does anyone own or have used one of these Western Digital HDDs? i have the 160gb external HDD that lights up w/ pink and blue when powered up. though it doesnt have an on/off switch, so do i just unplug the thing or what? because i dont know if doing this is safe for the HDD.

By "powered up" do you mean connected to the pc with firewire or usb? If so it's fine to hot-swap the device. If you're nervous about doing so, read the instructions that came with the drive to ensure it's hot swap compatible. Hope that helps.
