WEDNESDAYTON: Google Talk

Not open for further replies.
I don't really know any friends that use Gmail... but the interface looks nice and clean.

If my Gmail account is going to start being used for numerous different functions, I think I might want to figure out a user name that I'll be comfortable with keeping for a long time into the future.

Pretty much no features right now - just simple chat.
I do, however, like some of the User Interface features... (e.g. expanding textbox, sticky windows (like winamp), collapsing windows, QUICK response interface (like gmail), etc.)
It's very un-Windows like...

Makes you wonder what Google's inevitable browser will be like..

Definitely worth keeping an eye on...

wow, so i just tried it out with a friend of mine... the voice chat works great, and was seamless thru both our routers, no configging necessary!

and the eyetoy (only 'mic' type device i have) is a pretty good mic, it was picking up my voice from 3 feet away!

Er. So it seems like this thing does not support multiple IM accounts. It only supports the "industry standard" XMPP/Jabber blah-blah. Is that correct? I have tons of people in Trillian on AIM, MSN and ICQ but I don't talk to anyone on Jabber.

So smooth. It really makes it obvious how fucking ugly msn messenger is. And I love the search fcn.

Now if only all the dumbasses I know didn't use hotmail.

No linux version? :(

Still I can use GAIM but I would prefer to have the native application
Just use a jabber client like Kopete.

I know Jabber supports bridging between IM systems, but whether or not google will implement this on their own servers is another thing.

By the way, I LOVE the search fcn on google desktop 2, and how you can launch applications with it. Wasnt this shown off as a feature of windows vista? Finally, theres is absolutely no need for shortcuts with a system like this. Gone are the days when I look through icons, ridiculously long start menus, and nested folder lists to find the damn application I want. Just type in the name and it pops up. Awesome.

http://desktop.google.com/

Just get rid of the shit you dont need on the side, or opt for the floating search. I can't see how anyone wouldnt benefit from this.

yeah, it's awesome - osx has this built in as 'spotlight' .. speeds up my workflow so much- finding files, attaching to emails, etc. i now have a bare minimum of apps in the dock and just launch them by using spotlight, so fast.

I have Trillian pro 3.1 and I've NEVER gotten it to run the Jabber plugin correctly. My old Trillian 2.0 worked fine with Jabber...

Internally here at work we run our own Exodus server(subset of Jabber IIRC) to allow IT folks across the offices to talk to each other.

You do not need the @gmail.com. Account name is sufficient.

It depends on the client. Some clients look at the missing "@gmail.com" as an error, some substitute in @jabber.org, or @talk.google.com, etc.

Oh ok, well the windos version does not need it. :P

I don't think people realize what this whole jabber thing really means.

Google Talk is cool not because of its (IMO lame) client. The client is probably the least impressive detail of the entire affair. Google Talk is an open comms infrastructure that is open to ANYBODY. At the very least its a high capacity XMPP server that is open to 3rd party developers to use without any fear of being blocked or otherwise shut down. It elevates the OPEN standard XMPP to the fore in a way that no one else could have done outside of MSN or AIM - and neither of them are interested because they have their own agendas.

No, the real kicker for all of this is the freely available and OPEN access to SIP networks (those things that VOIP systems use). Google explains much of the protocols that they already use for voice (and devs will have access to this) and plan to openly document their SIP bridge as well.

At the 3rd party and architecture level this is extremely cool.

From Google's Corporate Philosophy page (http://www.google.com/intl/en/corporate/tenthings.html ), yesterday:

2. It's best to do one thing really, really well.
Google does search. Google does not do horoscopes, financial advice or chat. With the largest research group in the world focused exclusively on solving search problems, Google knows what it does well and how it could be done better.

As of this morning it was changed to:

Google does search. With one of the world's largest research groups focused exclusively on solving search problems, we know what we do well, and how we could do it better.

I kind of expected more, but I haven't played with it much yet (haven't touched voice, but that's not a feature I'd use anyway). Also, last week, rumble was that Gmail would be open to the public relatively soon.

Yup. They have an 'explanation' at the footer.

Oh, crap, I didn't see that. Bonus points for being clever.

One thing I *did* like. . .no more alt-tabbing. You could just tab. Everybody needs to rip that off, stat.

To me the biggest annoyance in the way this is set up is the requirement to have a gmail account. MSNM doesn't require me to have a hotmail account, and I really don't care about freemail in any way, shape, or form.

It's good for what it is. I was expecting ad links in chat text, so I'm happy. I recommend turning off all notifications for folks at work. The chat notification could lead to some embarrassment. I also like the collapsable stack of joined chat windows. Good job so far, Google!

I'm also waiting patiently for this:

Google Talk is still in beta, and we're working hard to add features and make improvements. We're just not quite ready yet to reveal the other cool things we've got planned. We can say this, though: we believe strongly in user choice and open standards, and we are committed to letting users access Google Talk using the client and platform of their choice, as well as to enabling our users to talk with users from other service providers.

I can't wait to drop kick AIM and Yahoo IM.

I'm just irked that there's going to be another player in the IM game. I have to use Trillian because my friends are scattered across three different IM platforms. I dislike having to use Trillian because it limits you from using some of the advanced features of each individual service. Fortunately, with Google pushing the "open" angle, a feature-complete Trillian plugin will (likely) be possible (How is current Trillian Jabber support?).

Oh well. . .I guess if any company has a chance of making a One IM Standard these days, it's Google.

You can use the current Jabber plugin for Trillian.

it's totally awesome.
i friggin hate the auto-replaced emoticons :)

I meant like "/me runs through the wall and crushes you" type ones, hehe. Yeah the smiley icon things missing is good

What's another account?
revenantkioku at the gmail dot com
Still gonna use adium cause it rocks face though.

Wow, the voice chat on this thing is totally tits. I have a shitty DSL connection here at the office and just tested with a fried of mine and it sounded amazing. I'll stick with Trillian for IMing though.
