What is the best app to slow down your pc?

I just got Betrayal in Antara and stated playing it, but it is just too fast. I tried cpu killer but it is very jerky, is there an app that slows down programs smoothly?

Isn't there a program called MoSlo? I've never used it, but i've heard it works well.

MoSlo is the one I used years ago.

Also, that Betrayal game is far worse than Krondor. It's actually quite bad from what I remember.

i uh .. guess you could either downclock your processor or run superpi / prime95 in the background, then fiddle with thread priorities.

is it a DOS game? DosBox

otherwise: Windows + Azereus is a recommendation I'd like to second

Why.... would you want to do such a thing?
Never tried to play a old game? Many of them run REALLY fast...like...they run in fast forward at 200 frames per second

Some older PC games weren't designed to work on a timed, CPU-independent system for rendering and controls, they just run as fast as the PC can handle them. (Some were even timed just by how long it takes a specific model of PC to do a For loop.) Current PCs can handle things... suitably faster than older PCs could. This makes some games pretty much unplayable, as it's like trying to play them at triple speed fast-forward, often faster.

It's not just with regard to really ancient PC stuff, even Sam & Max in ScummVM has that highway sequence/game broken by a similar problem. I believe. (Still, you can get through it.)

I am using a program called "turbo", it slows the cpu down without making it jerky.

As for the game it doesn't seem so bad, the graphics and combat seem quite good, I haven't played far into the game though.

Funny-ass answer:
3DMark, lol!

Serious answer:
Holy fuck man, I started playing it last month. I'm just done with the second chapter...

Now, I faced the same problems as you, here's what i did:

- installed VMWare
- installed Windows 98 SE under it
- installed Betrayal in Antara under it
- used CPUKiller under Windows XP

Using *only* CPUKiller will net you the same result so Google it!

Antara is a great RPG but BORING AS HELL. The world is too big, the traveling is too slow and the motherlode locks are too difficult :|

man i wish i had new this CPUkiller thing existed, i had the same problem trying to play the original theme park (a year passes in seconds even on the slowest time setting), ended up writing a program that counted to a billion as quick as it could over and over again.

I have that game and remember playing with my new pc and the character went about 400m/h.

I have left it on overnight. Never had a problem.

Got a link to the actual issue?

Edit: Thanks to Dr. C, I noticed the fix I linked to was old and unrelated. They have a fix in the link below.

Basically, if you use tabs and have a page loaded that contains a lot of links, Firefox goes through and preloads the links, assuming that you might be clicking on them. This obviously uses a lot of memory.

Here's the firefox link talking about it.

http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/ben/archives/009749.html

"What I think many people are talking about however with Firefox 1.5 is not really a memory leak at all. It is in fact a feature."

Also, with the tabs, if you close a tab, the page stays in memory.

You do realize this fix is from a year ago, and a new version of Firefox (1.5) has been released. Are you sure that this issue hasn't been addressed at all? I have been using Firefox for quite a long time, and I have never had it suck up all my memory on my box. I have, in past versions, had it go computable where it sucked 100% of my CPU for some reason, but that hasn't happened with 1.5 with me yet.

[edit] I just noticed your edit. Technically he is right - its not a memory leak. You can tweak your browser as well to cache less. I, personally, have never had an issue.

The thread's strayed a bit, but I'll say that in trying to deal with the Twon-ha issue in Outcast, the only program that worked out of every one I tried was Microsoft's CPU Grabber.
