We've had lots of different game music threads, but I was thinking, we've there are a lot of original vocal songs made for video games over the years, and I figured why not have a thread highlighting some of the great ones. Only rules are the following:
Here are some to start us off:
Radical Dreamers - Chrono Cross
I fell in love with this song when I heard it, it fits the ending of Chrono Cross perfectly, and it was done by Yasunori Mitsuda, it's based on themes from the game itself, and is meloncholy and haunting. I still get goosebumps when I hear it.
Still Alive - Mirror's Edge
It's the other Still Alive song, and honestly it again fits the tone and feel of the game perfectly. It helps that the score uses the song as a base for a lot of its stuff. This doesn't feel like a traditional game tune, it's gorgeous, Lisa Miskovsky just kills it on the vocals.
This Silence is Mine - Drakengard 3
Another haunting tune. The vocals here are out of this world Chihiro Onitsuka's raspy voice is just perfect here, it sounds like someone on at the end of their rope, so much feeling. Then again, anything from Keiichi Okabe is just plain cheating.
Answers - Final Fantasy XIV
I love Uematsu, but honestly I've never been a huge fan of his vocal stuff, but Answers is not only a great vocal, but one of Uematsu's best tracks of all time. It starts off soft, and evolves into a rock opera. It's a shame that so many people don't know about this soundtrack.
Sins of the Father - Metal Gear Solid V : The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear has a history of great vocal songs, starting from The Best is Yet to Come, being totally awesome with Snake Eater, and just being fun with Love Deterrence. But Sins of the Father is my current favorite from the series. It just feels like it could be a 1980s era Bond theme. Donna Burke's performance is epic.
For Faith - Yakuza 4
The vocals for this one got cut out of the US release of the game, but once I heard this song I fell in love. It's Engrish as fuck, but who cares? It's just a blast.
Room of Angel - Silent Hill 4 : The Room
Akira Yamaoka is a god. No really his soundtracks and songs in the Silent Hill franchise are a high water mark in the industry. This is his best song. Disturbing and beautiful at the same time, like much of Silent Hill.
Burn my Dread - Persona 3
When you hear this song, you know that the soundtrack for Persona 3 was going to be special. Just a great damned song.
So there we go.
- It has to be a vocal song, of course.
- It has to be originally in a game, so no licensed music
- Also, no vocals from arranged albums, it has to be used in the game itself
