Well, this is it. It's been fun.

AlteredBeast

Fork 'em, Sparky!
I have been taking a long look at my life the past few weeks, and really ever since I got back from peru and I don't like how I have become. I get no benefit from coming to this website and since my father passed away a couple weeks ago, I think it is time I make some major changes in my life. Videogames aren't important to me anymore, I haven't bought one in years, after all. Movies, music, and everything else that is so cynically discussed on GAF only brings me down and takes all the enjoyment I have out of life out of those fields of entertainment and nothing positive comes from posting on this messageboard.

I would like to say goodbye to Hotarubi especially. Thanks for the mixes, you made coming here more worthwhile then you will ever know. You have influenced my tastes in music forever.

To the rest of you oldtimers out there, thanks, too.

To Kudrock and FnordChan, your stuff is in the mail.

So long,

Eric Jacob

Your father just died, it's not uncommon to feel like this. It will pass.

mourn his death but make sure you spend more time celebrating his life...your father wouldn't want to see fun and enjoyment sucked out of your life.

Why not just post less instead of cutting yourself off cold turkey? That way if these boards really aren't for you anymore, you'll leave them naturally...

I feel the same way sometimes, not about NeoGAF specifically, but there are some friends I know who have similar hobbies as I do but they get their jollies out of denigrating, or being coolly ironic about movies, music, or games that I enjoy. I guess it's hip to be an asshole about those sorts of things (see: Drinky Crow, Demi), but sometimes I really just want to enjoy something for what it is rather than be a cynical douche about it.

Recent conversation to highlight this:
"Hey, Pearl Jam's new album is pretty great. Vedder's vocals are really raw, though."
"Of course, what would you expect after all the years of drug abuse that guy's put himself through."
"Uh, wtf, I don't think Eddie Vedder uses hard drugs, dude..."
"He's a rock musician. They all abuse their bodies. He's probably a crackhead."
Way to bring me down, dude. :(

I feel the same way, that's why I hardly ever bother posting.

Later AlteredBeast. I hope you stop in again when things aren't so rough. It's understandable though, GAF is a clock eater and a lot of times wasteful. Still, the people aren't so bad.. Anyway, take care man. Hope things work out for you.

If you put bell woods and Diablos on your ignore list, the music threads become much more tolerable.

I've announced my departure from the IGN Boards three times. Once when my grandmother died, once after I got busted for cheating on an exam in university, and once after I broke up with my girlfriend. I returned each time. This is over a span of four years.

Take some time, grieve the death, and return. Oh, don't forget to pick up the latest Dashboard Confessional and Linkin Park releases while you're at it.

buy.

Hmmm, not sure if we've ever conversed about things here on GAF but seeing your alias on GAF sparked a positive vibe in my head. Seems I have indirectly liked your posts. I've been drinking too. Still, in light of this, I wish you the best, and hope, sincerely, your evaluation of your life leads you in a positive direction.

PS Zelda comes out this fall.....you'll be seduced back into gaming and GAF...GAF's allure is that of a siren, who by all accounts, could be a twin of Monica Bellucci. Making it irresistable. Where am I? This isn't my computer.

I've always wondered about this. When a person makes a farewell post on a message board, does he come back to see the replies, wanting to see who his true e-friends were? Or does he simply walk away, never to look back again?

I think it's more of a "I need change right now and by making this post I'll have a more concrete reminder of change I need to make thereby strengthening my resolve." It's a determined step in the direction he wants to take, and it adds a bit of order to his life. I think we all go a little overboard when we finally decide to change our lives' directions; being a little over-zealous is in those circumstances.

uhm, was that intentional? heh.

That's how I tend to say "bye" since it sounds the same when said and buying stuff is awesome.

What was it originally?

I've never really blabbed with you Altered Beast, aside from some games you were selling awhile ago. Have fun in what you do; sorry to hear about your dad.

GAF can suck away at the fun of some things, but if you take it with a grain of salt and don't get too worked up on it and try discussing what you actually enjoy, the place seems a lot more easygoing and fun to be at. That's why I left originally; just angry people talking about what they hate and no one with similar interests to make posting matter. But it's better now and I have more fun with things.

Maybe your mission trip changed your priorities and you've "awakened" and GAF doesn't fit the new you. Either way, hope things work out for you.

Red Scarlet, I don't know what your avatar was when the other dude made his initial post but I'm looking at it right now and it's a really keen-looking red devil silhouette with flapping wings and I wanna know - where's it from? It's cooooool.

What makes you think post count has anything to do with it? In fact, more often than not it's stupid junior members, who have inadvertently provided a few laughs (for the wrong reasons), that are promptly tagged.

Yeah, many of the most awesome posters have no tags, many very lame ones do. So it's no big deal either way.

You'd think that with over 4500 posts i might have saiud soemthing slightly memorable. Unfortunately not though. Its really boring just having member, I want something wierd and original.

Sorry about your father. :(

If you feel you need to make a change I say go for it. What ever it takes to improve the quality of life is worth it. As for the boards, they will still be here should you decide to return just don't take them so seriously..

I stopped visiting the gaming forum for similar reasons (E3 was an exception). I still visit OT too much but like someone said, the trick is not to take it too seriously.

OTOH, if you can quit it, you'll save hours of your life per week so if you do it, good for you :)

catfish: I'm not nearly as picky or annoying compared to some people on here, clearly you don't read through enough music threads.

Anyway, to what's actually important: Best of luck to you AB, so sorry to hear about your father. Take care.

AB: As a former ex-GAFfer, I can safely say that you'll be back at some point. The lack of enjoyment in everything you're going through is a classic hallmark of grief -- it WILL ease up someday, though it can take a while. At that point, you'll be welcomed back here...as long as you don't buy a Wii, since we don't want those people around here. But you get the point. :)

I'm sincerely sorry for your loss, and hope you'll continue to work through things so that you can enjoy mind-numbing things like games and idle chatter with strangers (oh wait, that's us) in the future. Thank you for the mixes that you sent me before you left on your mission -- I enjoyed them, and I'm sorry that I never had the opportunity in a future exchange to repay the favor.

Now psycho_snake, I remember a long time ago, you did indeed have a tag ;)

Take a time outside the WHOLE internet, it's helpful at times yet very hard to achieve. I did it for a month last year, but resisting the impulse was extremely painful.

Were doin something right boys!

Pretty much.

Later, AB. Hope everything goes well.

I quit GAF for a while after my dad died, but it was just for like 2 months because I rapidly had to plan moving to seattle.

What would John Smith do?

Seriously though, good luck. But if you're reading this, it's too late...you haven't changed! They always come back. We always come back!

Really sorry to hear about your father, my condolences.

I remember when you encouraged my posting and hoped that GAF would get more members like me. I know you probably don't, but I do. Thanks man - I still appreciate it.

Hopefully, you come back one day.

Later.
