I'm surprised no one's responded. I think Apple's website is one of the best designs out there. Macromedia's site is nice, and it has a Site of the Day feature in the showcase section if you're into Flash.

There's a nice listing over at www.coolhomepages.com.

Unless you're really good at qualifying what makes a usable site, i'd recommend reading a book, like Jacob Nielsen's book "Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity". Or you can visit his site www.useit.com. It's not the prettiest site nor the cleanest, but it's extremely accessible and it loads quite fast.

Edit: The usability category is best, although some of the entries may have updated designs that don't hold up to their ratings: http://www.coolhomepages.com/cool-pages/web-design-pages/Usability/1.html

Not sure if this helps, but check out the stuff on this site:

I’ve noticed a trend among myself and others who are into web design. Whereas we used to go ga-ga over anything Flash-y, now we prefer nice, tight HTML. After while, the eye-candy gets old, and then comes the need for some basic functionality. Plus going to HTML certainly helps in getting picked up by search bots, which is always a plus.

Yourself and others in to web design are way too slow then. As a web designer, I've always hated flash sites. All goes back to "Keep It Simple, Stupid."

Fuck trends. As long as your website is clean, usable, free of useless noodlings and nice on the eyes, there's no harm at all in Flash.

Newstoday was one of the first sites that came to mind, but it's not something i'd recommend for someone getting into web design. These are sites for creatives, not for mass consumption. The color schemes, layout, and navigation sometimes border on unusable. If that's what the original poster wants, it's a good site for it along with www.designiskinky.com, www.k10k.net, and the other usual suspects.

hey.. thanks guys, i thought this thread was completely forgotten about.

that newstoday site looks pretty nifty.

im mainly looking for blog-type examples..

a friend of mine wants me to redesign his website (he knows crap about websites).. and so id figure i should take a look at some tight designs to get some ideas since it has been a fairly long time since ive made one...

Bloggers? sorry, I don't tread those grounds. If you have a more relvent example to show, please do...

If that style of design has caught on among others I fear for society.

I'm a prime example of what NOT to do in web design. http://www.otaku-report.com is what I've been working on for a while. I'm not finished and content is missing...but there are a few examples. The header image will be random each time you refresh when I'm done, for different series. Yes I know I suck..but I tried to keep it simple.

You know exactly what I mean.

I'm not sure what you mean, and I've read this thread a few times just to get a handle on it. FN said he didn't like Flash sites.

(Right?)

Anyway, yes, this is true. The problem with Flash is that development time is often much, much longer than a straight HTML site. My ongoing battle with this whole "time" thing is perhaps best described with the Flash version of my portfolio. It *looks* great, it's designed to not only be easy to use, but easy to update, but since it's dealing with motion - and the fact that I have a day job - it's taking For-Fucking-Ever to get done; the last thing I want to do after a day spent in Photoshop and Homesite is *more* work.

I may just give up on it and integrate a much more straightforward version into my new blog design.
