What has been your song of the year so far?

So we're half a year into 2025. It doesn't matter the year it came out…What song has hit you the most? What song has been on repeat? What song has you retreating to it after a rough day? What song has you constantly singing it?

Post yours. Post some info about the band. Post the lyrics or whatever else, why it means what it means to you etc.

I'm an approaching mid 40s post hardcore junkie and I haven't been able to get enough of these guys this year.

Badass album cover for the weebs

Wolf & Bear is an American post-hardcoreband from Sacramento, California. Formed in 2013, the band consists of vocalists Marcus Cisneros and Tyler Watt, guitarists Cameron Nunez and Louie Baltazar, and drummer Jacob Koval. The band originated in the Central Valley hardcore punk music scene aiming to "expand on the progressive rock genre."

I fucking love their melodic singer and the guitarist is fuckin great

You know there's nowhere else left to go
Our eyes don't meet like they used to
Whenever things start to be
In the back of my mind
Did I give enough time?
'Cause I don't know why
I don't know why I try

Simple and effective ^ it just works

Or what bands have been good from 2022 to the present.

We listen to more of older bands, but which ones are current?
I'm a big fan of Turnstile, if you like hardcore with a lot of genre-bending. These two songs are an awesome combo and give kind of a wide spectrum of what they sound like.

This album just dropped about a month ago and I can't get enough of it.

Personally he hasn't dropped a shitty album yet and he's been doing it for almost 30 years. I consider him to be the greatest lyricist ever, he's considered a rappers rapper. Also it's nice to bump into him every once in a while walking around town. I enjoy his music as even to this day I'll listen to a track from 20 years ago and I still get to decipher some of the meanings behind the lyrics.

"No Pole" - Don Toliver

Simp-ish lyrics, yes, but I absolutely adore the sound production for this song.
Getting drunk and high while vibing to this piece of music has been a very relaxing experience for me this year. Especially during times of stress.

From what I understand, the sound was inspired by Travis Scott and I can believe it.
I love it.

A few that often pop in my head:

- Out In The Street by Bruce Springsteen.
What a simple silly premise yet it always fills me with joy.

- The Trooper by Iron Maiden.
Because of Steve Harris.

- I've been loving you too long by Otis Redding.
When an artist just gives his whole heart and soul.
It's both beautiful & painful to listen to.

- Soul Sacrifice by Santana.
You gotta have some hot sweaty summer sex with this in the background 😄

Yeah I don't know lol. More and more I'm drifting away from picking a singular choice per year. I dont have a clear front runner. Figured you guys might enjoy my nominees list at least.

Best concert this year was definitely Japanese Breakfast.

I hate pretty much all new music but i had one of those music generators build a badass set of songs about the emperor of man in the style of a sabaton song. They were silly fun. I should go find them again.

Even the songs I think are "new" are like 3+ years old and often a decade or more.

I don't have time to listen to new music I guess.

While it's true that mainstream rock bands have melted away, if you dig a little, you can still find great bands. Like:

The Lemon Twigs (classic 70s rock)
Opeth (melodic metal)
First Aid Kit (girl folk band)
Charly Bliss (girl singer, rock band)
Fleet Foxes (folk music)
Future Island (nostalgic synth pop-rock)
King Gizard & The Lizard Wizard (metal/progressive/rock)
Protomartyr (punk rock)
Idles (punk rock)
Gatekeeper (death metal)
HAIM (girl pop-rock band)
Ibibio Sound Machine (african folk/pop/rock)

Weezer is still going.
Foo Fighters too, their tribute album for their drummer was powerful.

And this is only rock/metal based bands. If you expand your taste, you will find tons of great new music.

There hasn't been any song within the past six months that you've heard that hit you in any way?

Nothing new, no. But, in the defense of music I dont listen to much so I'm sure there is lots out there that are good.

Music, even when I was young, wasn't a big deal.

You have impeccable taste.

I'm mostly a metal guy, but I do like electronic stuff. Jon Hopkins has been constantly in my mind for the last few months:

Not from this year, but has found its way to constant rotation of late. Also, I consider this the band's 2nd best track to date, behind Fake Empire.

In before people say my taste in music sucks, or people say "wtf is this shit"...I like what I like, and that just often happens to be Japanese girl groups.

I do a lot of my music listening on drives during commutes and what not, and while technically Ratatata is last summer's jam, I still find myself wanting to blast it every time it comes up on my random playlist.

I wasn't sure I liked Song 3 as much, but the more I listen to it, the more I'm jamming out to it.

Huge Perfume fan, so liking their songs isn't really a surprise for me, but both Flow and Moon came and went at release for me and I didn't really listen to them much, I was skipping them in favor of older tracks. However this year, it's like they both finally clicked with me where I've been singing them to myself when I'm just doing household stuff. (by the way, you're welcome for sharing Kashiyuka's amazing abs in the Moon video lol)

Last one, but I played Crypt of the Necrodancer's Hatsune Miku DLC for the first time earlier this year, and there were so many banging Miku tracks in the DLC, but this sucked me in so much that I started really sucking in the stage cuz I was focusing on the music more lol
