To me a hero is:

-Someone who puts the well-being of others before their own.
-Someone who is a positive influence on the life of another or others.
-Someone who survives through adversity and difficulty.
-Someone who became the best they can be.
-Someone who can realize the error of their ways and reform.
-Dave Grohl.

Or all of the above...but I have never known a man/woman that answers to all those criteria!

Speaking of celebrities being heroes...well my initial reaction would be "what a load of poop". However, if the actions of a celebrity can influence someone to improve their quality of life, then they are a hero. If David Beckham (for example) can inspire just one kid to kick a ball and become the best he can be, then he is a hero...as much as I don't particularly like him.

Nah but I think the word has kinda lost it's meaning through the years. To me the image of a hero is pretty much what you described, and you can find examples mostly in literature but a few in history as well. But today? Any scrub can be called a hero if it fits the agenda.

Probably silly to some, but Buffy Summers is my hero.
Buffy saved the world time and time again through grandiose efforts of selflessness and sacrifice, where she consistently put the benefit of her loved ones, and her community, before her own.
While not perfect, she always learns from her shortcomings, and picks herself up to become smarter and stronger than before. Buffy never gives up. She's an ass kicking demon slayer.
Often balancing duality between being human in the social and emotional sense, and being a 'chosen one' in regards to duty and strength, Buffy is exemplary in regards to the compromises we must make in regards to our self-interests in order to be an exemplar of harnessing the power we each can muster in the perseverance of a greater good for all.
