What is a good camera for about 200$ / €

Hello there,
as we are expecting our baby in the August and my old camera is dead, my wife wants a new one.

Budget is about 200 € (or $) and it needs to be light and "flat"/compact.
Thank you for your time!

Still or video? I am eyeing the HMX-U20 from samsung. It's $199, does 1080p, time lapse, 10mp stills and looks to be pretty small. It's listed on amazon to come out June 1st.

I am in the same boat to some extent. I have a D40 for stills but would like a decent 1080P cam for under $300. This one looks to be one of the better ones for a decent price but its hard to find a site that reviews them. Most sites I have found are either low end flip cams or high end $1,000 cams..

I have this canon model from 6 yrs ago and it is still going strong. 2 sisters and a cousin all have varying versions of this camera on my recommendation and I haven't had a complaint yet

I have this camera. Works awesome so far and it's built like a tank. No plastic here, all metal. Takes good pictures and decent video as well. It records video up to 720p which is pretty good for situations with good lighting, gets grainier in low light but you get what you pay for. I also have an older Canon DV video camera and it struggled in low light situations, FWIW. *Not a professional photographer so all of this may be well known or it might just be because these are lower end products*

Third endorsement. I had a similar situation (new baby daughter) and needed something good, compact, and cheap. This takes great pictures, has settings for fast-moving subjects (pets, children), and has nice video. I ended up using the video a lot more than I thought it would.

The most important thing is its compact form. It's easy enough to toss into a pocket/diaper bag and always have it ready, and with a new baby you always need it to be ready.

By the way, your wife may be pregnant from twins. For their sake, please stay away from volcanoes :D

My opinions:

Sony: Offers a lot of very thin cameras, but image quality greatly suffers because of the small lens and sensor.
Nikon: Plenty of features, and often has good image quality, though the quality varies between camera models.
Fuji: Often has great image quality, but an awful interface.
Olympus: Seems more focused on design than quality images.
Pentax: Has a lot of unique features, few which I really find interesting.
Panasonic: Lots of good features and decent image quality, but lacks decent design.
Kodak: Usually has average picture quality, with a very frustrating interface.
Canon: Has an easy to understand standardized interface, with generally good image quality. My pick for the best choice.
Everything else: Probably not worth your time.
