what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Tactics A2!

Great game with the best artstyle. Way better than fftactics:WotL. I couldn't even get passed the opening in that game. Everytime I start it, I just go "nah this ain't for me". Then I found this sunnuvagun!!!!


A2 is superb. Music is great. And they don't try to pull of this hybrid of 3d and 2d like wotl. Wotl looked really ugly to me because of that. A2 just looks so consistently good!


I will also be playing:

+devil survivor 2 (3ds version!) For the first time

+Shin megami tensei 4 (I'm trying to start this game for the 3rd time now because the story and characters look like something out of the legend of Korra - which I hate... will try to stick with it)

+SMT: strange journey. Restarting this masterpiece later. Love the atmosphere and suspense in this title. It truly spooks me how creepy this game gets sometimes! I love it! You never know what is gonna happen next! You feel like you are going on a wild adventure with your squad!!!!!

You want story yet reject FFT and Tactic Ogre (I think you mean Tactic Ogre because Ogre Battle is not a SRPG)......

Give them a try, the system is not complex and the difficulty is not that high. If you really don't like them:

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on GBA, its sequel on DS. All the Fire Emblem games except Awakening. Devil Survivor 1 and 2 on DS, or their remakes on 3DS (I haven't finished these two games, they might be tough).

I hope you like back tracking bogged down by random battles. I had to drop this game because it was getting OUT OF CONTROL at one point. I may revisit this title later because I love the setting and the idea of being a space pirate.

The main character also isnt annoying like typical jrpgs.


Some things that bother me:

There is a character early on that can wipe out a whole field of enemies in one move. She doesn't even have to use much resources to pull it off even. This broke my immersion early on. The combat is better than dark cloud 1 and 2, but the AI partners are so fucking stupid. 2 fucking steps forward, 20 fucking steps backward.

...Holy shit I think I'm getting mad. I'll try to make this quick then: every time you meet a boss, expect it to be a 1v1 battle. Your partners are toast because they are total tools.

Edit: item fusion is dope. Level 5 never ceases to make an awesome item fusion system. If you played dark cloud 1 and 2, you know what you're getting into partially. It is a lot better here. And there is more stuff you can craft.

It would probably be wise to list what systems you own so we can recommend accordingly.

I am not rejecting anything, I just heard they are long and complex and I am not willing to dedicate too much time to a game i am not sure I will enjoy. I want to play a couple of light ones first. And sorry I meant Tactic Ogre.

Also I prefer handhelds for rpgs. I have psp, gba, nds,3ds and vita

All those games are on handhelds. FFTA is a great starting point, can't go wrong with that one.

FFTA is a great choice, you will probably enjoy the fantastic implementation of the FF job system. It's very addicting making your merry little band and challenging the other clans for turf. Story is also quite good.

I recommend you start with FFT; it has a PSP version (War of the Lions), and it's not honestly that much longer or more complex than FFTA, it's just better, especially storywise.

I mean, yeah, it's a pretty long and deep game, but it also starts out pretty strong. If you've played through the first chapter (which isn't terribly long and is a pretty self-contained story) and don't like it, you can stop there. It'd be a shame to start with one of the lesser installments and never play FFT because you didn't like them, though.
 
Currently playing Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for the first time. Just started Ch. 2, I'm liking it so far. The characters aren't terrible (thank god there's no silent protag), the plot moves at a nice pace and I even enjoy doing sidequests. The battle system is also neat with all the positioning.
 
Did some more Private Actions and sidequests in Star Ocean 5. Gonna probably finish the main game tonight. Also started on I Am Setsuna, which seems pretty cool so far. Simple and with a somber mood, though I'm worried the lack of environmental diversity will get to me after a while.

Nothing going on this weekend so I'll probably play both games a whole lot.
 
Using NG+ on Crisis Core this time since I didn't on my second playthrough!

With how fast battles end its been more cutscene than gameplay through the first two chapters lol. Doubt I'm gonna redo many/any missions I'd previously done, except maybe character related ones. So this oughta end up being another super short rpg!
 
I've been having a terrible habit of starting game after game and not finishing them lately, but the titles I'm planning on going through are:

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Final Fantasy XII IZJS
Earthbound Beginnings
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D

And those are just the ones I'm actively interested in playing right now. I still have Pokemon Y, Bravely Default, Shin Megami Tensei: Soul Hackers, Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross, and a replay of Shin Megami Tensei IV in mind.

I thought the VA was pretty strong in Vesperia. Gameplay is a bit stiff compared to other games in the series but it'll open up and get more fun the further you progress.

Currently playing:
I am Setsuna - pretty chilled (pardon the pun) and relaxed game. Battle system is great and story seems decent so far.

Star ocean 5 - just completed, it was ok (big fan of star ocean too!) but this was just ... Forgettable?

Tokyo Mirage Sessions - on the final chapter and wow has this been a big shock for me in terms of gaming this year. Enjoying my time immensley with it, yes even the story. Battle system is godly.
 
I'm currently playing through Xenoblade Chronicles X (Just got my mech) but I'm also playing Final Fantasy XI and Demon's Souls.

Funnily enough I think FFXI and Demon's Souls really compliment one another as they're both games with rich atmospheric worlds and deep and sometimes opaque gameplay systems.

But he said story was important to him. I could never recommend either FFTA or A2 to someone if that's the case.

I would definitely go with FFT: WotL. I think Tactics Ogre is arguably better but it's a bit more complex and dry than FFT and is better played afterward.
 
I've finished Xenoblade Chronicles X earlier this week, it took me 104 hours and some of that time was mindblowing, some of it was good and some of it quite bad. Overall I liked it less than the first game but it was well worth my time.

I'm also playing Persona 4 Golden and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE in parallel, it's crazy how much better TMS's battlesystem and pacing are but it lacks the interesting characters (so far) of Persona 4 Golden and it's way more streamlined.

When commuting I'm playing Fire Emblem Birthright which IMO has a couple of annoyances (castle-town, weapons that have unlimited uses) but otherwise is shaping up to be one of the better Fire Emblem games because it brings great classes to the table and the maps are in general more interesting than the ones in Awakening.

Lastly I'm well into Illusion of Gaia on the SNES which is a simple yet enjoyable action-jrpg. It does away with many 16-bit jrpg conventions and streamlines the structure down to a series of locations that you visit in order (you can't actually revisit locations once the story has moved on) and battling enemies basically comes down to mashing buttons.
 
I've played through Tokyo Mirage Sessions pretty much whenever I could when I was home, so I beat that in about 85 hours or so after a few weeks.

Getting back into Trails in the Sky SC now.
 
I just realised I only finished 2 jrpgs in the past ~10 years... FF13 and FF13-2.
Didn't finish FF12
Didn't finish Star Ocean 4
Didn't finish Lost Odyssey
Didn't finish FF13LR
Didn't finish Eternal Sonata

I should go back and finish them
 
Playing Pokémon Conquest now! The early games nice an easy, an since I'm using a guide this time around hopefully the late game won't be all that hard either!

Ray Gigant looks so damn cool, but everything I hear about it is so negative. I hear it may come to PC though, so I'm gonna wait for that.

I'm playing Suikoden 2 very slowly. I've been impressed so far, but am having a hard time getting into it. Next will probably just be the new Pokemon games when they come out. Got my wife a 3DS so we can play together.
 
Got 7 kingdoms conquered in PokéConquest yet am only a few hours in. My first playthrough took alil over 19 hours so I guess there's much more stuff to come inbetween kingdom conquering that I must've forgotten about.
 
Persona 4 Golden...

Bought on august 2015, still playing maybe once every three months. 21,5 hours so far. I really don't know if I will finish it or give up. Love the dungeons, but all the social links, stuff to do, working, studying on a time limit is stressing. Is bad enough having to plan my real life to do it again in a game. And although I was enjoying it in the beginning, the anime cliches (I'm on the summer camp part) are making it unbearable for me.
 
Started Tokyo Mirage Session #FE three days ago.

Currently at the end of chapter 1/beginning of chapter 2. Really, really, really liking it so far. Battle system is great, it looks pleasant and I like most of the soundtrack. My only gripe so far is the fanservice and the load times.
 
About 12 hours into replaying xenoblade chronicles on the 3ds, currently at lvl 30. The 10 hour slog before the swamp place was as horrid as ever, but starting to pick up now that party compositions open up.

Tales of Zestiria and Disgaea 5 are both amazing. Fairy fencer F just came out too I think.

They arent jrpg but they are a few goods anine musou right now like Arslan and DQ heroes.
 
Started Stella Glow yesterday, put something like 4 hours into it, really enjoying it. It has been surprisingly easy if you're just trying to survive the missions, but going for the bonuses has been a perfect challenge for me so far - not too easy, not too hard. Can't wait to get home and play some more.

I agree with 6 being my favorite but 5 > 4 IMO. Feels good to see someone else agree, most seem to prefer 5 (which is of course amazing).

People seem to have a problem with 6 and I never understood why, second best in the series after 8 imo (haven't played 7 yet)

I'm replaying 5 at the moment on 3ds, the encounter rate is insane even by DQ standards...
 
Rogue Galaxy at the moment since it's back on new consoles.
The same feeling as a star ocean games, but with a good story (that was the let down in SO4)...
I'm around the middle (chapter7 I think), but I loose a lot of time completing monster hunt and trying to upgrade weapons
I'll Try SO5 or I'm Setsuna after.
 
Grinding Metal Scumbags in SO5 in preparation to tackle the Ethereal Queen in the bonus dungeon.

Also playing a bit of Setsuna too at night. There's something about this game that lulls me to sleep (in a good way), I think it's the snowy, serene atmosphere and the piano music.
 
Finished I am Setsuna, so I guess it's back to Star Ocean 5. In the midst of finishing up Dying Light on PC (I know, no a JRPG) so I can finally crack into Trails in the Sky SC.
 
After giving up on Tokyo Mirage (was at chapter 4), I'm almost done with Star Ocean 5 .
Il take a break after that since I'm going to Japan in about 2 weeks.

I will probably play I am Setsuna when I get back .
 
13 / 17 kingdoms conquered!

Game goes mucccch faster when you're not manually tending to all of your units every month. Hooray for finally learning what the delegate feature was! Evolved my Eevee into Vaporeon since honestly alot of my water pkmn are pretty bad/unevolved themselves!
 
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. Finally done with chapter 3.

The game is amazingly fun, but I really, really hate tournament arcs in jRPG and this was no exception.
