What’s your idea of the worst vacation ever?

I've had some lousy vacations. Thankfully, they were all on the cheap.

First of all, any vacation that involves taking a train in the US. Forget it. It will be uncomfortable. You definitely want to get a sleeper car if you are bent on traveling this way. It's not fun. It's not interesting. It looks just like you would imagine a slowly dying long-lived transportation business to be. Put this one in the ground, finally.

Secondly, if you're going to visit your grand parents in another state, go ahead and book that room at the hotel. It's the only way you're going to get any time to yourself where you won't feel obligated to give them your undivided attention the whole time you're there. Additionally, old people like it warm. Like, 78 F warm. All the time. Anything under 78 F and they get chilled. Me? I prefer 68 F. Can't sleep with it so warm.

Lastly, never plan your vacation around visiting a self-absorbed friend who is easily convinced you really traveled all that distance just to see her. Remember, she's self-absorbed. She hasn't made any plans to entertain you. Her presence is sufficient, right? Nope...

a few years ago I thought it would be fun to stay at a hotel at the beach that my parents used to always take me to when I was small.

let’s just say the past 30 years was not kind to that hotel.
Never do something twice, it always kills the best memory you had of it.

why? what happen?
It was super rundown and there were kids running rampant all over the place. As soon as we got in the room I noticed the bathroom stunk and it was because the shower drain was clogged up. Had to have maintenance come in to get it flowing.

seemed like the place hadn’t been renovated in 20 years.

The Carousel in Ocean City, MD.

Easy.

Being dropped in the middle of a foreign country with no knowledge of the language.

Apparently there are people that do that for fun. To me it sounds like an actual nightmare I might have.

Not so much of a vacation but went to SF on the companies dime with my lady. Probably should have researched the hotel better as it was right on the edge of the tenderloin. Couldn't sleep because there was a crazy homeless guy yelling at street level all night (we were on the 15th floor and could still hear it no problem). Also, ran into the same panhandlers every single time we left the hotel all with the same shtick offering directions and shit.

Wife wants to go to Auschwitz to visit 3 majors camps, I learnt about them during my years in New York schools so I'm less inclined but a trip to Europe is the part I'm interested in more than the camps. Having kids not over the recommended age of 14 also makes it a no no or leaving the kids out of that part of the trip.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Hollywood? The place isn’t worth visiting for anything you think you’ll like as an outsider. Partying with people in Hollywood is cool though, but you won’t make those friends during a vacation.

Any kind of road trip is the bane of my existence. I don't like driving or being the passenger. I can't stand sitting in a car for so many hours. Sleeping is uncomfortable and awkward. You can't really watch movies on a laptop if it's sunny outside. There's only so many albums you can listen to before your ear drums get tired. My parents are the type to crank their own tunes on the CD player anyways, so I could never properly read books during road trips. I remember we drove to Orlando from Texas when I was a kid, and it was really hard to focus on my brand new Goosebumps books with Michael Jackson and Celine Dion blasting the whole way lol. Universal Studios was cool, though.

Visiting relatives you don't really know that well is another one. It's always awkward and boring, and my parents made do PLENTY of those kinds of trips when I was a kid. You fly across the country to sit in some old persons house in the middle of winter in Minnesota with really nothing to do except attend a wedding, maybe a little city sightseeing if THEY feel like it, then you pack up and go home. Yawn.

I hope I never go on a cruise again. It's just a lousy experience.

Which cruise? I went on Carnival to Cozumel with my family, and it was pretty relaxing. Saw the Mayan ruins and went jet skiing on a white sand beach. You can loosely follow the entertainment schedule (stand up comedians, live music, etc) and just lounge around the deck, swim, eat good food, whatever. It's a good break from internet/social media if you choose it to be. I went in 2015, and I pretty much turned off my smartphone for 4-5 days. It was pleasant.

Extremely hot, sunny, crowded beaches with drunken, drug addled louts, people only either sunbathing, drinking or clubbing and nothing but beaches, hotels, bars and clubs.

That sounds like the typical brits on Ibiza experience to me.. : D

My worst holiday was on Djerba in march 1995, which is an island in front of Tunisia.
The hotel itself looked like the Taj Mahal. Really splendid.

It was 20 degrees Celsius, but it was too windy, almost stormy, to go outside, there was Ramadan, so everybody there was pissed and unfriendly almost all the time, when we went to the beach there were immediately 10 arab dudes surrounding my girlfriend (no joke), and we heard rumors of a german girl that was raped a week before when she went alone to the neighboring hotel for visiting the night club there in the evening.

At the door where the hotel bordered on the beach, a guy with a machine gun sat.

So, in the end we stayed for a week in our room, watched foreign tv channels, and ate a lot of food when there was meal time. One time we were brave enough to visit the market in a nearby town, but the cab driver almost got us killed on the road to there with his crazy overtaking maneuvres.

No way I will ever visit north africa again. What a shit hole place.

Sadly many popular vacation destinations in my country (especially Zakopane) prey on the tourists at all costs. You pay extra for everything (even parking your car can cost you a shitload of money) and the housing/food are often terrible. I always pick less popular villages and small towns without too many tourists - the people are more friendly and it's generally more relaxing to stay there.

I went on a cruise to Bermuda and a cruise to Alaska. I had fun off the ship, for what it was (going on excursions or exploring the tourist trap town they dump you in). But on the ship, it's bad food, bad entertainment, a cramped room, constant upsells, seasickness, the fattest people I've ever seen in my life, fussy gatekeeping like having to wear a wristband to prove I can get a drink.

I'd rather just go to an all-inclusive in Mexico or the Caribbean.

I felt the same way; the excursions were great, the boat itself was not. My wife, on the other hand, quite enjoyed the ship and would like to go on a cruise again. The owners of the company I used to work at would go on a cruise 6-8 times a year, they love them and are the reason I tried it in the first place. I'd rather go to a destination and relax.

Old boomers love cruises. I really think it's one of those industries that isn't going to survive the passing of generations, although COVID might have been a death blow before that.

Doubtful. I used to work ground transportation for a cruise terminal. There are still a lot of young single people that go, as well as families. COVID might be a blow, but it was doing okay before that.

Fun fact: Hustler would charter a cruise ship once a year. The parking lot would be full of used condoms after the ship departed.

Going to Disneyland.... its like Disney World (which sux) but in Southern California (barf) and small as shit and has a worse parking setup that changes with the wind. Oh and to add shit frosting on top... during one of stupid 5K races where a bunch of overweight people pay money to walk a 5k and get a medal to show off.

^^^ That is my hell.
