Washington Redskins Change Their Name To The D.C. Redskins

WASHINGTON—Following an outpouring of criticism from across the country, the Washington Redskins announced Wednesday that they are officially changing the team’s name to the D.C. Redskins. “We’ve heard the concerns of many people who have been hurt or offended by the team’s previous name, and I’m happy to say we’ve now rectified the situation once and for all,” said franchise owner Dan Snyder, adding that “Washington Redskins” will be replaced with “D.C. Redskins” on all team logos, uniforms, and apparel. “It was a difficult decision—and one that, frankly, I’m a little embarrassed took me so long to make. So hopefully we can now put this issue to bed and start cheering on our D.C. Redskins.”

As a Maryland native who grew up right outside of DC I’m going to remember the glory days at RFK when we were wrecking teams on the regular. I’ve long ago lost interest in the NFL because it’s just an awful business. And that’s our thing in DC apparently. Take cool names like the bullets, make lame ones like the wizards.

What I love is that not only is the name changing because whites are offended, but the whites get to choose the new name. One that they deem non offensive.

My hometown is the Atlanta Braves. We have the “tomahawk chop” which is a song/chant we do at games. I think they do the same chant in Florida as well at Seminoles games. In the 80s there was a mascot called Chief Knockahoma. Probably other teams as well. Wow there are a lot of sports teams named after NAs.

So this entire name change thing has likely been going for ages with league participation, so the second Washington announces the new name and logo, both the league and owners already decided this probably last year.

This might have been in the cooker for years, but the team/league needed a reason to pull the trigger. However, everything is already set and ready t go anyway.

Chiefs in the same boat. Name changing isn't new. These teams have got flak for it before.

THe braves have never seemed offensive to me, they are trying to get the chop to stop. But the "braves" is such a respectable name, i think any of these teams named after Native Americans should just start having more education around it and pay tribute to it. The blackhawks are doing that in hockey.

Actually, there's been a push for them to change the name for at least 25 years... From what I remember watching the news way back when. Native Americans were behind that push. I remember seeing an episode of Phil Donahue (or was it Oprah?) and some Native Americans were saying why it's offensive to them.

Personally I'm partial to The Washington Flying Weiners but that name would probably offend short people or piss off PETA or end in a sex scandal or some weird combination of all of the above.

Ray Halbritter has been behind it for years. He also got kicked out of his tribe for being a crook. There’s plenty of NAs that had no issue with it at all and that’s why the polls done, I believe 16 years apart showed an overwhelming number of NAs approving of the name. Changing it is just ridiculous.

I mean, I’m biased as a lifelong fan but if it offends NAs then I’m all for changing it. Had the polls come back with a different outcome and Natives disliked the name then absolutely you have to change it but I guess I’m most annoyed that people simply chose to ignore the evidence. I knew this day was coming and it’s really a bummer but at least I won’t have to listen to the name crap anymore.

Imagine if they patch the new name into older copies of Madden LOL. Probably actually planning on that right now, cant have someone buying last years Madden and getting triggered.
