Another playthrough of Tactics Ogre. Seems to become more addictive with each playthrough. Been about a year since my last, and I think I put in about 200 or so hours. One of those games you can't stop thinking about when you're not playing it.
Haha yeah I think I've played FF Tactics about 14 or 15 times... TO less so (elaborated below) but it's really for the same reasons: basically treating each new playthrough almost like a Dungeons & Dragons dungeon master. Come up with a story, a theme, unique characters, head canon, etc: god-hating mercenaries that all have low Faith to resist Magic and only use Item, Mediator Skills, etc (no Magic); zealous Knights (everyone must be a Knight main job or maybe everyone must have either Knight or White Mage as either Main or Sub; far-east mercenaries (there's a name for it IIRC... wonder if its the same name as the recent XIV expansion) only using samurai, ninja, oracle, etc. I've made playthroughs based on my MMO character headcanon; on the PS ninja game Tenchu; based on other FF characters....
But mostly just parties where I come up with headcanon lore for the game world though, like the aforementioned mercenaries (all recruited from a Trade City) or zealous knights (all High Faith from a church city). I do the same thing in TO: mercenaries, mostly Dark Knights and Dragoons and etc from Zenobia and Bakran; a pure nationalist knights and archers rebel party of only Walastans (Law route) or maybe a Law route where I make sure to have a blend of Galagastans, Walastans, and others from across Valeria....
Anyhow, I do like TO gameplay a bit more but I suppose I replay TO less so* just because it's a bit of a slower experience IMO. The smaller parties and maps in FFT really help the replayability... Sometimes I go with FFT instead of TO just because I want to get into some faster battles but also more smooth character development.
TO, especially the remake, with all its new class and level system, the crafting and itemization, is just a time investment... And, to be clear, I think that's why TO is overall better. I loved the new level and item system. I felt the new level system is really cool once I stopped thinking about 'leveling' people, and rather 'leveling' infantry ranks of my army... So, you level up your Knights, your Archers, etc.
And, the item system in TO is underrated one of the best twinking itemization systems since Diablo 2 ... it's not dominated by just linear better items (e.g. higher DPS every 5 levels)... but instead, low-level and at-first-insignificant items are some of the best in the game because they have special utility -- bonuses to damage type (e.g. piercing) or rare stat bonuses. And, the crafting system, as tedious and monotonous as it is for small +1 or +2 bonuses, is very Dungeons & Dragons or Diablo 2 esque in that small subtle bonuses on low-level items can give you huge advantages to low level characters....
Twinking out and leveling up new 'alt' classes in TO is probably my favorite 'leveling up a low level character' in almost any JRPG, SRPGs included.
But, that said, it all requires a ton of time... Is why sometimes I just go with FFT instead for replays.
(note: since the remake I've played TO a bit more... I have a dedicated PS TV on my LCD basically just for TO haha -- just, on average since the 90s, I have replayed FFT more)
