Washington Post: Jihadist groups hail Trump’s travel ban as a victory

Jihadist groups on Sunday celebrated the Trump administration’s ban on travel from seven Muslim-majority countries, saying the new policy validates their claim that the United States is at war with Islam.

Comments posted to pro-Islamic State social media accounts predicted that President Trump’s executive order would persuade American Muslims to side with the extremists. One posting hailed the U.S. president as “the best caller to Islam,” while others predicted that Trump would soon launch a new war in the Middle East.

“[Islamic State leader Abu Bakr] al-Baghdadi has the right to come out and inform Trump that banning Muslims from entering America is a ‘blessed ban,’” said one posting to a pro-Islamic State channel on Telegram, a social-media platform. The writer compared the executive order to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, which Islamic militant leaders at the time hailed as a “blessed invasion” that ignited anti-Western fervor across the Islamic world.

Several postings suggested that Trump was fulfilling the predictions of Anwar al-Awlaki, the American born al-Qaeda leader and preacher who famously said that the “West would eventually turn against its Muslim citizens.” Awlaki was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011.

“When U.S. President Donald Trump says ‘We don’t want them here’ and bans the Muslim immigrants from Muslim countries, there is one thing that comes to our mind,” said another posting, beneath a banner of al-Awlaki and his quote.

Another posting on the Telegram channel “Abu Magrebi” said Trump’s actions “clearly revealed the truth and harsh reality behind the American government’s hatred toward Muslims.”

Leaders of the Islamic State speak frequently of their intention to drive a wedge between Western governments and their Muslim populations, and have welcomed outside help — intentional or not — in fulfilling that goal. In a 2015 essay in the Islamic State’s English-language magazine Dabiq, the group said that its motivation for launching terrorist attacks in Europe was to provoke an anti-Muslim backlash that would force ambivalent Muslims to enlist with them.

“Jihadists would have to argue to lengths that Obama, Bush, and others held anti-Islam agendas and hated the religion — not just radical terrorists,
” said Rita Katz, founder of the SITE Intelligence Group, a private organization that monitors jihadist websites. “Trump, however, makes that argument a lot easier for them to sell to their followers.”

Yep. This needs far greater attention.

Whether a deliberate false-flag-style Bannonian ploy or not, the ban is at the very least extremely counter-productive in how dangerous it is.

Edit: Washington Post has been completely on point this week. I hope some of you consider subscribing.

This is so obvious. I mean everyone with half a brain could tell you that, but leaders around the world and Trump specially, are just adding fuel to the conflict.

A lot of counter-terrorism experts are telling them that, but people are too caught up doing what feels right.

So if America declares war and Europe say "no" because this is crazy talk it means that Trump can withdraw from the UN leaving Europe to fend off Russia alone while the UK sucks on Donald's teat.

Not surprised at all as Trump played into their hands by creating a cycle.

The ban leads to frustration, frustration leads to resentment towards the US, resentment leads to radicalization as ISIS target people who are isolated by the US both within and outside.

So yeah well done Trump you sure showed them.

I'm not the brightest guy in the world, so maybe I'm missing something. The tile of the article is Jihadist groups hail Trump's travel ban as a victory, but all I'm reading is that this entire article is based on people making social media comments predicting a war.

To me, it's like if the New York times ran the story: President Trump exhibits classic signs of mental illness based off what people on GAF posted.

Don't get me wrong, I think Trump's EO will make terrorists groups rally, but maybe base the story on something a little more substantial?

Edit: This isn't a complaint about the OP, or the thread, rather it's directed at the the Washington Post.

Yes, and a new war in the Middle East will increase the number of refugees trying to get into Europe, which will weaken the EU. A goal shared by Trump, Bannon, Putin...

They want to escalate the war against terror and destabilize the entire world.

Stop them. Now. Please.

ISIS and Putin. Trump's two biggest fans.

Republicans are the real enemy, tbh.

Who didn't see this coming from a mile away? Hillary rightly said terrorists were using Trump in their recruiting videos. She was chastised by the media for sinking low and the pundits clutched their purses. Deplorables laughed and die hard anti-Hillary called her desperate.

Here's Rita Katz from last October

Shabaab gave their pledge to ISIS long time ago.

Even though I think Trump is a fucking crazy idiot, articles like this make me just shake my head. Except, maybe, raising our hands and say "leave us alone and we will leave you alone," anything the US does they will fine a way to use as "recruiting tool," "victory," and etc.

I'm pretty sure this is exactly what trump wants. Him and the other republicans want nothing more than for there to be an attack so they have an excuse to start another war.

It sucks all these so called leaders creating all this hate to further their own ends and the innocent peaceful people just get stuck in the middle.

Republicans have always played right into the terrorists hands, but this is a new level.

Trump and his Nazi fuckboys should be the one going over to fight them. But they will send our sons, our daughters, our friends, our family to die.

Jihadists have used Trump clips in their recruitment vids and there was an article a few months ago about online terrorist chatter hoping for a Trump victory. This ban crap will reinforce to some folks that the U.S. hates Muslims and that they really are in a holy war.

Trump and the GOP want this. Another terror attack will bring noncritical thinking voters to their side.

Ya, I'm fully aware of that, I just wish there they had better sources than what basically amounts to Facebook comments.

FYI, while making the post you quoted above, I googled 'ISIS Facebook' and 'ISIS Twitter' to see if I could get an actual response to Trump's EO. Most people, of course, realize both Facebook and Twitter have banned those. As mentioned above, I'm not the brightest guy, so I'm probably now on some FBI watchlist. See what happens when you stray into the OT section, shinobi?

I did right after the election! One of the better things I've done in the last few months.

I guess that they always need a fresh supply of young people to radicalise so they can use them and throw their lives away for nothing. But enough about the republicans, those terrorists are a pretty rum lot as well!

Btw whatever happened to Hillary emails scandal? Trump and his supporters made a huge deal about it and then when he won. Never spoke of it again.

Because Trump is such a narcissist, I wonder how long it will take for him to start panicking about his legacy. Like waking up in cold sweats thinking, "oh god what if I fuck this up..."

Probably won't happen, because he can always find someone else to blame for failure.

It was only a distraction, and if it weakened Hillary, the better.
Undoubtedly they can spring it up again if they need a new distraction.
