framerate was shit.

But it's still a decent platformer.

I thought Tooie was shit, while Kazooie remains one of my favorite games of all time.

Tooie is too big for its own good. There are seriously like 50 moves in all, and the stages are stupidly huge. It gets to be hard to keep up with everything, and all this does affect the engine's performance. I think there are a lot of cool parts to it, though. I like it much better than DK64.

Tooie was bleh. Kazooie is still better.

Mario 64 >> Kazooie > Conker > Tooie >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Glover >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DK64

Absolutely, the jiggies involving the mechanics of splitting Banjo and Kazooie were amazingly well executed, no to mention the way the different worlds were connected led to incredibly clever and creative puzzles. The only bad thing about it was the framerate, just because it pushed the N64 to its very limits. It's the best platformer of all time, IMHO.

That's my stance as well. Bigger levels, more shit to do, more complications, etc, do not necessarily make a better game. It just became too much of a chore. I played through Kazooie at least twice completely but I couldn't be bothered to even beat Tooie.

I remember enjoying Banjo-Tooie a lot, much more than DK64 (which was way, way too easy). It does have framerate problems, but nothing on the order of Perfect Dark, e.g.

Banjo-Tooie has some of Rare's best humor, too (excepting Conker).

The sequel? No way in hell. Anyone say so I would really doubt played first one. It was the total opposite in creative level designs, interesting characters, atmosphere and mechanics. Doom mini games and trying to be hip by killing off cast was equaling gross.

Banjo-Tooie is an excellent platformer I wholly recommend it if you dont mind a bit of exploration.
Its best 64bit platformer you can get.

I havent played Banjo or Tooie. I enjoyed DK64 though

I'd buy a DS if Rare ever release thier N64 games again (with minor upgrades).

holy fuck the framerate was shit.

I never noticed it when I first played it as all the games I played were N64, so I used to it. But seriously, with all the bitching today of games not being a constant 30 fps is nothing to BT. My eyes, the straining! Also, my favorite part of BK, the out of nowhere quiz show, is not nearly as fun in BT. Neither is the final boss fight, which is really disappointing as fighting Gruntilda in BK is still one of the greatest final boss fights ever in platformers. The levels aren't bad, they are pretty crazy big.

I totally agree that Tooie was too DK64-like. There were too many quests that set up other quests. I wouldn't play for a week, then turn it on and have no idea what I was supposed to do. It had Rare's sense of humor, but for me, the collect-a-thon aspect (which marred the first one, too) killed it for me.

Stick with Conker, which streamlined all that.

I don't think Tooie was a collect-a-thon -- certainly nowhere near the extent of DK64. They consolidated the notes so you collected 10 at a time. Collecting jiggies often involved lengthy quests that you had to do in stages throughout the game (like the sick triceratops). The worlds were all interconnected. It was a very well thought-out game, intricately planned and polished.

That said, it did have some framerate issues in some areas, and the vastness of the game world did make things difficult at times. But it's still an exceptional game.
