I just got back from Vegas where I saw 4 nights of Phish playing, what I might consider to be the best 4 night run they've played since reuniting in 2009. The weekend culminated in a Monday night (Halloween) second set where they played Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in it's entirety for 17,000 people in attendance (including Ed from Radiohead and John Mayer, amongst other celebrities in costumes). All I can say is that at the end of Rock N Roll Suicide, there was not a dry eye in the the house. They absolutely nailed it in a way that I'm 100% positive David Bowie was looking down and smiling upon. I'll post a link once it appears on Youtube. It was one of the most special nights of my life...all 4 nights really. Best band in the world. There is no close second right now. Don't miss them next time they come through. They are now in their 50's and maybe sounding the best they have in their lives.

So happy...: )

The Phish from Vermont playing Ziggy!!!!

I've been listening to my songs in alphabetical order by Artist. I recommend A History of Scotland by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Ringo Sheena - Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana, Ze-Chyou Syuu. One album. One EP with some live material. Is there a cooler girl than Ringo? Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, but otherwise no.

The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys Today!, Pet Sounds, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!). I wish I wrote these songs. Those goddamn harmonies. Oh, I'm a smitten kitten. Lots of repeat listens to Good To My Baby and She Knows Me To Well.

I'm listing to kanyes discography for the first time. I think I have 1 or 2 left.

Really cool stuff. I liked 808 a lot.

I'm going to cash in my brave tokens and say Avenged Sevenfold. I've spent the last few months with the new Gojira, discovering Between the Buried and Me, BEHEMOTH, Mastadon, Sumac, and listening to A LOT of the Animal Crossing: New Leaf OS, but I have to say that nothing has hit me quite like Avenged Sevenfold's The Stage has.

I only preface my post that way because I realize a lot of people look down at the band as "mainstream metal" or "garbage", and it's not quite a deep cut like what I'm sure most of thread will contain.

That being said, I think the album is fantastic. It still sounds like them, so if you weren't a fan before, you probably wont be now, but it's definitely a little more off the beaten path and definitely a more experimental album for them. The fact that portions of certain songs strongly remind me of Pink Floyd I think says it all.

On top of that, the topic of the album is one that will become more and more relevant with each year. A.I. They've said that they wanted to grow an interest in the topic within their listeners, and hopefully educate, or at least put a little flame in people to educate themselves, and I think that's respectable. It's something that will completely flip our existence around in the coming decades, and we as people should be thinking about this kind of thing now. They even have Neil Degrasse Tyson give a monologue over the end of the album's final track, "Exist", which is supposed to be a musical re-enactment of the big bang.

It's really great to see them come back with such a great piece of work after Hail to the King. I can't say I know what I'd rate the album as a whole, but I will say that if you were a fan of the band post-Unholy Confessions and pre-Hail to the King, it might surprise you.

Why is there a comma after the "what" in the title?
Longstanding tradition based on a someone long ago making genuine grammatical errors, IIRC.

Although I do wonder if a better, proper title might encourage more engagement in these threads.

No it wouldn't because I made one of these and it made no difference.

OP, your lack of Hard-Bop is depressing

Was drawn by the album cover on the Nmesh record. See that the record is a split with Telepath. check to see what that guy is all about. What the fuck is his deal with his album covers? Some weird obsession with 80s Japanese/Chinese pop culture bubble gum BS? Fascinating. Also, the guy must never sleep. So many albums that it's stifling. Like almost reaching Buckethead level of stupidity... I'll have to listen to it all.

Look at those album covers

It's really a gamble with t e l e p a t h, I've only checked out split albums with him. His one with Nmesh and with Hong Kong Express. In terms of solo releases, I have no idea where to start. It makes it adventurous and exciting but also confusing and potentially time wasting.

Listening to Metallica's classics again because of Hardwired's imminent release. I also like the new songs.

But! I've also been blown away by Kate Tempest's Let Them Eat Chaos:

This is my aoty or close to it. Concept record done right, combining spoken word and hip-hop. As a thirtysomething having no clue what to do with my life basically, this album spoke to me like nothing else did this year.

Highly recommended, it's a real trip.

We Lost The Sea - Departure Songs

The epitome of nobility in the face of loss, sorrow, tragedy, and failure. Shit makes me tear up.

This album is incredible. I have the LP and the artwork is stunning and is beautiful to look at while listening to each.

Seriously a beautiful album. even more haunting is that they used to have a vocalist but he killed himself and they decided to continue as an instrumental band

I was considering buying the art prints for display in my house. They're gorgeous and so evocative.

I'd never heard about this band, but knowing that the singer committed suicide really puts it in a new light. Almost like the band is trying to process their loss through this album.

While hard bop isn't my favorite jazz genre I love several classic albums in that style from the 50s and 60s. It's just that right now I'm more interested to see if there's life in jazz after 1975 (and yes jazz is alive and well but you have to look much more closely to find the good stuff).
I wound't call put Mingus in the hard bop camp, though. On the first thing I liked about him is how much his sound and his structures were different from most of his contemporaries and the standard "head-solos-head" format of hard bop. Actually I would recommend to give a listen to the David Murray Octet album that I listed above as he takes a lot from Mingus.

Their third album, Death of the Artist, is in the process of being completed for a April release, with some crowdfunding to help them along since they're fully indie now. They've got kind of a world trip-hop sound. I remember GAF turning me onto their debut, Hybrid, several years ago. Big fan.

Syrinx - Tumblers in the Vault Holy shit this record is an incredible, deep-bin gem. Early 70s group with a Moog Dude, Bassist and Drummer. Wow.

The Wrens - The Meadowlands I've somehow avoided this record. It's pretty good if not imitated to hell and back now. Still the sequencing is something special. Need more spins.
