He just got a new Dell laptop. when we plug in the microphone i bought him, the only sound i get is when we plug it in and out. it makes a scratchy noise.

same happens when i try plugging in another microphone.


the volume properties on everything is correct. anybody else have mic jack malfunctions on laptops?

Slightly off-topic, but am I the only one who didn't know that headphones could be used as a microphone? I lost a $20 bet yesterday about it.

It's strange, but true. I was able to record into a boom box by speaking into the speakers (and no it didn't have a mic attached).
