Dean and Gene Ween. Ween are one of the greatest bands of our time. I am constantly disappointed when I ask people if they've heard of Ween. The vast majority have not. Normally it's "cool" to know about unknown bands but in this case I am honestly bummed that the band isn't bigger. They have a good following but I feel like they should be appreciated as legends of our time! I feel like the rare instance where someone knows about Ween in the general population is when Beavis and Butthead ripped on them.

But what makes Ween so great? In my opinion it is their diversity. Metal, alternative, country, slow jams, electronica.... is there anything they can't do? The answer is no. The purpose of this thread is to talk about the greatness of Ween and to expose Ween to those that have not heard them before! Take a gander at these classics.... with your ears!

Bananas and blow

You Fucked Up

Buckingham Green

Buenos Tardes Amigo

Stay Forever

Don't laugh (i love you)

I'm Waving my Dick in the wind

It's Gonna Be a Long Night

and that's just a small taste of the endless classics. there are also mountains of great live performances and different variations on the songs. i love Ween... and I want you to love them too!

Ween are (were?) a super fucking talented and incredibly musically diverse band. I saw them perform in Madison in October 2007 and it was awesome. My favorite album is Quebec, I think it's their most musically mature and interesting album, and one of my top 5 favorite albums ever.

Also I just posted this in the guitar solo thread: Woman and Man. Such an epic song, the percussion is phenomenal. Apparently the drummer was in a car accident before recording the album and was told he'd probably never play drums again (if I recall correctly). He showed them.

That was off their last album which I didn't really care for much, but I always chuckle at the final song "Your Party". After all the crazy songs about partying and getting fucked up that they put out, their swan song on an album about growing up and adult relationships is a song about going to a party with "the wife" and enjoying games of chance and tri-colored pastas. lol

Also, maybe my favorite song of theirs: Transdermal Celebration (off of Quebec)

And for the hell of it, the song that got me into Ween back in the summer of 2004: A Tear for Eddie (a tribute to Funkadelic's guitarist Eddie Hazel after he died)

I could never get into their pre-Chocolate and Cheese albums, though. *shrug*

quebec is awesome. transdermal is a classic. i think tried and true might be my favorite off that album. if i had to pick a favorite ween album (they are all good!) it would probably be godweensatan!

Also, thanks to Lambtron here for introducing me to Ween back in 2004. Don't know if I'd even know about them if it weren't for him. At least I think it was him...

yeah lambtron is a big fan. i remember reading about them on gaf and a dude in college gave me quebec before it came out too. god bless these gents!

Only heard Mollusk and Quebec, but both are fantastic. Tried and True sounds amazing with a good pair of headphones.

They were a great band. Their music is always on my portable devices.

It sucks they broke up. Would've been nice to have a better last album than La Cucaracha.

I absolutely love Ween. Sadly I never got to see them perform.

I own Chocolate and Cheese, Quebec, The Mollusk, and White Pepper. Not sure if I have really listened to their other stuff. Their songs can sound so epic, deep and important and then be about something ridiculous. Though sometimes they actually have some solid meaning in their own way. Very talented guys

Buenos Tardes Amigo for example, what a crazy story in that song. The style is so different too. My favorite might be The Mollusk, such a peaceful song.

Ferrio would be proud of this thread.

I believe it was he who was pretty much the biggest fan here.

Love Ween. godweensatan and Live at Stubbs are my usual go to, but The Mollusk and White Pepper and...just a solid Discography in general.

I was introduced to them through B+B. All I know is, the girl in that Push the Little Daisies video is absolutely beautiful and she should've been my wife.

I saw them summer of 97 on their mollusk tour at proud Larry's in Oxford Mississippi. Fun concert, bar that had a small stage. Literally an arms length from them. They were sooooo drunk and taking beers from the audience. Great times!

Oh man, there's Ween fans up in here? Awesome. My all time favorite band, and criminally underrated song writers. I've seen every show they've ever done in Stdney since the Pure Guava tour with the DAT machine as a two piece and followed them half way around the country on their last, and now final, tour. Breaks my heart they're gone.

You heard the final Gene Ween EP?

And I'd like to be the first to post the pop perfection of what Deaner was Talking About.

I could honestly write a million word about this band, and might do later when I'm not on my phone.

I was Debating wether or not to go with what Deaner was talking about. But had to link Gabrielle. Deaner is Truly a Masterpiece Sir.

Ween are genuinely brilliant songwriters. Some off the best of all time. People don't take them seriously cause of the silliness.

Holy fuck how did I miss this topic? This thread is officially the best Neogaf music thread ever created ( sorry "what are your favorite punk songs?" you're second best now)

Been a ween fan since 1996, one of my top 5 bands

wow I saw them in Chicago October 2007, and that was the day after they played your show in Madison . And yeah when they played Woman and Man it was crazy. That was an unreleased song when they played, so I didn't know what to expect. I remember being ripped off my ass and laughing while yelling to my friend " this solo is intense!" because it just kept going on and on. It was awesome

I haven't been back to oxford in years....

A coworker of mine moved here from Texas about five years ago (moved back last year). Broke up with his 5 year gf and was a total horn dog so we took him to Oxford.

"There will be nothing but hot women in white sun dresses and cowboy boots."

He didn't believe me.

He was really surprised!

"I've never heard Ween!"

Yes you have!

My all time favorite band. I had the pleasure of getting to see them live back in 2010. Amazing show. I was pretty shocked when they broke up but I am still optimistic that they will get back together someday. Brothers can't stand to be apart for too long.

It was a friend of mine who interviewed Gene when he dropped the bomb he was leaving. Forever he is my friend who broke up Ween.

Oh yeah, Gener also covered up one of his most beautiful songs in brown sludge, which still couldn't hide how perfect Birthday boy is.

Yeah, This song is as old to a 21 year old as Smoke On The Water was to me at 21. Insane.

You're both welcome!

At this point I'm pretty sure The Pod is my favorite of their records, probably because I've listened to all the other ones a hundred times. The first Ween show (of four) I ever saw is up on Archive.org. I can't believe it was almost 11 years ago now, christ I'm getting old. Anyway they played a killllller set and it's worth checking out the recording of it.

I can still remember when 12 Golden Country Greats came out, which completely blew my mind. I was just flicking through the W section hoping to see a new Ween record, as this was pre-internet and I just went to my record store once a week to flick through for Ween or Beck new releases. I'd never considered country music at all, and they released a mostly beautiful country album, with a few digressions. Such a brave & huge move for a band, and they went in and did it right. Ween have opened my eyes to so much great music that i'd never have given the time to. Holding You is one of the best Ween songs, and popping in the CD with that song coming straight on was a pretty special moment.

I also got one of the 'accidental pressings' of the CD with the Muhammad ali Ali sample intact.

The second time I saw them (the night after the show I posted above) they played "Fluffy" as a part of the encore. It was a highlight in my life to that point.

Man, it's so monsterous live. Wish I saw them with the Shit Creek Boys.

I have a tape of the first time I saw them in Parramatta in Sydney in 93, I was sitting on the stage corner and they were playing with their DAT machine. It was basically a religous experience. First time I heard a bunch of stuff, I think they even played Freedom of 76. Cover It In Gas was pretty exciting live as was Going Gets Tough. Wish I could find that tape...
