WB Might Delay Dune to Keep it Theatrical Only

Rumors have the solution to that breach being to preserve Dune as a traditional theatrical to preserve its franchise potential and since its October 1 release date falls well after the estimated late spring date when Covid vaccines should achieve herd immunity.

The "franchise potential" refers to the second half of the movie. The Dune coming out next December is just the first half of the story and ends before the two-year time jump where Paul leads the Fremen rebellion. That would've been the second movie, which wouldn't happen if the first movie didn't make enough money in theaters.

You can't really abort the baby now but I kinda wonder if WB would love to go back and make Dune an HBO Max thing instead?

The books are really screaming for another mini-series or full length series adaptation more than anything.

They're making HBO Max series out of the shitty prequel books.

i did not realize this. huh.

makes the whole enterprise even shakier tbh. this is half the first book? so they will need two movies for just the first book? are they planning on doing the original trilogy? will that be 6 movies?

having just recently read the first book for the first time, it didn't seem all that daunting to do as a single movie. certainly not if you make it as long as any of these superhero films. the book's story also has a good pacing and flow, so i'm kind of surprised.

This movie is just the first half. It ends when Jessica takes the Water of Life. They haven't filmed part 2 yet which is why the director was so pissed about it not going to theaters.

I would rather them delay and see it in theaters as well. Dune needs a big screen. We have plenty of miniseries to choose from. These directors also worked their entire careers for the cinematic experience so we need to be sensitive to that, I understand when they complain they did not work so they could make streaming tv. Seems like the studios decided all this without consulting their talent and this is endemic of mismanagement.

Look I’m just not a fan of streaming only future. Or even release day streaming imo there is no cinema without the cinema and it should be a priority. I think that 4k screens are still no substitute for a theater sized projection. Many won’t even use 4k screens as streaming will accommodate anything even phones. It cheapens the experience. I’m with David Lynch on this.

I love Dune but I don't think it'll ever get the adaptation it deserves. I want the whole story(at least frank herberts whole story) It really needs to be a game of thrones budgeted series. One season for each book. Of course, I'm also a silly fuck who thinks Berserk deserves the Game of Thrones treatment as well.

The thing with Dune is: later books get less action-adventure and more politics / philosophy. The first book is definitely the simplest to digest, and splitting the book in two movies makes sense.
For me the major switch occurs in Book 4 - God Emperor of Dune - and Heretics and Chapterhouse (Book 5 and 6) is full on politics. It would be very, very hard to properly bring them to screen.

Considering social distancing, mask awareness etc. the movies today (Wonder Woman 1984) get two releases (Digital HBO and Theater) and so if you can go to a grocery store walking around picking up shit you can go to a theater sit and watch no question, put people to the far left, far right and sit alone by yourself on mount Olympus if your issue is known coughers that's been the case FOREVER with theaters.
