What do you dislike about MMOs ?

Ok, let it all out. I wanna see if people generally sees the same flaws as i do. It's a genre of games that interest me but i'm yet to find one that really pleases me (World of Warcraft is pretty damn near), still i wanna see how much of an alien i may be.

Now let's rant (with some class please) ;)
 
Everquest: The insane level grind, and use of ultra rare spawns to ensure that players do not consume content faster than it is created.
 
Lack of real story structure and repetition of low-level quest conceits. Very tired of "killing gnolls for justice" in WoW.
 
I wish I could solo the whole game in one and not be penalized for it :) . To me the MMORPG are great to interact with people to buy / sell / trade goods. I also like to be able to group with others on my schedule. In World of Warcraft right now the guild I'm in actually schedules their raid runs like I do my meetings at work throughout the week. It's insane. :)

It's just that I hate other people, and I'd rather kill them outright (...online) than work together and go on stupid quests and share the loot and then sing camp songs. And then kill them.
Or something.
 
I think answering, "How can you improve MMOs," with, "get rid of people," defeats the purpose of MMOs. I mean...they are massively multiplayer. That's what they are. It sounds more like you want a single player RPG if you dislike working with other people...and frankly that is a rather populous genre on its own.

Now, I understand complaints about community. WoW, though, seems to have a pretty awesome community.
 
Played L2 for 2 years; Im tired of the drama of inmature kids and the insane level\equipment grind. Oh How I wish there was an L2 beat'em up tho. :)
 
I should never have to rely on other people to enjoy the videogames that I purchase with my money.
 
They were once actually about Mass Multi Player, abit of a challenge, community and goals that took longer then 3 months, had some immersive z-axis, etc. Now they all seem to hold your hand for ADD console kid that has to have instant gratification. I dont mind a split in the market but its like 99.9 all that crap. Its the equilavant of playing DMC and then the industry going back and changing to a two button nes game. Gold farming, bots as mentioned as well has trivialized this genre. When "mmogames" come out that dont even let you interact with world as well as 7 year old EQ, locking paths and terrain I cant help as long time gamer feeling its big back step. So that is what I dont like about current mmogames.
 
I don't have the time to dedicate to both an MMO and my other games.
That said, it always starts the same. I get a new MMO with my friends, we stay about neck and neck in power for a while, I start to fall behind because I have other games to play, so my friends become over powered compared to me so partying isn't possible and I lose interest.
That said, it's not that I don't feel the pull. At times I do miss UO, FFXI and WoW.
 
My main problem with MMO(RPG's) is that you can't really finish them. When I beat a game I want to put it back in my closet. For some reason that's very satisfying to me.
 
Things started well with Ultima Online, that game had a great vibe to it and it didnt require you to sink 8 hours a day into it to see rewards.

I havent played an MMO nearly as captivating since.

By far the worst part about MMOs.

Other notable gripes:

Rewards time spent over skill.
There is no role playing in these RPGs. The whole fantasy aspect is blown as soon as that hot elven mage comes up to you saying "Yo boi dis gam is awsum!". Even role playing preferred servers suck.
Costs money to play ONE GAME (as opposed to XBL)

IAWTP. When I was hooked on EQ I ignored so many other games completely and had to play every night for several hours just to keep up with my friends and guild. And even then I would always be lagging. It's one giant time sink. And if you ever pull yourself away you look back and go "WTF". Absolutely nothing to show for that time, money and energy spent. They can be fun in certain circumstances, but the things that are set up to keep them making money like the leveling treadmill are what ultimately turns me away.

All night NToV runs were one of the few bright spots in EQ for me. I loved raiding that zone with a core group of people. It was satisfying, but I'd never do anything like that again.
 
Not that I love Ultima Online or anything, but it's lame that they all copy everquest rather than UO. WoW started out pretty good, but now they are turning it into EQ with the raid content.

Yeah, I would kill for a MMO Game whose world would actually develop.

Oh that it turns out to be FUN at that.
 
My personal problem is that theyre essentially cut-down action games. I know this is mainly due to the limitations on a server, user connections and hardware, but I long for MMORPG's that match up to their single player counter-parts.

A key example of this would be the old Nico footage, of a group of horned youngsters teaming up to take down a Colossi. Realtime action and physics all round, not just clicking on something to attack it. I tired really quickly of PSO because after a while, it just became a rhythmic chore of attacking, running away, etc.

I want REAL real-time combat, which I know is possible from games like Jedi Knight 2, and mods for Quake 3 (like Bid for Power and whatnot). I heard Gunz was almost there for what I want, but still only PSU is the only mmorpg i'm looking forward to.

A PS3 Ueda developed real-time action MMORPG would be something that would have me paying £20 a month for, no doubts.

WoW was best when you could shoot through instances with 5 of your friends. Then at 60 you're forced to make schedules so 40 people can be on at one time to get through 5 hour dungeons....over and over again.

MMO's are well suited for social rejects that consider the game their life.

UO was flawed as hell, but I loved it. I just adored the whole exploration bit of it. I died and lost so much equipment and time, but I didn't care. I just loved going somewhere with a group of friends and finding this new spot in the world that none of us had ever seen.

I'd like a MMO with a fun and deep combat system like DMC. No level but a skill based system with all numbers hidden plus a huge world axed on exploration.

That's why I play on role playing server in WoW. It acts as a bit of an asshole filter. The kinda people I hate (like what you just mention) usually only play on PvP servers. Anyway, I'd like to see a new MMORPG that is more like UO.

This is what I hate about the end-game in WoW. It changes to a completely different game at 60. Isn't some guy from the EQ1 team now working on WoW? The fucker is ruining the game.

FFXI went in the right direction in one respect, with the ability to change classes when you wanted to.
Less of "let me log on as my X character" and more of, this is my FFXI character. I can do X/Y/Z and so on. Kinda reminded me of my D&D days.
And D&D online was a brief moment of excitement, until it seems like it turned into a turd.
 
1) None of them are content to just be good games. At some point, they'll all become 24/7 farm fests if you want to stay competitive.

2) The overwhelming majority of them don't focus on PvP, and the ones that do still usually manage to implement a horrible system. There is no other reason on earth to play these games other than to kill other people.

3) The overwhelming majority of them focus on PvE, which is utterly boring, and requires insane guild requirements and time expenditure (Hello WoW).

4) No matter what class I pick, I always end up with a gimp.

5) At any time your player may be nerfed into oblivion.

6) They pretty much all require FAR too much of your time. For what? For a piece of loot? Your life has to be shit to fall for this. At least more than once.

7) Requiring a lot of work and effort for something is perfectly acceptable. Assuming you can do it yourself. I realize the point of the game is to be social and play with other people, but it is exceedingly difficult to get X number of reliable people in a certain place at a certain time, consistently, to do the ridiculously tedious shit these games require. You can't just play, take a break, and play again. Your play is dictating by the availability of other people.

8) Having a good guild alleviates much of this, but not everyone can get in an great guild, and even then that only masks the fact that you are slowly wasting your life in front of your computer screen.

I could ramble on for ages. However, it basically boils down to this:

All MMOs are easily placed in two categories...

1) MMOs that start out shit and stay shit

or, worse

2) MMOs that start out decent, but then inevitably turn to shit, thus initating the "oh god, I've put too much time into it to quit" life-destroying cycle.

Most of them are fun, at least enough of the time to keep you playing, but mostly you are just playing in hopes that things get better, which they rarely do. Even when they are pure bliss, the time requirements are just too extreme.

The only MMO I have bothered to play for more than a few months really, was DAoC, which I played for 3 or 4 years. Of course, I was in a stellar guild on a RP server with the ABSOLUTE best community I've ever seen online (the average age of the server was probably near 30 -- far more mature than, say, WoW... ::cringe:: ). I was also in a stellar guild. I quit (and pretty much the entire guild, as we were all pretty like-minded when it came to the game) when Trials of Atlantis was released, because it turned the game into a PvE farmfest and pretty much fucked up what was the best PvP implemented up until that point by the mass zerging it encouraged (it was already bad before the expansion). My guild pretty much dominated PvP on our server... logging all of ~3-4 hours a night after we got set up. That isn't *too* much time to be /required/ to log every night, but is pushing it for a lot of folks (especially if you want to have a life outside of the game), and is easily the least amount of dedicated time of the MMOs that I've played.
 
Yea, WoW is an AMAZING game 1-60. At 60, the game turns into a farmfest that nearly rivals EQ1 in scale. Completely kills the game, along with the ultra shitty PvP... especially if you're the populated realm!!! Day+ rates for battlegrounds!!! (this may have been fixed since I last played).

Of course, this goes for pretty much every MMO ever. It doesn't take very long to get to 60 in WoW then find out the actual game is shit. The games that are cool to begin with but devs fuck up (inevitably) are the real annoying ones.

I will say that the PvE implementation in WoW is some of the best I've seen in terms of polish and execution, and it can be fun if you're into that kind of thing, but the time requirements make it off limits to pretty much anyone who wants to see the sun.

I just wish PvP oriented games performed better (and were better implemented) as competing against other humans is the only thing that can even remotely approach justifying the time required (and generally they don't require as much as their PvE counterparts).
 
I've only played an MMO for two months and I'm afraid to play one ever again. It's the first time that I thought a genre should be banned. That shit owned my life worse then Pokemon did when it first came out. Nintendo doesn't realize what a moneymaker a MMO Pokemon game would be...
 
I would also add the whole time spent vs. actual skill complaint, and, as alluded to in my previous post, the fact that they pretty much all boil down to (in PvP at least) who has the most people, as opposed to has the best people.

This is what made DAoC so addicting before Trials of Atlantis. A skilled group of 8 could kill a zerg of 80 that weren't half paying attention. You pretty much can't do that in any other game, and can't in DAoC now either (reliably, at least, unless things have changed).
 
Another thing they fucked up on WoW is world PvP. Thanks to the battlegrounds, there is hardly none. Sure it was annoying sometimes for all the quest givers to wiped out due to a raid on tarren mill, but it was damn fun fighting the alliance back.
 
It took me just over 50 days to hit 50 with my first character in DAoC... and I was one of the first 50s on my server/in the game. This was like 2.5 months after the game released... (sad, huh?).

Of course, with the proper setup you can level a toon to 50 in less than a day if you're extreme enough. Those options of course weren't available to start.
 
The reward is for time rather than skill

The MMO I've liked most is City of Heroes a lot of it has to do with the simplicity of leveling and items. Also the Exemplar/Side Kick system is very nice.

World PvP is fun, but ultimately in a world as large as WoW... you just can't find anyone. Though I suppose everyone did raid the same three places (hello LAG).

Of course, the BGs are implemented horribly in WoW, at least last I checked (no, I don't want to wait 5 hours for a 5 minute capture the flag game, go fuck yourself).

DAoC really had a good implementation, and even in it, on one of the absolute most populous servers, fights could be hard to find.
 
I've only played WoW, so my beef is that it is unbalanced due to biases hidden within the mindset of most players.

For example, the Druid is a highly versatile class. Very formidable too, I might add. A pain in the ASS to master. But I'd bet 90% of all WoW players just want you for the backup healer, and if you can't/won't? Too bad, you can't join the group!

Ridiculous. Blizzard gives them those other abilities and spells for a REASON. They spent a ton of time reworking their abilities and spells for a REASON. NOT JUST TO BE THE BACKUP HEALER.[/rant]

At level 21 I realized the hatred towards Druids was so bad that the higher level you are, the more you are asked to heal. I switched to warrior. Then I realized that WoW is really just a big level up fest. Level, level, level, level. It gets old after a while. I haven't played since.

It hasn't gotten any better. Plus there are too many ridiculous twinks that play the lower tier BGs. And it seems NO ONE plays 50-59 tier BGs :/
