What is E3 showing you?

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
Yea, this will probably devolve into the usual console war bullshit, but I thought people might want to share a few honest observations if their into that....

-This is the biggest opportunity for the console makers to just flat out lie about upcoming hardware. No one knows much of anything yet. Sony seems to have lied the most and impressed the most. It seems REALLY fucking troubling that the next Xbox is launching in 6 months and no one thinks the games look that great and everything is running on early alphas. Nintendo is essentially walking around with an empty, pretty box and this funny lie seems the most honest to me. At least they haven't shown too many fake games or given questionable specs for people to lie to each other about.

-IGN is flat out unreliable. Whether it's their bad reviews, rip-off "insider" coverage, or sucking off to travesties like Perfect Dark or an empty Revolution. They seem to do everything possible to discredit themselves at every available opportunity.

-Zelda seems like the best playable console game. And yet....I may be alone in this...the whole werewolf thing is potentially a jumping the shark moment. More than cell shading. I crack up every time I think about it.

-The DS is a lot more interesting than the PSP at this show. Doesn't anyone think that's sort of odd? Where is the really good PSP software that doesn't involve racing or cars? The DS looks like it's about to burst with a flood of good software.

-Sonic Rush might be great but Shadow sure looks bad. Sega seems to be all over the place, but their games don't look that great for the most part. VF5 for the win?

-Collossus looks like the latest game in an increasing list (Killzone, GT4, etc.) that are suffering from being on the PS2 technically. They really need the next gen technically for some of their developers. And Killzone was never a good game, no matter how much you like the new movie.

-Don't you kind of feel like the bullshit sessions about new hardware has stolen the thunder from getting more immediate info about games we're actually going to play this year? That will probably change today and tomorrow but it's a little bit of a bummer since the hardware talk is so much bullshit.

- 1up has an unusably unnavigable site. Nothing is updated in a timely fashion and it's very difficult to determine if anything new has been added. (This is as true during E3 as outside of it.) Great writers, though.

- Gamespot's site design is almost as bad, but their E3 coverage has been decent thanks to the running list of new games they keep.

- IGN has the best site design by far of the three, but some of their writers really suck badly.

This E3 has shown me that:

- MS will always be #2

- Sony could shit in everyones cornflakes everyday for 5 years and still be #1

- Rare was a horrible business decision for MS

- Nintendo loves to give the middle finger to its fans

- People were born to argue :D

PSP was a waste of my money

Nintendo needs to learn to own consoles like they do handhelds.

Fake numbers make everyone belive.

There will never be a "insert word here" ATON!!!!1!11!

I don't think the whole wolf thing is any worse than a Deku Scrub, or a fairy, or a mermaid.

I agree on the PSP; where the hell's my software? I'd expect this kind of showing in say, the last year of PSP's shelf-life.

I thought the Zelda trailer is great, and definitely makes it look more interesting and original than the previous trailers did. The style is really nice, especially the disolving pixel things when you kill enemies in the dark world.

But yeah, the bit where Link drops to his knees turns into the wolf does bug me a bit. Especially at the halfway point of the transformation where you essentially have a wolf wearing Link's hat :)

Think I'd prefer a more instant transformation (using that pixel style or something), rather than a stereotypical werewolf moment.

-Nintendo finally figured out that absolute backwards compatibility (NES on) is sexy. Something they might have learned from the GBA and DS launches.

-Nintendo still doesn't know how to show just enough to get the media informed enough to generate hype for their wares.

-Sony has mastered their skill at killing (or drastically decreasing interest) in their early-out-the-gate competition by just showing off some (possibly pie-in-the-sky) overpowered tech demos.

-Microsoft is stuck in the crappy, truly unfortunate position of needing to show games for a console that comes out in 6 months, but needing to finalize that hardware as late as humanly possible to have enough power to compete against the other two for four or five full years. Resulting in a lot of underwhelming demo experiences.

-Zelda looks great, but I agree that unless the Wolf gameplay is absolutely innovative and AAA, it'll be complained about to hell and back by even loyal fans. Possibly more than the cel-shading was, thanks to the freaking weird horse-rider thing man. (Looks like Nibbler from Futurama, after being abducted by the borg).

-I thought the DS was only going to have shit games I wasn't that interested in, but I'm managing a list of about 8 games I'm for sure buying this year.

-I haven't seen a single interesting PSP game yet. I was really hoping there wouldn't be as long a drought as there was with the DS. Seems that's the case.

-PS2 has really, really aged well graphically, considering that the hardware was finalize a full 5 years and two months ago.

-GameCube seems to be the only console with an appropriately gradual dissipation of titles being released for it (Xbox has a dearth of nothingness, and it looks like PS2 dev is staying absolutely constant).

-Batallion Wars looks about 18 million times better than Advance Wars GCN looked last year.

-Geist is better too

-If Killzone PS3 looks anything like what was shown, I'm buying 4 copies.

Pretty much. Only now am I starting to look at the real games that are coming out, for the past 3 days I've been busy with the next gen crap.

- Sony is still the king of marketing...the fact that another company is out-FUDding MS, the king of FUD... continues to make me chuckle.
- Nintendo has finally recognized and decided to focus on their strengths as a niche company.

I agree with pretty much all that Musashi said. I'm split on the wolf thing, though. Tranformations are not new to the Zelda series, and I don't think changing into a wolf is terribly different from the Majora's Mask transformations. A wolf certainly sounds more fun than being a pissant deku shurb.

- Sony(ce) is going to be making huge losses for the next 3+ years.

- 360 has no chance against PS3.

- innovation and artistic creativity are buzz words; the industry is soley dependent on profit.

- EAD is the greatest development team ever!

- DS lineup rocks big time!

The show, as a whole, has been very underwhelming. All the 360 stuff are running on alpha kits, so this is not indicative of what the final products will be. Therefore, it would be premature and even difficult to gauge the 360's power based on what is on the show. Conclusion - shows promise but until I see the finished product on finished hardware, I can't cast a valid opinion on 360 so far.

The ps3 stuff that was shown looks extremely impressive, but like the 360 stuff, you can't really form any conclusive opinions on that as well. Some of the footage that was shown looked to be prerendered and some looked to be real time. There was a HUGE disparity between the prerendered stuff and the real time footage.

Disappointing to not see the Revolution there. Unless I missed it, I could not find it.

Next year's E3 is the one to go to, folks. There will be tons of 360 games out by then on finished hardware. I imagine the PS3 stuff will be out by then, and if so, there should be tons of games for that as well. Hopefully, the same will be true for Revolution.

mmm.. Handheld gaming is the future

I don't know. At least the future finally looks decent for the DS. I'd imagine there's about to be enough choice there where anyone could justify owning one.

Very dissapointing about the PSP, though.

I can't agree about the software assessment for the consoles besides GC above. It actually looks sort of weak given the amount of time it has left. But there are games I want. I actually think the GC games got more attention because the Revolution is still ambigious.

I see a lot coming for PS2 / Xbox over the next year. Probably more than GC. As a matter of fact I'm a bit stymied over the release schedule for Xbox. It makes the drive to remove it that much more mystifying. It obviously has found it's groove over the last year or two and has life left. I understand they have to launch early to be aggressive with PS3, but that's why their showing here looks so ridiculous to me (even with it's bright spots...there are some).

We're not going to know shit about the consoles for a long time but I guess we're already going to have stupid fucking debates about which console to buy Prince of Persia IX on. Fun. Thanks e3!

What E3 has shown me:

- Sony can shock even their fans with surprise announcements like the PS3.
- Nintendo is still, seemingly, clueless.
- Xbots love to cry together.

:lol

THere's plenty of games for the PS2 I'm interested in coming out, or announced. I suspect anybody pining for games simply hasn't looked at the full game coverage.

I'd still like to see some surprise announcements of US releases of cool Japanese games. Maybe later in the year.

E3 has shown me that we are approaching the point of diminishing return. This jump is NOWHERE NEAR the jump from the ps1 era to ps2 era.

I am actually pretty excited about the werewolf/wolf thing. Link being a wolf probably opens up for interesting new puzzle solving. I am not worried that it will turn out like Wind Waker. Zelda TP already seens to have so much more content than Wind Waker ever had, plus that EAD and Aounuma "promised" to make this game better than OoT. (going public with it)

I can't whole heartedly say BUY A PSP anymore. :(

I'm pretty excited about 360 games, though. Some of those look great....to be honest, I think part of my excitement from the 360 stems from the awesome support it is getting from PC developers. If PC gaming does fizzle out I wouldn't mind having a platform where they all go to and support.

DS impressed the hell out of me with the game announcements at E3. There isn't *one* PSP game announced at E3, besides MGA2, I'm truly exceptionally excited about.

Oh, and boo to Koei for running some stupid Dynasty Warriors DS trailer instead of showing some gameplay footage!

- MS should have purchased Sega instead of wasting cash on Rare.

- How stupid people were for even entertaining the chance that the first pic of Joanna Dark was a real time model from the game.

- Sammy should consider adding From Software to the family.

- Interesting PSP software isn't coming along as quickly as many people thought. Sony should drop the prices of the Pro Duos and take the chains off of the PSP. My interest in the thing is going downhill.

-That Nintendo is right about the state of the industry as it pertains to innovation, technology leapfrogging, and sequalization

-That Nintendo has no idea how to address these same problems

;)
