We <3 Katamari is out!

My wife (bless her heart) picked it up for me today. If I can find the game in Caldwell, Idaho, the rest of you should be able to find it anywhere.

Comparing We Love Katamari to its predecessor is much like comparing a full portrait to a quick sketch. The game is less a sequel and is more of a more fully realized version of its former self. A more accurate name might be "Katamari Damacy With A Budget."

The game starts with a basic overview of the plot of the first game, then knocks down (rolls up?) the fourth wall by telling you that the first game became so popular, the King of All Cosmos now has a fan club. So now you're running around fulfilling fan requests. Blah, blah, you know this from reading about any preview for the game.

But the details are what make the game.

The controls are subtly improved on, such that turning is easier and you actually roll over things that you expect to be able to roll over. It's quite subtle, but noticable. Probably the most useful improvement is that when the katamari is blocked, you get a "katamari-cam" view that lets you see through the object that's blocking your path. The shape of the katamari cam differs from one level to the next (i.e. in the snowman level, it's shaped like a snowflake), but it's immensely useful when you get stuck in a cramped space.

The music is as eclectic as ever. One song is a amalgamation of the music from Katamari Damacy done with.. animal noises. Another is the original theme (the track used for "make the moon") hilariously done Bobby McFarren style.

At the end of each stage, both the King and the fan critique your katamari. The king tends to be happy with any ol' Katamari, but the fans give you a much harder time! The king tosses the katamari idly while the discussion happens, then lobs it up into the sky where it becomes a planet. If you fail to meet the goal, first the fan chews you out and then the King gets really upset and fires laser beams at you. If you quit, the King takes your puny katamari and smooshes it into stardust.

You can load data from Katamari Damacy, and the stars & constellations you created will be available in the Cosmos, as will any stardust. Having a star from each stage of the original game (including the 3 eternal stages) is required to get a 100% collection!

There are only a few things about We Love Katamari that I don't like as much as the original:

- The cousins are ridiculously easy to find, at least so far.
- The collection screen only has the item categories, doing away with the size chart and location chart.
- The difficulty takes a while to ramp up; the challenge comes more from how far you can beat the goal, not making the goal itself.

Everything else is a subtle polishing, such as when you run into an object at high speed and it actually gets knocked around a bit. The stages have a ton of variety, compared with the original that only had 3 basic stages with minor variations among them.

So do "We Love Katamari"? Yes. Yes we do. Except for that box art that makes South Park look like fricking Looney Tunes.

I know I love Katamari :) . But I thought the controls are a little worse. I think it's more difficult to turn. It seems like it's slower. Other than that, I love it.

I dunno. I found it was much easier to turn on a dime, and it was less common for an obstacle to stop you cold. I mean, you still stop if you run smack into a wall, but it seems to be more forgiving when it seems you should be able to roll over it. Sometimes you can roll through it (like the bushes in the flower level).

I was the only person at my local GameStop who had pre-ordered one, so they told me. Not sure how many copies they got in.

I like what I've played, but I can't stay away from Burnout Revenge for very long.

Technically I think it's a little more polished than the first. I just played the original for a couple hours, and I was getting stuck and whatnot a LOT, didn't really have that problem with this one. I'd rank it juuuuust under the first game since overall the music isn't as good, and it's shorter. As in, I completely did everything yesterday, the day I bought it except for doing the hardcore 100% on item levels and a few of the big star/shooting star upgrades.

I was able to get my hands on a copy today! There were only a couple left. I checked like five nearby stores, and Gamestop was the only one. Everyone else didn't have it in yet, or the game was sold out.

We <3 Katamari is great. The stages are a lot more fun. Awesome soundtrack. Great graphics. They did an excellent job overall. So much fun.

As a frame of reference, when did you get the game originally?

For me, the sequel has quite a bit more meat on its bones.

I'm finally going to get a chance to play this some this weekend. Hope I like it as much as it's predecessor, but I'm not sure that's possible. The 'first time' charm is already gone.

Uh, like I said the day I bought it I basically finished it. I'll probably go back to get the last couple cousins/presents I missed, but I got most of them first time through. I could always go back and shoot for the 100% completion on the item-type levels and the perfect size ring on the Saturn levels, but that infuriated me trying to do those in the first game, so I'll probably be content just getting the cousins/presents, which shouldn't take me more than a few hours, assuming my girlfriend can be pried off the game at some point.

Oh, and actually there's beating the super high scores both in size and on the time attack levels as well. I did probably more than half of them, but I'll probably go back and do those. Overall it seems that it's shorter than the first, but there's more content, kinda a trade off.

10 comments? This franchise cooled off.
Well, the release has been kinda segmented - there was another (larger) thread a while back dealing with the early copies that shipped to certain retailers, not to mention a few threads earlier this week.

also it seems alot of people (myself included) didn't find the soundtrack as endearing as the one in the first game. Maybe that cools off the interest.

I'm only about 6 levels into the game (taking my time with this one), but so far it's AWESOME. I don't see how anyone could be disappointed with the game (or the soundtrack)
The levels are alot more varied this time around, with more gimmicks thrown in.
The king is hilarious as always, as are the random objects and creatures scattered around the levels. what I love the most about the series is all the funny random stuff going on in the levels, and it definitely doesn't disappoint in that regard.

So if you liked the first one, this is more of the same, only better.

I bought it on Thursday, and started playing it today--I'm through the first, say, seven or eight levels.

The presentation is stellar, but in my opinion Katamari Damacy beats it on almost all other counts (though that definitely doesn't make W <3 K a bad game). Most notable is the unchallenging level design. The puzzle element that defined KD for me (in which levels had to be solved by figuring out the most efficient way to follow paths that led from smaller objects to larger ones) is almost completely gone--now there's just a bunch of stuff strewn around and you pick it up without thinking about it much.

I haven't heard a single thing on the soundtrack that really knocked me out yet, but maybe that'll change.

The soundtrack is not as bad as people made it out to be, yeah some of the tracks are a little.. i'm not sure how to put it. But it has its fair share of gems, the the Animal Remix of Katmari 1 songs is classic :lol

The game has a decidly differnt humor to the story then the first one.

A lot of us 'WACKY JAPPY' fans imported it many months ago and already had our huge blowout thread, for whatever that's worth.

I think the soundtrack is one of the best in recent years, though not as good as the original -- if the original game had never come out, I think people would be going nuts for it. The fact that some of the best songs (Disco Prince, Tsuyogari Damashii, King of King no Uta, etc) don't pop up until later in the game hurts it a bit, too.

I picked mine up a few weeks ago at target. Great game, but the comments about the music are pretty spot on. The music is still good and there are a few good songs but the original's soundtrack is much better.

I agree. I love the soundtrack. And even if it's not as good... WTF does that have to do with the gameplay? I think it is an excellent sequel, with new challenges and ideas.

I don't see the game as being easier or harder than the first one... it's not like Katamari Damacy was ever made to be extremely difficult :p

To be fair, I was blown away by the level in the school, and even though I think W <3 K is far easier than KD, I'm liking the level designs. The decision to make certain large objects transparent to the katamari (so that it doesn't get stuck on them) was a good one, and removes the only complaint I had about the original game's controls.

I beat the game this morning, and yeah it's pretty easy. The only real challenges were the fiery katamari and the 500km-in-18-minutes stages.

I've found a couple neat easter eggs. While the King's head is bouncing around in the loading sequence, you can control the direction of the objects he spits using the analog sticks. Plus, if you fail a stage, you can try to dodge the laser blasts! In the Katamari Memorial (where you access vids/soundtracks) you can also see a composite of the Japanese versions of the original KD movies.

Still lovin' Katamari!

How do you get to the Moon Memorial in the first game? I could never find it!

Getting to the end only took about 3-4 hours, but I've noticed that the game is far from over.

Still have to collect all the cousins, get all the presents. I notice most levels have a time attack that opens up once you've beaten them, which means more "star" ranks to get. The sumo stage also has multiple accomplishment levels, culminating in a Yokozuna planet -- woo!

And I still need to unlock that movie montage that's on the right side of the extras menu...

That's a lot more replay than the first game had :)

Okay, let's compare scores. I only have one I'm really proud of

On the 'clean the kid's room' level, I have a current record of 1:12, which took me ages to get :P

After you've beaten the game, push circle while on the Earth (there should be a legend at the bottom of the screen that says "O = to Moon Memorial").

I just played through and finished the first game over the past week and I started playing the sequel today. Great game. But I agree with the people saying that the soundtrack in the first game is better.

The soundtrack's a little better in the first one, but this one is so much funnier and has such creative level ideas. Roll up a fireball, roll up a snowman, clean up a kid's messy room. Great shit. And the cutscenes of The King as a young man are pretty awesome.

In the soundtrack's defense, the piano version of the Katamari theme on the "press start" screen is fantastic. Very "Peanuts."

gotta admit the soundtrack is growing on me, loving the game the firefly stage was awesome very cool looking.

I think most of the soundtrack is pretty great, actually. There just aren't as many instantly stand out tracks as there were on this first one.

Eh, a couple of the tracks cross the line from quirky into annoying territory. Katamari Rock is one of them, and Parched Savannah (I think? It's the one with the KD medley done with animal sounds) is another.

OTOH, the arranged version of Katamari on the Rocks is HILARIOUS.

Give it time! I couldn't stand it at all the first 4 or 5 times that I heard it either, but it definitely ended up growing on me in a huge way.

So how do you (Can you) unlock Eternal mode? I've done all the levels and rolled up the sun. Only goal I have for myself now is getting the King rolled up (On that note, about how big does the katamari have to be to roll him up, i've gotten it to 3km, not enough, and hit 3.5km when time was up but i couldn't find him once camera started to zoom out.

I did just about everything you can do (shooting stars on all levels, all presents and cousins found, one-fucking-million roses collected) and never unlocked it.. or anything worthwhile for that matter, other than a cool
alternate Dokaka song
from the roses. I don't think Eternal mode is in there, sadly. :(

Ah, that stinks. But then, Eternal mode was kinda pointless since you had to roll up practically everything to even unlock the Eternal mode in Katamari Damacy. IMO it was rather disappointing--they should've made an Eternal level where you start tiny (~1cm) inside the house, then go out into the yard/neighborhood, before eventually going out over the world. That would have been the ultimate Katamari.

The ultimate Katamari would start underwater if you ask me. :D
