Welcome to Azeroth! --- World of Warcraft Impressions Thread

MrCheez

President/Creative Director of Grumpyface Studios
I figured we could use a WoW thread on the main forum for traffic-reasons. Perhaps this thread can be used for first impressions, comments, and questions?

For meeting up with fellow GAF-players and deciding on what server to choose, please use the WoW thread from the Online/Matchup forum: http://forums.gaming-age.com/showthread.php?t=24241&page=1&pp=50

But anyway, the wait is finally over! See you guys in game and hope you enjoy. :)

The new wallpapers rock.

Nice! :) I've been switching out different WoW wallpapers on my desktop for about a month now. ;)

Now I must get to bed so I can wake up and go buy the WoW Collector's Edition! :D Can't wait to plunge back into the game!

*dreams sweet WoW dreams*

seems like GAF will probably have a few clusters of players on a few different servers...

oh well, that serves me fine.

I can live without griefing... and find enjoyment in the endgame content as well as been able to choose to PVP at my leisure.

It seems like people are bouncing around to servers that there friends are on, but the most people together are on the Mal'Ganis Central PVP server. At least so far. Check the thread in the online section.

Also, I CAN'T WAIT! I have something to do tonight too :( Oh well, received the good word we aren't going out of town to visit relatives for Turkey Day. Which means WoW playtime increased a lot!

I had to go get on the bus to go up to get my copy, but the fucker that was opening the store took forever so i missed the other bus to college. So now I'm here with WoW collector's edition. This box is not small @ all, and on top of that I had to lug that bad boy down like 3 blocks in my bookbag. Heh, I don't remember the last time I skipped school to play a game. Very nostalgic lol.

Picked it up last night with Solrak. Fantastic so far, with no lag whatsoever. Smoothest launch ever thus far. Got my Gnome mage Blimey up to level 6 and had to call it a night.

You can find Solrak and I on the Argent Dawn (RP-East) server. Man, the General chat on the RP servers are entertaining to say the least. I chuckled several times. It's also refreshing to see no L337 pRr3t2e7s names running around too.

Having tons of fun and look forward to meeting up with Solrak today (he's a human).

If you were in open beta, you don't have to install. Just create an account and input the CD Key. I'm on Tichondrius. Undead Warrior Level 7. Was at the Fry's Midnight Madness thing. There must have been close to 3000 people there. The line was insane. It wrapped around the store and into the street two times, and Frys is not a small building. It's an enormous warehouse.

In keeping with my tradition for games that I'm missing...

Fuck you all.

Anyone NOT getting this game till say... OH... Dec 17th? Can anyone SULK with me?!

...and even then I only get a month to play it.

Between finals and start of the spring semester? I feel your pain.

I'm in Scotland and I'm missing Halo 2, GTA:SA, MGS3, MP2, HL2, and WoW.

WOW indeed...

I get a month in the states where I get to rock some of these games.

What's a real kick in the ass is the fact that the servers here are tight as shit... the ports needed to play, say, XBL or WoW are all closed... FUCK ME.

I did manage to play Minish Cap though. Great game!

Anyways... enjoy... I eagerly look forward to joining in (low leveled, of course) with the GAF crowd in mid Dec.

bear with me I'm trying to look busy so this post may ramble....

Although I gave up bounty hunting to get this game I spent my money and HD space on HL2. Next Paycheck I'll be getting this.

Oh I also left SWG cause the BH grind, although no where as bad as jedi, is a bitch.

Speaking of BH is there anything close to it in WoW?

I read the lvl cap is 60 for the moment, when I read that I kinda became iffy since last MMO that I played that had a lvl cap was CoH, and before you get half way to the cap you run out of content....please say the same thing isn't true here?!

How many characters can you have a server?

Is the SE version REALLY worth it? The 10 day trail I was going to give to a friend but I dunno if he'll really play it and the pets...well if when I get on I plan to be a hunter so I'll have pets anyway.

Hows the Druid work? I thought (according to my time on CoH) shape shifting was something technically hard to do? How did it work out in WoW?

one last thing....

I read the FAQ on death and decaying. Let me see if I get this straight. You die, either get rezed and have decay or become a gohstand find your corpse BUT while your a ghost someone can come along and rez you...do you still get 25% decay?

i would ask this on the offical board but, it's already pitchforks, torches and soapboxes. Also the games been out a full day almost and I may get it next week...OMG!!!111 I may be a NOOB!

I am with you Apple Jax. Damn SLI nForce 4s are damn scarce. I can't build my comp until I get that.

Just wondering something, but is the first month free? And do you have to enter in a CC or a 60-day GC to get the free month ? I'm asking because I want to buy the game first then get the card later.

Edit: this thread should be a sticky

Screenies coming soon. :)

As for the CC situation, yes in order to create an account you will need a CC for verification, but you can use game cards to continue your monthly subscription.

Yeah, your first month is free. Then they bill your CC for whichever subscrition u asked for. 15.99 a month reoccurring is the one I picked. I don't want blizzard taking 77 bucks from me now. (doubt it if I even have 77 bucks)

BH?

>I read the lvl cap is 60 for the moment, when I read that I kinda became iffy since last MMO that I played that had a lvl cap was CoH, and before you get half way to the cap you run out of content....please say the same thing isn't true here?!

There's lots of content all the way. I've never really ran out of quests. More like having to dump quests that aren't worth the effort anymore. I'm not sure, but I think you could play two or three characters for each faction and bring them up through completely different quest lines. And besides, it seems the real "Warcraft" stuff will begin at lvl 60 anyway, with massive raids, battlegrounds and worthwhile PvP rewards (even on regular PvE servers, mind you!).

>Is the SE version REALLY worth it? The 10 day trail I was going to give to a friend but I dunno if he'll really play it and the pets...well if when I get on I plan to be a hunter so I'll have pets anyway.

I'm getting it for the artbook and the soundtrack when it launches in Europe. These pets are non-combative. If you're a hunter, you get both these and your special tamed hunter pets.

>Hows the Druid work? I thought (according to my time on CoH) shape shifting was something technically hard to do? How did it work out in WoW?

Shape-shifting is a regular spell that takes a few seconds to activate. I don't think they added reagents to it. No hassle.

Somehow, I ended up picking this up today. The CE version. lol I'm so weak. I wanted a change after staying up for 4 nights straight hoping for drops off the Black Belt mobs in FFXI >.< Kind of a message that I need to try a game that can be played solo and a bit more casually. Off to learn how to play!

How many characters can you have per account ? I'm gonna pick this up today for my GF's bday present, but might want to play sometimes also...

well me and keebler fooled around as night elves needless to say I was having fun

First impressions:

Where did 12 hours of my life just go.

Best. Game. Ever. This generation or any other. Haters be damned.

ok, here are my impressions...

graphicwhore - c- really on a technical level these graphics are bad.. low poly, edges every where, low texture detail.. I mean I am early into the game but it's like I've warped back to 2000 on my PC.. and before you ask, yes I cranked everything up max in my settings (which runs fine on a 9600 Pro) however...

art - a+ really, the art direction in the game counters a lot of the bad technical aspects.. low detail textures, but they almost have a watercolor-like appearance.. low detail models but they are designed and animated beautifully. I would give graphics overall a b+.. they could be a+++ if they gave the models some more polys..

no zoning - yes I know they weren't the first to do it, but I've never played an MMORPG without zoning before.. man it changes the game.. makes you feel more like you are in a world and less like a game. a++

modifiable ui - very slick.. again I know blizzard wasn't the first to do it, but it is awesome.. downloaded gypsymod.. almost like a whole new game.

questing - previous to this, COH weas the best questing system I partook in.. I also still think COH's badge and souvenier system is better from what I've seen so far.. but actually giving out the quests and quest objectives goes to WoW hands down. it pulls you into the game like a single player RPG would

ok, that's the thing I loved.. now the things that are meh (really haven't come across anything I don't like yet).

another middle ages mmorpg.. I'm sorry, but as much personality as this game has I have a hard time getting past that I am either a wizard, fighter, thief, etc. again. and that I am fighting real animals and moving my way up to mythical monsters. again. like I said, the game has personality to separate it from the crowd, slightly, but at the end it is more D&D.

combat - kind of goes hand in hand with the above.. while it is perfectly functional, it is the same type of combat system. again. click on your auto attack and pop off the others as they come up. and everything comes back up at the same time. I really like what cOH did with combat. it was realtime, fast, and never boring.. this is the same ol same ol.

classes/professions - again, I'm not very far into the game, but is all you really can get are 2 main professions and a pick from 1 of eight classes? Maybe I am spoiled from the original EQ, or the seemingly limitless UO, or the dozens of combinations in COH, but it just seems very shallow... my buddy was instructing me during the gamr and I said "That's it?!?!?" His response? "Yeah, oh well, what're ya gonna do?"

well, that's it so far.. played for about 4 hours.. got level six and am nowhere near my starting point (Valley of Trials). the game is fun, and it will have me for a few months, but really, a cross between not standing out and my absolute casual nature towards MMOs and I don't know how long it will keep me beyond that.

At lev 6, you haven't seen anything yet. You don't get skill points and your first real gear until level 10. If you want to mod the UI, download kosmos (or is it cosmos)?.

So is this a game where you can play for an hour and actually get something done?

Yes. Due to the resting/fatigue system, you will get more exp than normal. You can also finish like 3-4 quests and log off happy. Don't need to find a party, camp a mob, be lev 60, etc.

Hmmm, I'm going to log onto FFXI this weekend, spend a little time with my character and then cancel my content ID, for good this time I think.

I might try WoW, or just wait for Guild Wars - I'm really aching for someone to recreate the free experience of PSO 1.

I downloaded gyspsymod already.. what is the difference between that and cosmos?

oh, and the UI customization is insane... very nice. plan on making some nice scripts and macros for the addon directory.

As promised, here are some pics of my early adventuring:

Blimey in awe on the outskirts of Ironforge

Blimey chilling at the local brewery with Kimi (easily the cutest rogue in the land)

I'm loving the game as much as usual. :) The lag and crashing problems are of course frustrating, but I'm sure they'll be gone forever (for the most part) in a few days.

I seriously hope many "hmm the MMO genre doesn't do anything for me"-people give this game a shot. It is just such an addicting and unique experience, especially when you play with friends.

I'll have some screenshots soon. :)

Word.

I just d/l'ed the gypsymod UI, I really like the fact that you have a 2nd quickbar, and the ability to move windows around. Anxious to try it out as using a GREAT UI adds sooo much more to the experience.

Oooo I gotta try these out. I've been preaching how useful Cosmos is, but I'm starting to hear that Gypsy is even better. (Cosmos seems to get all screwed up with every new patch, too.)
