what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Adventures of Mana (Vita), Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS), Tokyo Mirage Sessions (WiiU) and Star Ocean 5 (PS4). And almost no progress in any of them, no time at all...

Yeah save file transfers too. It seems like a good game but not something I'm going full price on. It's third party which means it'll be on sale in a few months.
Got through it an had fun! Kinda wish the camera could be zoomed in abit and that menus didn't feel laggy. Those save data bonuses seem decent so I'll keep the demo around. 3rd Party game? Its a Segac game that alone condemns it to bombing in price and sales ;.; Good for me I guess, since I've got zero dollars ta spend on games this month.

Playing Tokyo Mirage Sessions currently and fucking loving it. Atlus has been improving their battle system with each new release and this one has the best one yet by far. The session combos are so rewarding and fun to pull off. The Rock Paper Scissors stuff from FE is my only gripe with the battles as imo it just feels alil out of place. But the game as a whole has been just a lot of fun. The story is really funny and doesn't take itself too seriously which is really nice to see.

I was really worried this would be a big let down. Pick this up if you want something to play while waiting for Persona, you won't be disappointed!

Actually want to pick Xenoblade back up and give it another shot after finishing TMS. Loving my WiiU nowadays.

Is there a chance Nintendo will put Xenoblade Cheonicles on the eshop or remaster it for Wii U/NX? Is the GameStop exclusivety deal stopping them or something?

I bought the Legend of Hereos games on Vita. Starting up this series. So far so good. Also bought Atelier Ayesha on sale. My first Atelier game.

God Eater PS4. - I am dying for a MH game on console, but not like this...

Star Ocean V and Tales of Zestiria - jRPG mediocrity of the early aughts returns!

Tokyo Mirage Sesh - eh...it's like a below avg SMT game combined with FE frills. I applaud the effort and sticking hard to the zany premise, but neither of what I really enjoy from either franchise is represented here. A lighthearted romp on its own but my interest is waning the deeper I play.

Xenoblade Wii is available on the eShop, it's only $20 and you can play the whole thing on the Gamepad.

I got 3 I'm thinking of starting. Bravely Default, Suikoden, Suikoden 2
Of the 3, which should O start?

Bravely Default is awesome, it's tough to play another JRPG after BD though because you'll want every game to have high speed fast forward options during combat, the ability to change the random encounter rate.

So maybe Suikoden first, because BD is a way way more modern expierence than those two. Also: The OST is top tier JRPG stuff in my book. So many great tracks. The only downside is that game has an infamous middle game portion than recycles content for about a couple of hours. It's really over blown on GAF as to how much it ruins the game IMO. It's not good but you can speed through the section so quickly and get to the end game which is also very excellent.

It's a 9/10 JRPG, one of my Top 5 in the genre.

There's a demo, lengthy one, on the eShop. There's also a sequel released this year, I think it's pretty independent of the first, you could go straight for that.

I'm playing Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, but it's quite on/off -experience. I like the game, just don't have much time tok play nowadays.

Just got done with FE:Conquest. Currently playing SMT IV on 3ds. My first game into the SMT series. It's alright so far.

Dragon Quest VI on DS (well, 3DS to be specific). I always hate how it takes so long before they give you access to the class system in DQ games that have one...

XenobladeX but already getting bored after 20hours. There is just to many other title to takle.

ChronoTriggerDSBox.jpg

I got fairly far in this game when I was a teen, but stopped for some reason. I recently decided as a fan of RPGs that not having beaten this was kind of unacceptable. Only a couple hours in, but I'm enjoying it so far.

Hey I just finished Conquest too and was considering SMTIV.

Pleas post your impressions, I think Conquest was one of the finest JRPG experiences on the 3DS and I've heard others say the same about SMTIV...

I remember III had some hard fights, but overall, yeah.

The worst offender is probably V, sooo many overpowered characters lol.

It's not even the characters honestly, the passive Rune system is straight broken. You can equip 3 attack-boosting Runes that all stack (and as far as I know might even be multiplicative) and do that for 6 physical characters. The result is every boss in the game dies your first turn (usually after only 2 characters attack, 3 if it's a tough boss), except the end boss which dies in 2. They really should have limited you to one passive Rune per character.

Currently 6 hours into Trails in the Sky SC. Got it during the Steam Sale for cheap and I enjoyed the story of FC enough to keep going with it. Only beaten the prologue and the 1st chapter so far though, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to complete it before I dive into Monster Hunter.

Is it normal to feel nostalgic about a game you played a couple of months ago? Because going back to these old locations and seeing how things and characters have changed bewteen games is kinda doing that to me.

I remember the final boss being fairly difficult, I think I killed it with one surviving character.. maybe I was just underleveled

I am currently playing Odin Sphere on PS4 and Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam.

Currently trying to get M&L done this weekend so that my handheld gaming time goes to 7th Dragon.

I'm having a lot of fun with both games, Paper Jam was a pleasant surprise for me, it's easy but I think I kind of needed a relaxing rpg / joke filled script after all the long and serious JRPGs I've been playing.

TMS#FE about 20 hours in. It's been really fun so far. Overly silly and happy but the combat system is excellent and keeps me going. Have had some of the best boss battles in JRPGs with just enough tactical elements.

This is my first Megami Tensei game so I should probably finally start SMT: Nocturne and Persona 3 at some stage.

Of the 3, which should O start?

Suikoden (16-20 hours long and sets the stage up for 2), Suikoden 2 (one of the best games ever made), and then the first 4 chapters of Bravely Default.

I've been playing Atelier Ayesha for the past week. My first Atelier game and I'm enjoying what I've played so far. I'm mainly writing this post because the opening anime scene before the main menu is fucking awesome.

I finished SMTIV last month. A good game, also a flawed game. Now is the perfect time to play it because its sequel is coming out in September.

Started DQVI today outta necessity. No air conditioning + summer heat = me not wanting ta risk my PS2/3 melting! This weekend was not nearly as hot so I'm mostly through .hack//Outbreak and'll finish that before the heat ramps up again!

I'm trying to go through the first .hack// Tetralogy. I already finished Infection, but since it was a bazillion of years ago, I restarted from scratch.

God, it's the battle system and dungeon "design" bad. Makes G.U. games look like masterpieces in comparison. And the padding. :X We'll see how far I manage to go, I'm about to battle
Skeith.
(12 hours... god, this game so fucking short even with all the padding)

I know what the padding is in G.U. (tediously slow battles, towns/areas way larger than they need to be, tournament nonsense, chim sphere farming, etc.) but whats the padding in IMOQ?

I said before that I'd be powering through Revelations, but I'm all Fire Emblemed out right now - so a bit through Revelations but taking a break. (On the bright side, I'll have Warp scroll DLC when I get back to it!) I also scrapped the DQV plans and went for a PC rerelease (nearly finished Divinity Original Sin, not a JRPG but I try doing one game per console at a time, and it's my PC game and nearly done) - Final Fantasy VI. Played it to near completion years ago with a borrowed GBA version, but didn't finish it because feels. (And it still manages to be one of my favourite games ever) Looking forwards to finishing it! Though I reckon I may DQV at the same time...technically it's a DS game not a 3DS one 😉

Ys Origin.

I love the Ys games but this one doesn't really do it for me, it's not bad, but I don't think I'll be doing any playthroughs with the other characters after I finish the Hugo run.

The canon ending is the
third character
so you might want to replay at least once to see what it happens.

I finished with all three of them and it gets tiring.

There are tons, they send you to and end of the dungeon just to talk to an NPC and sometimes doesn't even advance the story much other than "go to check this other area, it has something interesting, I swear". Or that stupid obligatory sub-quest with Piros.

There is even a dungeon in which you go with Black Rose to check if there is anything interesting and you literally find nothing but a wall at the end lol. The story is pretty thin in this Infection.

I wouldn't even mind it that much if the dungeons weren't so bad.

A-RPG counts right ?

So good.

My favorite of the classic Ys games (and the best of the 3 takes on Ys IV), a nice meaty adventure with great music, challenging boss fights, and the greatest version of the 'ram into enemies' type combat.

Too fucking many.

Right now, on my Vita, I have installed:

Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy IX
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Legens of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines
Vagrant Story
Persona 4 The Golden
Ys: Memories of Celceta (physical card, actually)
Freedom Wars (physical card too)
Soul Sacrifice Delta
Gurumin
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Tales of Hearts R

Out of that list, only 3 of them have I beaten in the past (Trigger, Cross, and Persona 4). The rest are all first time plays, or returning to an incomplete experience to beat it. It's nuts. Right now I'm playing Stein's Gate and Oreshika concurrently, with the rest in various states of progress. I'm hoping to knock Stein's Gate off of my list so I can focus on Oreshika, then tackle one of the other RPGS on my list. Maybe FFIV.

EDIT: Oh god, and I didn't even include my PS3, PS4, and 3DS JRPG backlog...

Which release of it are you playing?
Also, of the 16-bit Final Fantasy games, IV is probably my least favorite. It's still good and it's worthy of respect because it's the first one to do a real narrative, but the gameplay isn't as fun as FFV (job system) and the story/characters aren't as great as in FFVI.

Original US release. My goal was to play the games marked as ff1 ff2 and ff3 stateside (1 4 6) in the way they came out in the west. Brad Shoemaker constantly talks about how ff4 is the best one (he jokingly says 2 i think which means it was probably the us release he played?) but I'm just not digging it. I don't like having zero control over my party and the game feels simple and mindless. In FF1 I had to play a really serious defensive game to make it through the later half.

In FF7 I actually did a gimmick run....

I set it to active mode and cranked up the speed as I always do, but I also made a rule that if I put a materia on a weapon or armor that I could only put that same color on the other slots unless i took the materia off. I make an exception for blue, where link slots are forbidden from any other materia type other than blue. It means I had to creatively set up characters into what amounts to job roles, and rotating characters became more convenient than moving entire materia sets. (Because of different materia slot layouts and linked slot combinations, I wouldn't progress to weapons linearly, and would be making decisions on what to equip based on who I was equipping it to. It also meant that characters had other uses beyond simple weapon stats, as a good materia layout on a character I wouldn't otherwise use put them in my party until I changed things up again) It's actually a really fun way to play the game and I highly recommend anyone else try this ruleset.

tl;dr rules:
1) Only one color of Materia on a Weapon or Armor at a time, with the exception of Blue.
2) Linked Slots (right slot in a link) are forbidden for anything other than Blue Materia.

This means, for example, that if I put comet on Cloud's Ultimate Weapon, that I can at max equip only 3 more green materia, and 4 blue materia in linked slots. This means Cloud can only have two types of main Materia colors, so if i want to take advantage of purple or yellow materia it means I have to give up spells or summons. For example I can have green on his sword and purple on his armor, or yellow on both. It creates really interesting combinations, actually. It feels really great to play as a challenge run in that it doesn't outright remove mechanics, but it forces you to make interesting choices and keep a set of equipments per character, rather than just putting the newest sword on each time. (Less Linked Slots and more Normal Slots ends up making a good casting item, so it sort of has that Job feeling to it with these self-imposed rules)

This makes the game really interesting to play. :D

Does UNdertale count as a J RPG/J ARPG from a gameplay perspective? because I am about to start playing that game, if not, I am still working on Xenoblade wii, I've spend 100 hours and I made it to alcamoth (I have a problem with moving forward if there are still lots of sidequest waiting to be completed in town)

Wow 100 hours in Xenoblade and you haven't finished it? Don't ever play Xenoblade X, it may take you 100 thousand hours to finish that one...

Random thread hijack but does Xeno X's combat get more interesting than MMO'ish hotbar combat? On a keyboard this works for me but using the Pro controller I'm having real issues.

Just started Randiant Historia. I'm around 2 hours in and I'm really enjoying it. The story is pretty fun and the combat is refreshing with the grid system.

Just gave up on Star Ocean 5. The first couple hours of the game made me think the reviews were way too harsh on it. But after spending more time with it...I just didn't care about anything. Bland characters, bland story, little explanation as to why you should care about what the story is giving you. Some annoying design choices make the game part more annoying than the other games too.

In a way...it really was worse than SO4 for me. I finished SO4. This I just couldn't be paid to care about it after 15 hours.

Next JRPG won't be until FFXV probably.
