what jrpg are you playing right now ?

LOVED that too, but we needed to see Aionios from perspective of Noah and others instead of them getting over shadowed by legacy characters.

So I'm personally glad they put Rex and Shulk on expansion rather than main game.

Great topic. JRPGs are a corner stone of gaming to me. Right now I'm playing through Star Ocean Second Story remaster and it's super fun. Motoi Sakuraba's music is freaking incredible. Honestly one of the best thing about the series.

Unicorn Overlord - finishing up the fourth area. I'm split on this game. As a 'not Fire Emblem guy' I like how much more in-depth this game's systems are. On the other hand, the array of options available is overwhelming. There's so much and it takes a while to figure out what's working and what's not. I can say I like that a quasi FF12-style Gambit system exists in something else. The game looks and sounds fantastic too: Gorgeously rendered models and backgrounds and so many of them too, and Basiscape does that field-battle music transition I love so much well. From every angle Vanillaware did it again.

Story is pretty whatever but that's the point? It's not-Fire Emblem. It's a little funny that Alain's the perfectest prince and leader who ever lived the instant you get off the starter island. The game gives you allot of freedom to go wherever you want so it would have to account for those variants of choices (which it does a little) but the game also doesn't seem too concerned about all that, just about having a good time so hey whatever man.

Can anyone recommend a good turn based JRPG on PS5? I've already played DQ11 and P5

Chained Echoes feels like the best genre title in years. I have a few criticisms for it, especially a localization that reads especially unnatural during the first few hours but it's a remarkably complete package otherwise. Solid writing otherwise - character and world-building - a good OST, and the combat system puts a good twist to turn-based combat which can often be let down by letting the player just find one good strategy to combat and letting them do that over and over.

Persona 3 Reloaded on Game Pass. Some of the QoL improvements over FES is pretty neat, as well as pretty quick loading times when travelling between same building.
But some things, I'd like to be able to skip faster like some mundane animations, like velvet room loading/opening animations or also fast forwarding during battles could have been faster. Non-skippable all-out attack animation too... but nothing major at all.

Varied environment in the Tartauros is nice as well, but I am having a bit of hard time recognizing some elements, but looking forward new environments from now on.
Currently just rescued Fuuka and got the new(?) special ability/outfit part that I don't remember it being there in FES? Maybe it was there already? Kinda hard to remember as it's been a while since I played FES - but being able to control full party member is definitely nice. :)

I'm very much op'ing myself (mostly to earn money) so it's been pretty easy breeze up to mid 40's floor. Thanks to more liberal language selection on Game Pass, I am playing in my native language - so that's making things go a lot smoother and gives me less fatigue in long conversations as I can read faster.

They also got some rough edges out of the music - but am glad that familiar old tunes are there, just better sampling - but I do kinda miss somewhat rough beats and tears from that sound in weird way. Nostalgia is a definitely a strong thing, that when I was playing FES years ago, it bothered me quite a bit.. but now I end up missing it. :)

I'm playing Paper Mario 64 and Star Ocean R. Both excellent.

Hell yeah, PM64 and go for TTYD after. Unreal how much they upped their game for the sequel. I've never played a Star Ocean game, but I bought Second R on sale for Switch the other day when it went on sale. I'll get to playing one of these days, the backlog struggle is real - especially with RPGs.

Currently playing Paper Mario TTYD, loving it. My wife just picked up P5R and so I am kind of watching her play through that/keeping up with her progress, having played myself a couple years ago.

All this Xenoblade talk is making me want to get back to the series. I played the first one a couple years back and really liked it, heard 2 is love/hate. I own that, Torna, and 3 just haven't gotten around to them. Should I plan to play X before hand? Not from a story perspective, I know it's unrelated, but from a gameplay one. Would it be hard to go back to X after, or is it different enough to stand on its own?

Started FF16. So far enjoying the setting design far more than any prior one.

It's like FF9 in being totally medieval, but without the silly art style.

The games feels just right between being very classic but keeping my attention. Combat is fast paced, difficulty requires some planning of your dungeon exploration. Story is actually pretty interesting and unconventional. Music is also pretty good, and battles are full screen and animated. I really love the gradients for the outside backgrounds during battles. Honestly, a pretty good surprise. I was expecting something very average, but I would say that overall, this game offers more than the sum of its parts.

I played this a few years ago but ended up quitting about halfway through because of all the game's difficulty spikes. I know difficulty spikes are basically a staple of old JRPGs, but this game seemed particularly egregious with them. Good luck!

I don't recall if I ever completed this game. I enjoyed it, though. I bought it at release due to Lunar being amazing and I would have bought any Working Designs game (or probably any Sega CD RPG). It wasn't quite as good as Lunar, of course.

The golden age of anime design.

FF16. I didn't finish it the first time due to being distracted by something else at the time. I'm really enjoying it, and I don't think that I'm too far from the end now. The option to travel immediately back to a quest giver is much appreciated. I'll probably pick up the DLC once I'm done. Or, I may try DD2 again following the recent patch.

Backlog, backlog, backlog.

There are some recent JRPG releases that have turned my head though.

SMT V: Vengeance. Pretty cool game, loved the original release and this one's even better.

But I've put it on hold until I beat Elden Ring's DLC (which is not a JRPG)

I only bought a 360 last year together with Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery and Lost Odyssey, three games I never played before. Only got around to finishing Lost Odyssey though.
You did the best one first, by far. Blue Dragon is ok but IU I honestly wouldn't bother.

Does Elden Ring count?
I'd say no.

Just my opinion but I think JRPG is a genre on itself, not just "any RPG made in Japan". I'd even go as far and say Elden Ring barely has any role-playing besides larping with your build. To me it's more of an action-adventure game.

I'm close being done with SMTVV and the game has been absolute blast to play.

next up is Visions of Mana and Metaphor when come out….it crazy how many high quality JRPGs we got this year.

People have raved about the Trails series for seemingly over a decade. I finally decided to try Trails in the Sky FC/SC and it just may be one of the biggest disappointments I've ever experienced in my 30+ year gaming history. I'm only halfway through SC but these two games are brought up quite often when discussing either the greatest JRPGs of all time or the biggest hidden gems of the genre and what I've experienced so far is a B+ tier game at best.

Persona 4 and 5 broke me. I feel like I have been desperately been searching for a JRPG fix that at least comes close to the mark and it's gone poorly. I worry that I'm never going to experience something that even comes close until Persona 6 comes out. The Final Fantasy 14 expansions are the only ones that have dazzled me since Persona 5 came out. I guess I'll try SMT Vengeance or Sea of Stars/Chained Echoes and pray.

Unicorn Overlord, but its not a JRPG, close enough I guess. Trying to force myself to finish it, playing on the hardest difficulty and ignoring classes, etc and its still way too easy. Also playing FF7Rebirth and Honkai Star Rail which are both much better games than UO.

Well, I am at the 30 hour mark and the Blue Dragon becomes more engrossing the more I play. I just got to some town populated by robots and the music is fantastic. The game reminds me of Dragon Quest, but the combat is much more interesting. There is no way I will finish this before the weekend, so it will undoubtedly be paused for Daybreak, but I'll definitely be finishing this one.

I snagged Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovery as well. I suspect all three of these games have their equal share of fans and haters, but they seem fine to me. I just want classic JRPG goodness.

Blue Dragon is the first HD game I ever played. The game itself is fantastic. Wish there was a sequel that wasn't on DS though and on an actual consoles or better yet Mistwalker should just make a new one for all current gen systems

Finished FF16 and on the strength of its story, voice acting and amazing setpieces it has become my favorite in the series. Above 10 and 7. That final boss fight was probably my favorite in all of gaming.

Playing Eiyuden Chronicle now and early going but already liking it a lot. Reminds me of Suikoden 2 heavily.

I know this post is old but just wanted to point out that this game is being released soon on steam. Though I think it's a port of an old mobile port. So who knows if it will be any good.

I loved vay back in the day.

That tornado boss was fucking bullshit. Biggest difficulty spike I've ever seen in a JRPG.

The final dungeon was bullshit too. It's filled with boss tier enemies + high encounter rate. There's one section where it's one huge room with a bunch of identical smaller rooms inside it and you have to figure out the right one by trial and error while fighting all these ridiculously hard battles. I finally rage quit at that part.

Luckily I somehow met a friend a couple years later who also owned this game and had a save right before the last boss. So I got to see the ending and close a chapter in my life.

(BTW Working Designs was notorious for jacking up the difficulty in the games they localized, pretty sure they weakened your party and reduced XP gain for Vay. They also added that "gold vortex" which was just some random treasure chest that took all your gold if you opened it…. Lost a good hour of progress because I opened when I first arrived at the town after a dungeon and hadn't saved yet. Assholes)

Put over 100 hours into FF7 Rebirth in Feb/March which is one of my all time favs now.

Now playing P3 Reload. I've already beaten the game twice before with FES and Portable lol.

After this definitely Metaphor in October and then at the end of the year it's a toss up between Ys X, Eiyuden Chronicles and Dragon Quest 3 HD.

Do check out the DLCs for 16 as they have some great boss fights and world building. Don't expect anything close to the Elden Ring DLC though...

8,5 hours into the first Trails in the Sky. Got most of the games in the series on the Steam summer sale, and my plan is to play through the whole series.

Also... gonna do the same with the YS series. 3,5 hours into YS Origin.
See you guys in 5 years.

I already had a season pass and finished both DLCs. Loved em.

Tempted to get Riviera: The Promised Land on Steam while it's on sale. It launched on July 16th with a bunch of QoL improvements. Not sure yet. Kinda wanting a good jrpg until Metaphor and the DQIII-HD comes out.
