We need USB thumb drive standards.

I have a 7 port hub and because of all the various sizes of thumb drivers I'm lucky if I can get 3 or 4 devices in the damn hub. This pisses me the hell off. I think someone should design an tower hub that stacks them vertically.

Is it just me?

Yeah they do but, why should I HAVE to buy 7 extension cords to connect 7 devices if they went to a tower configuration the a user wouldn't have such an issue with space.

Not many people have 7 thumbdrives.

I completely agree. This just seems like common sense.

I had a Soyo Cig@r a few years ago, in which the actual hardware was as perfectly thin as you'd need it to be, but the plastic body could block a USB port above and below it.

Plus the thing wasn't even made well. A little over a year after purchase, the simple solder joints holding the USB plug on finally gave out and it was done. If I'd have known how to solder as well as I do know, I might have repaired it.

Instead of buing a new one, I just started to use my iPod.

This much is true but the could have a

Printer
Ipod/MP3 player
Mouse
Camera
Web cam
Thumb drive
External harddrive

So you need 1 extension cord. Dude it ain't that hard.

heh and then you might start bumping up against the USB ports max power, as long as you're using a hub with it's own power soucre though you'd be good to go.

My Hub has it's own power source but, I can't put that many devices on it even if I tried. I don't have the physical space to do it.

I have two thumb drives, two USB hd, camera, printer, & webcam if the same device was a tower then I wouldn't have a problem but as it is I can't put all the devices on at once.

So where in Fallujah would you suggest that I go to pick one up?

You can pick up a USB extension cord online, an electronics store, or a computer store. Probably the same place where you would buy your USB hub.

Most people that use thumb drives will not have your issue. So for them to change the standard for very few people just won't happen.

You are thinking personal use, I'm thinking business use and I can tell you that more people than you would like to think are running into this issue.

You can thank me later. It wasn't hard to find.

And by the way. You can buy thumbdrives that don't cause the problems you speak of. So it's really on you to plan your set up.

This is true but often time I'm getting thumb drives from others to pull their data off. I'm anal enough to keep buying one standard design but, I know I'm going to get one guy to walk in here wiht a california roll with schmatics on it.

Thanks!

No problem. That was just a quick search in google. You may want to look around. There may be a better one.

I just typed "vertical usb hub 7 port" in google.

While also true, most people aren't climbing behind their computer to plug in a thumb drive. The printer/iPod/mouse webcam/camera don't need to be disconnected that often. They should be plugged into hardwired ports on the back, no need for a hub.

Yes I agree that MOST people don't have to do that. Here however most people do that. We have a lot of thumb and external HDs coming from a lot of people. There is a lot of information sharing around here and sneakerweb is often the most efficent means of transporting data. Until type 1 encryption for wireless becomes a reality then this is how the war is run.

You have an extreme situation, but then again when USB was announced they were touting connecting up to 127 devices. :/ Can your hub daisy chain off another? That might be a better long term solution than an extension cord, given the number of USB devices which are permanent to your hub.
