what jrpg are you playing right now ?

What is a good jrpg for the PS4? Have not played jrpg:s for about a decade and I suddenly got a craving for one.
You can play Valkyria Chronicles Remastered for now. Star Ocean 5, Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, Grand Kingdom, God Eater Resurrection, and Atelier Sophie are all coming out in June.

I've been wanting to start this Chrono Trigger DS for a while because I haven't played the game in 15 years. Might start soon.

I'm playing Final Fantasy X HD on my PS3, played it for 11 hours so far.
The combat is great, but I'm not feeling the story or the characters.
Also, fuck the leveling system in this game, I hate it.

Alright never played a LoH game. Some one sell me on Trails of Cold Steel. I notice there are a lot of characters how is the story and character development?

Tales of Zestiria with Japanese audio and English subs. Loving it but confused by all the systems at the mo

I keep finding myself trying to play it but I can never get into it. It's odd because I've enjoyed all the others. Maybe I'll give it another shot with TZfix and Jap Dub.

It takes a while to get going, but once you get more party members it gets to be a lot of fun in my opinion.

Not sure if it counts, but Valkyria Chronicles. Blew through Trails in the Sky and started the second but I'm taking a break. Playing the second one on hard was a bad decision.

Legend of heroes: trails of cold steel on PS3

Its all terrible. Its cliche anime tropes and a piss poor presentation that borders on the side of early ps2 jrpg's.
A lot of people like it but I think that's just the jrpg devotee/enthusiast inside of them effecting judgement.

90hrs in and my experience was very dry.

I give it a 5.5/10. I didn't complete it but I'm 90 hrs in so I think I get to give a review. I don't think the end game is going to change my opinion.
The good-
-Battle System, and the Music which is generic yet decent.

The bad-
-Characters, writing, story, plot, graphics, art style, presentation.

This game is like an early ps2 launch game but without the aspects that make jrpg's good. This game cuts way to many corners to be considered good imo.

Playing FF XIII-2. Still pretty early in the game, just got the first artefact. So far it's fun, but I liked XIII as well. I want to platinum the trilogy because I'm a weirdo.

Breath of Fire IV this past Memorial Day weekend. Approaching the end of act 3
Just made it out of Fou-Lou's tomb
- while the end of act 2 brought a lot of interesting story developments, act 3 seems mostly to be the town-dungeon-town-dungeon paradigm with minimal story development. Still, the diversity of environments is very impressive.

I also bought Lucienne's Quest off ebay, so I'll be starting that soon! Really eager to play the only good RPG for the 3D0 (and one of the very few good games for it)

Radiant Historia; just finished this game a little while ago. Great jRPG with an awesome battle system and interesting premise. It scratched that 16-bit itch for me and can definitely hold its own when compared to the classics IMO.

Illusion of Gaia/Time; started this game today and I don't quite know what I expected but so far it's pretty basic. Active battle system, very linear progression and lots (and I mean lots) of dialogue.

Xenoblade Chronicles X; after more than 60 hours I finally received a flight module for my skells. I love this game but every session feels like a commitment for some reason so I only really play the game if I have at least three hours of spare time.

Not sure if I should start Valkyria Chronicles Remastered or try out one of the many jrpg's on this PSP a just grabbed for cheap.

Anyone have rec's?

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC

I'm sure I've missed some :P
If I wanted to recommend just one PSP game though, it would be Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. It's got everything: great story, deep gameplay, amazing soundtrack, and beautiful designs. Also, its replayability is through the roof.

Glad it seems like you're enjoying BoF more. It's not the definitive JRPG experience or anything, but I found it to be an incredibly solid game, with good characters, incredible art, and a really fun battle system with just enough depth. Someday I need to go back and do some of the post game content.

What type of post game content is there? I'm up to the final dungeon, but I want to get all the masters... and unfortunately one of them requires you to play the fishing minigame and score a lot of points (and if you don't get this particular master you are locked out of 2 others). I hate this minigame, it doesn't really seem very intuitive (apparently you need to time your button presses with the drums in the background song?) and I always end up catching the same fish over and over, which isn't boosting my score. Ugh, I might just say 'fuck it' and go beat the game.

Twist at the end of the 3rd chapter was pretty disturbing, game definitely took a bit of a darker turn with that.

Reading the FAQ it seems like after you beat the game
you can meet up with Rei and Teepo from BOF3 and they sell you items

Still finding demon gaze stupidly easy even with the difficulty turned up, when do random encounters actually start to hit for more than 1 damage?

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, Ys 7, Solatorobo, SMT4, Devil Survivor Overclocked, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, Superstar Saga, Crimson Shroud, Grandia, The Last Story, Tactics Ogre, Breath of Fire 3, Persona, Persona 2 Innocent Sin, Earthbound, Fire Emblem (Wii U VC), FF7, Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light, Inazuma Eleven, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, Opoona, Paper Mario, Parasite Eve 2, Rune Factory 4, Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth.

I've either started or want to start all these rpgs, but I'm paralysed by indecision.

I'm playing Digimon: Cyber Sleuth right now because I heard it was really good.
I'm just a few hours in, but it only seems decent so far. Maybe I just need a little more time to get into it...

I played Digimon and FF X earlier this year and those are amazing JRPGs. I can highly recommend them.

There are so many new JRPGs this month, but I have to finish Xenoblade first. After 40 hours in december I never touched it again, but today is the day for a comeback.

Yeah, didn't like it much, either. But I'm in one of my moods; hated pretty much every single game I've tried in the last month.

I've beaten Lunar Silver Star Story Complete. So now back to figuring out what to play next. I think I have it narrowed down a bit:

Crisis Core
Skies of Arcadia
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Lunar: Eternal Blue
Lufia 2
Dragon Quest 3
Baten Kaitos
Grandia
Dark Cloud 2

I would play them in that the following order to not get burned out (some are similar):

Lufia 2 -> Baten Kaitos -> Lunar Eternal Blue -> Skies of Arcadia -> Shadow Hearts : Covenant -> Grandia -> (...)

BTW, I really enjoyed all of those games. (except Crisis Core though it was okay). You're pretty lucky to play them for the first time!

I was considering playing Final Fantasy Type-0 or Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria next. But for Type-0, to get the best experience with the game from the get-go, wouldn't it be better get a save file from somwhere so as to have extra scenes in the story unlocked with new game +? Does anybody have a save file for it (on PC steam)?

Dang, died and lost 50 minutes of progress in Persona 3 Portable while grinding Tartarus. Feels like the game is winding down, 45 hours in, about to face
the 12th Shadow
. I'm sure there are more hours in store, but I'm ready to move on as well.

Phantasy Star IV
Never played this game before and after trying the first two, this one is the game that really keeps me hooked. The battle system is quick and it's fun to find out what each spell does. I don't truly understand the third option in the battle menu where you have spells that are used like items but I saw no shop that sells these?
Anyway, so far I saved these people who were turned into stone and I wonder how far I'm actually in the game. It looks like it won't take more than 10 to 15 hours to complete.

Xenoblade Chronicles X

Bought day one was not feeling it, confused by all the mechanics and what not. Made it to Chapter 4 and stopped. Tried to grind it out early because I hate the prevailing feeling of being insanely weak and doing little to no damage to even level 1 enemies. Played 24 hours then put it down.

Now restarted a new game to try again. Just beat chapter 5, still having mostly the same feelings. Hate the questing in this game more than anything but trying to stick with it. Not feeling how most quests involve Lin and Elma, but to progress the story you need affinity with the other characters too... even though they are less than side characters. Also tried to grind it out a bit by recruiting high level online characters to increase affinity and level up, still got my ass kicked by monsters lol.

Having such a hard time with this game. I like it but hate it. I want more but can't stand how I have to progress. Really wish I could throw in some cheats like max gold or x2 xp lol.

Trying to stick with it but I honestly don't understand most of the design decisions behind it or how exactly to play it.

-rant over- haha

Previously: Dragon Quest V
Right Now: PSO Ep.I & II
Coming Up: Xenogears? Skies of Arcadia?

DQV takes a pretty long time ta really get going. If it weren't for some of the story moments and monster recruiting I'd prolly but it below IV! Need a breather after it so I'ma cheese my way through both episodes of PSO! Haven't played Xenogears or Skies or Arcadia in forever so I dun really know which I wanna go with first!

Skies of Arcadia Legends. Only about 2 hours in. Not feeling strongly positive or negative about it yet.
2 hours? Hope ya start digging' it soon cause there's a looooong way to go!

Seems decent so far. However, the encounter rate is insane. Apparently it's better than the dreamcast version, but it's still pretty annoying.

Chance raise and almost always instant death via one spell is some of the worst game design i've ever seen.

I started up the DC version today and feel the encounter rate isn't high enough! But I've only just made it to the first island. I know it gets really bad in some parts later on x.x At least the DC's grinding is there ta give me a heads up! Instant death is terrible in every rpg it's just cheap random chance coupled with revival items almost always being expensive/rare. Near the end of DQ5 recently I left a town got into a battle, most of my party got thwacked an I had ta turn right back around! So lame!

edit: saw that one of my save files is at like 47 hours. long haul confirmed!

I still think SoA Legends is one of the best rpgs I ever played. However, the encounter rate really is annoying.

It takes a little while for the story to pick up, so bear this slow beginning
