When did it come out and how old were you? Vinyl, cassette, CD, mini-disc, digital? How did you come to buy it? Do you still listen to it? Is it embarrassing for you to admit to friends now? Do you still listen to the same artist/genre?

Mine is Sixteen Stone by Bush back in 1994.

Bought it when I was in high school (I was about 13 at the time). All students in my grade were on some sort of day trip in a village near a skiing resort. A bunch of us went into the local music store and browsed around. I had some left over spending money from my parents, so to look "cool" in front of my friends I figured I'd actually buy something rather than only window shopping. I didn't really know what I was buying at the time, who the band was, what kind of music they played. I just recognised Glycerin and thought, "I like that song at least, so why not?"

Listened to it HEAPS when I first bought it. Several times a day. I even followed the lyrics from the inner cover of the case and eventually memorised all the words.

I rarely listen to it now. I popped it on a few months ago purely for nostalgic purposes, but otherwise it's completely off my rotation. It was ok to listen to again after all this time, but not really my kind of music anymore. I can see why I liked it back then though.

Not particularly embarrassed that I used to listen to it. I think it was a fairly good place to start back then for someone my age.

So nGAF, tell us what your first album is.

Ride the Lightning - Metallica

I was about 13 or 14 I think (twenty years ago). Loved it and still do.

Rarely play that CD anymore, because after 20 years its kinda fucked up. Fade to Black has become unplayable.

Californication by the RHCP. Got it when I was 11, first album, made me fall in love with the band, and they are still my all time favourite band to this day.

+ 1.

I still remember being in kindergarten sharing bunk beds with my older brother and he used to play this album on the bottom bunk. The intro to RTL is forever ingrained in my memory. It always brings me back to those times.

Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood by DMX (1998)

This would put me around 13 years old when I bought it (and despite what the Parental Advisory label might suggest, Nobody Beats the Wiz did not give a fuck) and I bought it because I remember liking It's Dark and Hell Is Hot (and "Ruff Ryders Anthem").

A few of my peers and I like to discuss how we at that age went through a "rap phase" that would have died out in high school in my "I'm (re)discovering The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc." phase before moving on into adulthood and entering my "I don't really care what I listen to as long as my ears don't bleed listening to it and it's not Justin Bieber" phase.

I don't listen to DMX or hip hop as often as I used to, but I do go back to this album occasionally because I love "Keep Your Shit the Hardest."

Kris Kross - Totally Krossed Out

Bought it from cash converters (second hand store) for $5 in 1995.
The song "Jump" was pretty popular where i lived at the time and hip hop/rap culture was considered to be cool. I got into it to be "cool" despite being possibly the whitest person alive.
I even had a pair of cross colour jeans that I may or may not have worn backwards at some stage.

Hahaha cool. Yeah Jump was really popular all over the world.
Do you mind me asking where you come from though? Because as far as I recall Kris Kross was already 'dead' (popularity wise) in 1993.

Warrant, Cherry Pie, 1990

Edit: shit I thought this was "first compact disc" you ever bought.

First album was a WWF soundtrack on cassette with all the wrestlers' theme songs.

On Cassette. Can't remember the year I bought it but it would have been on/around release, so.....late 80s. I have a vague recollection of buying it for under a tenner from the now defunct John Menzies.

It's still one of my favourite albums of all time. :)

I was 11-12 at the time. Up until that point I hadn't gotten into music that much, but after hearing/seeing the music vid for "Sad But True" I was hooked. So I bought this album shortly after and that was the start of my Metallica years. After hearing "Load", which was a disappointment (to me) I moved on to heavier stuff such as Machine Head.

I actually listened to this album last week and I still like it, but it seems kind of "tame" now that I'm used to heavier stuff.

Damn, 9 years ago...
I wasn't really into music until i was 14 or 15, preferred spending my money on comics or books.

I still like most of the songs on By The Way, but it's also album that started their downfall...

This post ages me in so many ways. I can remember buying 3 45's (does anyone here even know what I'm talking about?) in 1978 when I was 12. Life's Been Good by Joe Walsh wasn't too bad of a choice, I still enjoy the occasional listen when it crops up on classic rock radio. But, I also bought YMCA by the Village People and Copacabana by Barry Manilow. And yet, I am NOT gay.

Australia
Before the internet was so pervasive it would take a while for music, movies and fads to make their way here.
Also it was in a second hand store so the song was probably not being played much on radio when I bought the cd.
But to a 10 year old wannabe thug that shit was the bomb!

I remember getting the soundtrack for Men in Black on cassette for my birthday once, but the first album I bought myself (if I recall correctly) was Cowboy Bebop: Music for Freelance. It was a remix album with several spoken tracks (in English despite being a Japanese cd) that presented the album as a pirate radio station on Mars. It remixed several notable songs from the series including "Tank!" "Space Lion" and "Piano Black" to name a few. I bought it because I was a fan of the series and I enjoyed the samples I heard at the time. These days, I wish I just bought one of the actual soundtracks, though. I now own Blue, but it would be nice to have OST 1, No Disc or even Vitaminless. Despite that, I do enjoy listening to it once in a while and it has a nice cover art.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik - RHCP
Downward Spiral - NIN

Both on Tape.

I bought them the same day. I was 13ish. I asked my parents if I could listened to Downward spiral on the way home. My mother, who is kind of religious, didnt care for Heresy as much as I do. I still love both the albums.

p.s. My first cd was Pearl Jams Vitology. Still their best album.

First purchase must have been around when i was 11 years old. My dad was a huge fan so my only exposure to music was guitar and jazz, can still remember some of the tunes!

Another one for Metallica. I remember when I was at the store with my younger brother deciding between metal CDs. A man beside me recommended this. He was a genius.

Not the first album I owned, by any means, but the first one that I went to a shop and bought was this:

INSIDESI.jpg

"Insides" by Orbital. I was about 12 years old. Bit of an unusual first record, but I had heard "The Box" on TV and wanted to own it and experience more by the artist.

It's an incredible album - it does shift between moods somewhat so listening to the whole thing is tricky if you're after something that's specifically dark / uplifting / whatever. However, each track has a distinct personality and is a masterpiece in its own right. "Out There Somewhere" was just mind-boggling at the time, like nothing I had ever heard before, and "The Girl With The Sun In Her Head" still puts a smile on my face.

I'm proud that it was the first album I bought - Orbital are well-respected and this is one of their finest moments. I still listen to it today and it had a profound effect on what my future musical tastes would be.

I was 8 at the time.
I have bought really few music CD's as piracy was quite common in my country growing up, well it really still is. But i do go to live events for the bands i like. The Rammstein live event was awesome last year, going to the next aswell in february.

EDIT: as there is no dedicated thread to this, i can probably count the stuff i have bought on a single hand:
S.O.A.D. - Mezmerize
Rammstein - Rosenrot (dat cover style and art ! )
Rammstein - Liebe ist fur all da (more of the glorious same)
Korn - Untitled
Korn - Live at the hammerstein, koast to koast DVD
A bootleg Daft Punk bundle off US ebay xD - self recorded video DVD at Coachella 2006, and a Live audio CD from Paris Bercy 2007
Lastly - 50 cent - Curtis ( i still lol at this, bought to test the new car sub at the time)

Edit: proved to be more than that afterall, have only been to 3 live events in my Life of 22 years. Korn, The Prodigy, and Rammstein. All in my country aswell.

First album I bought was Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen in 1986. Was on cassette and I was six, my parents took me to see him the year before so I saved up my birthday money and bought the album :)

Its a bit corny these days but I have allot of fond memory's of it. Also allot of the choices here make me feel really old lol

my mom tells me i bought a run dmc cassette when i was 4 years old with some of the money i had. i don't even remember liking them but i guess i did.

bought this CD after an older cousin put me onto the glorious Punk Rock sensibilities of Cali's finest... Bad Religion.

I don't listen to much punk these days, but it certainly shaped my mindset + tastes at the time, and taught me to give everything a chance. Be skeptical but be open minded.
