What is it about Nintendo that you appreciate the most?

For me, while I was never much into Nintendo games, I really like how they are keeping their biggest franchises, as their focus - evolving them, instead of abandoning them.

Getting new IPs is all well, but personally I always wished that game makers prioritize their classics, and then try something else.

Not that long ago I meant to get into Nintendo ecosystem from basically "start" with 1981 Donkey Kong, but life happened, and I had to put it aside - it is still at the top of games I want to finish sooner than later.

I appreciate what they did for gaming in the 80s and 90s.

Since then?

Their games. I, too, have grown to dislike this (along with most every other) company. They keep making baffling decisions, IMO.

EDIT: Companies as a rule have gone from "We want to make money" to "We want to make ALL THE MONEY." No problem with the former; the latter is off-putting.

I appreciate their dedication to the "fun" element in gaming.

However, I have to say, I don't find most of their games fun (except Zelda and Mario Kart). Plenty of others clearly do, though.

Guys. If you don't have anything terrible to say, don't say anything at all. Otherwise, a lot of people here will get triggered.

I think they have better game development quality than most.

1. Very few bugs on launch, games launch complete with complete software - this alone sets them apart
2. Innovative game design that is copied by most of the industry
3. Details in the games, like the combines in totk, that are entire games themselves, very few developers are smart or dedicated enough to allow you to attach a bat eye to an arrow and turn it into a heat seeking arrow just for 2 seconds of novelty in a 100 hour game
4. Technical prowess - Nintendo have pulled off some miracles in their day on underpowered hardware, but the fact that TotK performed like BotW in game but also had a physic engine that could be its own cad machine with ai logic, is something nobody else in this industry would even imagine to accomplish, for example BG3 is VERY similar to DOS2, but TotK did not actually rest on BotW here, BotW and TotK are two very different games in moment to moment gameplay because of the physics, so TotK does not feel like an xpak. ER is closer to DS3 and BG3 is closer to DOS2 than TotK is to BotW. They don't just let good enough be good enough, they go beyond
5. Xenoblade chronicles are the best jrpg series being made right now unless you count clair obscur and it's not even close. Atlus is second but honestly those games are very similar(metaphor had some good evolution, but come on, these are baby steps) with each xenoblade feels unique.
6. I'm also a big fire emblem guy and XBC + Fire Emblem are some of the absolute best reasons to be Nintendo fans.
7. Mario Kart is super fun and everyone in the family loves it, Nintendo also appeals to non gamers so Nintendo games are one of the very few times I can share my hobby with my family
8. Nintendo often allows for dual controls even games that you wouldn't think needed them, to allow another user to feel like they are helping. This is a cool thing that I don't want to see die in our industry.
9. Nintendo raised me and started my love for gaming
10. Most of the old games are also available on their console and the price of the yearly Nintendo sub is very cheap, I have only paid 25 dollars for it iirc and can play all old Nintendo games at my whim, and they also let me save scum with uploaded save files(not every console allows this just fyi)

So even if they aren't the absolute 100% best dev, they really are up there. They are one of the best, and as a gamer, games are all that matters to me. Metroid, Zelda, Smash, Mario, Kart, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Kirby, DK, Animal Crossing, Party, Mansion, Paper and to some Pokemon are all good reasons.

Console exclusivity and a seemingly higher standard in regards to first party software development. But that's about it atm.

Quality, someone else said sense of wonder and I thought that was a great response. Their games transport me to my happy place. I play on other platforms a lot more than Switch but man do I fucking love me some Nintendo. They lost me with Wii/Wii U and brought me back with the Switch.

Mario Kart. They create good gameplay but the rest is cotton wool. They seem utterly incapable of creating new or interesting narratives for their games, LoZ for example.

when i was a kid/teenager gameboy to gameboy advance were fantastic but as an adult i grew out of their games decades ago as i want games with story, narrative and substance.

Consistency of quality. Refusal to compromise even a little bit. Never chasing trends. Nintendo isn't quietly canceling GAAS shooters that have already eclipsed $100 million in dev costs like every other AAA outfit.

I dont like any of their games so it saves me money. If they made an actual decent game that ran above 20 fps 720p, I would have to actually buy it.

I like the gameplay focused approach they take with most of their games and how they keep their franchises fresh by introducing cool new mechanics instead of just improving the graphics and production values. The fact a game like Tears of the Kindom on the ancient switch has a more complex, fun and reactive physics system than anything you find on AAA games made for way more powerful consoles and PCs is honestly ridiculous IMO.

That said it's only a handful of their franchises I really like. Mianly 3D Mario, 3D Zelda, Xenoblade and Fire Emblem.

Bowser, joyful games, controls on top, consistent quality and polished games at launch (with vary few rare exceptions)

Their games age the same way great movies age. Nintendo is like the old Disney, except Walt (Miyamoto) is still part of the company. Every decade they put out content that is timeless. I'm just as excited to play Wind Waker and FZero GX on the Switch 2 as I am to play Mario Kart World.

And my toddler is already enamored with the Mushroom Kingdom. Nintendo has a product that will be shared with each new generation as long as they never lose sight of what makes their games great and unique.

The gameplay focus in their games. Metroid, Zelda, Mario, it has always been about the gameplay, and they're always either ahead of the rest or near the top in all their games.
The story can be whatever. I like that.

Super Metroid used to be my all-time favorite in this whole industry. For 30 years. Today Elden Ring is #1 but 30 years as the king is quite impressive.

They do a good job mixing up old-style (80s/90s/00s) games and newer games. Most of their games are bright and colorful but there's a lot of variety in the gameplay.

The great thing about Nintendo is how much they test their games before release, making sure the controls are good.

Video Games by Nintendo are about Fun and not political Agendas.

Video Games by Nintendo are always innovating and have a really high quality Standard.

Nothing. They suck ass. Their games aren't revolutionary anymore. At best they're just solid games, but nostalgia blinds people into thinking they're better than they are.

Nintendo before the WiiU era. Now absolutely nothing. I broke out of that bubble to find more variety of games instead of the same thing.

That they don't compete directly with hardcore platforms and therefore their consoles can be completely ignored by me.
