Which release of it are you playing?
Also, of the 16-bit Final Fantasy games, IV is probably my least favorite. It's still good and it's worthy of respect because it's the first one to do a real narrative, but the gameplay isn't as fun as FFV (job system) and the story/characters aren't as great as in FFVI.
Original US release. My goal was to play the games marked as ff1 ff2 and ff3 stateside (1 4 6) in the way they came out in the west. Brad Shoemaker constantly talks about how ff4 is the best one (he jokingly says 2 i think which means it was probably the us release he played?) but I'm just not digging it. I don't like having zero control over my party and the game feels simple and mindless. In FF1 I had to play a really serious defensive game to make it through the later half.
In FF7 I actually did a gimmick run....
I set it to active mode and cranked up the speed as I always do, but I also made a rule that if I put a materia on a weapon or armor that I could only put that same color on the other slots unless i took the materia off. I make an exception for blue, where link slots are forbidden from any other materia type other than blue. It means I had to creatively set up characters into what amounts to job roles, and rotating characters became more convenient than moving entire materia sets. (Because of different materia slot layouts and linked slot combinations, I wouldn't progress to weapons linearly, and would be making decisions on what to equip based on who I was equipping it to. It also meant that characters had other uses beyond simple weapon stats, as a good materia layout on a character I wouldn't otherwise use put them in my party until I changed things up again) It's actually a really fun way to play the game and I highly recommend anyone else try this ruleset.
tl;dr rules:
1) Only one color of Materia on a Weapon or Armor at a time, with the exception of Blue.
2) Linked Slots (right slot in a link) are forbidden for anything other than Blue Materia.
This means, for example, that if I put comet on Cloud's Ultimate Weapon, that I can at max equip only 3 more green materia, and 4 blue materia in linked slots. This means Cloud can only have two types of main Materia colors, so if i want to take advantage of purple or yellow materia it means I have to give up spells or summons. For example I can have green on his sword and purple on his armor, or yellow on both. It creates really interesting combinations, actually. It feels really great to play as a challenge run in that it doesn't outright remove mechanics, but it forces you to make interesting choices and keep a set of equipments per character, rather than just putting the newest sword on each time. (Less Linked Slots and more Normal Slots ends up making a good casting item, so it sort of has that Job feeling to it with these self-imposed rules)
This makes the game really interesting to play.
