The first few I think will be small $10k buyin events- ESPN taped some "WSOP Circuit" events before the actual World Series started over the past few months. It's Harrah's competition to the WPT.

The top 100 in WSOP points at the end of the season will be in the WSOP Tournament of Champions freeroll.
 
What's the rationale behind delaying Main Event coverage to October? I can understand not having live coverage, but a week or two's delay is more than enough time to get the editing done and to throw in whatever interviews you want to do. Personally, all the "behind the scenes" looks and player biographies bore me, I just want to see table action.
 
They're probably using the extended coverage to help cover the dry time of sports during the Summertime, airing the main event when they actually have competition.

The FoxSports tourney they've been showing live is kinda interesting, although pretty slow, just like a normal tournament haha.
 
Last year it was 7 one-hour shows, anyone know if they're going to increase that this year since there were so many more players? Wasn't it like a 50% increase over last year?

It was a one hundred percent increase from last year, actually. Somewhere around 2500 to more than 5000 this year. But, unless I'm remembering incorrectly, the 2003 tournament had more TV hours devoted to the main event than the 2004 tournament did. In 2003, though, there were no other events even mentioned, let alone televised.

edit: According to the broadcast schedule, they're planning on 12 hour-long episodes devoted to the main event over a 6 week period. Starting October 11, finishing November 15.

WSOP 2003 Main Event had 7 one hour episodes.
WSOP 2004 Main Event had 10 one hour episodes.

However, the main difference between 03 and 04 is that they devoted two episodes to the final table in WSOP 2003, whereas they only devoted one in 2004.

I'm guessing 2005 will get two episodes for the final table, hence the 12 episode count.

Here's what I'm pretty sure the episode break-down will be:

I think the final table coverage this year will once again depend on how the final table plays out.

ESPN was orginially gonna do 2 hours of 2004's final table, but the final table play ended up being fairly boring and short. There was very little play; the people just busted out one-by-one with nothing really memorable or dramatic happening, so they cut it to an hour (and I think they covered an extra hour of another day).

If Matusow, Raymer, AND Ivey all make the final 9 this year, I think we're guaranteed 2 hours of final table coverage, especially if they end up being the final 3 :).

Some online sites will be tracking the final table live tomorrow- they treat it as a normal table you can join and spectate. I know Pokerchamps is doing it this year. Pokerstars did it last year, so I'm assuming they will this year.

Should be fun to watch.

Bah, I'm glad Raymer is out. He's a fat lucky lard. Sucks about Ivey though. Not big on Matusow but he's the only pro left so I'm pushing for him to win. Hopefully we don't see a Matusow blow up with 10 people left.

November is sweeps month. So ESPN tries to stack all of thier good features (and bad movies) in that month to boost ratings.

I guess the only good news is I'll probably forget all this by the time October rolls around and it will all seem fresh to me.

You absolutely can not deny that Raymer is a great player. 1st out of 2400 and 25th out out of 5600? No card rush lasts that long. Worth noting is that last night, each and every time he put his money in he had the best hand, and got drawn out on. Is he overrated? Probably. But he's not *just* lucky.

The Matusow blow up has reportedly already happened on the first day. Both had VERY playable stacks. Matusow raises to steal with 33, and gets reraised. Matusow reraised all-in, and is called by QQ. He caught a set, though, and said he learned his lesson (from this tournament).

And no, it's not Men the Master. Mike is the only named pro left in the event.
 
I'm not saying he isn't good, but I am saying that he has absolutely nothing on alot of the pros, and he is extremely lucky. Besides the WSOP Main Event, he has done absolutely nothing of note and I guarantee you this year and probably the rest of his life will be the same.

That guy Tex Barch has actually played the WSOP several times and has several money finishes but I still really wish a real pro can win this thing for once.

Title: Raymer Cannot Be Stopped

Gen Wattanabe goes all-in for his last . Greg mentions that he knows he's behind, but decides to call. Wattanabe shows J-J with one spade. Raymer turns over 8-6 - no spades. The flop comes 7s-3s-2s. Raymer has no pair, and no solid draw, while Wattanabe still has an overpair and a flush draw. The turn is a non-spade 5, giving Raymer an open ended straight draw, but he's still behind. The river brings a non-spade 9. Raymer hits his runner-runner straight, busts Wattanabe, and is now sitting atop a stack of $1,600,000.

Calling an all-in with 7-2? What an idiot! Matusow clearly made the wrong move!

Think again. The blinds in the above situation were $20k-$40k. Matusow made a raise with 7-2 in an attempt at a steal. The standard raise would probably be $120,000. Sheikhan doubled up to $400,000 after this hand, which means that his stack size was a little less than $200,000. That means that Matusow only had to call $80,000 more to win $320,000 (his $120k raise plus Sheikhan's stack). 4:1 odds with noone to act behind you, and no betting for the rest of the hand is an easy call with ANY two cards. No hand, barring a pocket pair 7's or higher, is a 4:1 favorite (or better) against 72o. Matusow easily made the right move in this situation, despite how it looks.

My point is that Cardplayer's updates are plagued with incomplete information. I can almost guarantee you that Watanbe was really shortstacked, Raymer was in a blind, and was getting the right price to call. No good player would make a call with 86 without a good reason.

Blow-up? You would've called with KK in that situation, too. The sickest thing is KK vs AA, catching a K on the flop, then losing to runner runner flush.

Talk about highs and lows.
 
Actually he's talking about a later hand where Mike tried to push a bluff for $2 mill and his opponent went all in. Mike thought he sensed weakness, didn't have anything himself.

What's wrong with Matusow? He's a great player with a great sense of humor and personality, and is great fun to watch. Him being by far the best player left in the tournament is reason enough to cheer for him.

And it's godawful that he gets a brutal suckout to knock him out of the event :(.

...Yes, I'm so obviously anti-poker. The fact alone that I know who Mike Matusow is should probably have thrown you onto a different response (I'd have accepted "Is it weird that people cheer for sports teams?", for example) but no bother. I watch poker, I play poker, I just find it incredibly awkward to root for a poker player. And Mike Matusow makes me want to hurt any living thing around me.

So he trash talks at the table. As we all know, noone trash talks others in sports, they're all completely civil and don't let any adrenaline get to their head whatsoever.

Exactly... I turned it off about an hour after he busted.

The commentators even lost interest in the game. We probably missed like 5 hands while they were trying to get Puggy Pearson to sing :)

Once the guy that bluffed out Ivey and Raymer in the round of 27 (Andrew Black or something?) busts, then there will be NO ONE to talk about. No one else is even remotely interesting as a player.
