It's about a pretty girl in a haunted hotel (in California).

It is likely a metaphor for something like seeking fame, and never being able to leave the limelight, or something to that effect.

I’m pretty sure it’s a metaphor about the consequences of chasing and achieving success in the entertainment business.

Hold onto your panties
Overplayed to the point where it's been off playlists of mine for over 20-years.

It's about the band members overall feel of the "good life" and times in Southern California under heavy cocaine influence during the early 1970's. I think the band had stated that a few times.

The great thing about artistic expression is that things can mean innumerable things. (I hate it when artists - of any kind - explain away the magic that is possible in interpretation.)

I think it's about the toxic elements of the entertainment industry in california. Including implicit addiction. I mean... Yeah, pretty clear on that...

ps. can i just say, knowing that these guys sang backing vocals for 'desperados under the eaves' and warren zevon's first album, that fact alone makes their actual band even more badass.

Probably about a lunatic that crashed his car while under the influence and dream all that stuff while slowly bleeding out in the car.

There's plenty of room at the Hotel California, but you can't afford the rent (can't afford the rent) so better bring a tent.

seems to be that it's about the dreamed of big living of being rich and surrounded by drugs/sex and living a life of excess.
Only to realise too late that it has turned you into a monster, or worse, a Californian. Dun Dun Dunnnnnnnn

I think its about a guy in a mental hospital, the beginning is him being driven to said hospital, the middle is about the staff, and the end is about him trying to unsuccessfully escape.
