what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Right now, I'm suckling at the sweet teet of Tactics Ogre: LUCT. Rage quit a few times in the beginning, and now I'm in the post-game, worlding back to different anchor points, firmly addicted to the game now. Oh, what a sweet game it is. Didn't think anything could satisfy me quite so much after playing an umpteenth playthrough of FFT.

I've just started Chrono Trigger (DS version). It's the first time I'm playing this game and it's been more than ten years since I played a jrpg from start to finish, so I think it's time to give the genre a serious go.

So far my only grievance is not being able to move in combat, but I know it's nitpicking a bit and it's not actually that important, I can see I'll be used to it in no time.

Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii U, it was cheap in the eshop so i thought why not try this acclaimed masterpiece. Really liking it so far.

Man I would love to play that again for the first time. Greatest JRPG of all time. I wonder what Xenoblade 2 will be like...

Finished Xenoblade five days ago but I STILL CAN'T STOP PLAYING IT TO THIS DAY. I remember at one point when i was playing the game specifically when I was on the bridge to Frontier Village on Makna forest that I thought this game, this game has to have fell from heaven it's unbelievably goood. and I have just ordered the Monado Archives art book and can't wait for it to arrive :D
...

Xenoblade X soon but not after I finish at least five games.

You may as well start X , it's pretty independent from Chronicles, I don't think you'd feel any burnout going both back to back.

You will either love it as much as Chronicles or completely hate it , there doesn't seem to be much in between for fans of Chronicles.

Dragon Quest Builders and World of FF. I'm loving DQ so far. Very addicting and fun, much to my surprise. WoFF on the other hand is a bit slow and dull, but I'll keep playing. Great soundtrack tho.

Bravely Second: End Layer. I wish more JRPGs had its quality of life features, like the adjustable encounter rates, fast forwarding battles, and so on. So far it's a great sequel :D.

Suikoden II (PSVita) - Tinto Area
Earthbound Beginnings (Wii U) - Magicant
Breath of Fire (Wii U) - Romero

Usually I can't handle doing more than 1 RPGs at the same time, I think this is an exception because I've already played 2 out of the 3 (I've barely played Mother 1 before).

I never realized how bad the translation in Suikoden II was. So. Many. Spelling. Errors. But I still love it, especially the cooking mini game.

Earthbound Beginnings is a classic that you may or may not love. It's fine with me since I have save states. It definitely feels like a prototype Earthbound.

Breath of Fire seems pretty good but the shortcut names are hard to decipher. It can get hard at one point (the Soldier boss was nuts) but it's still a classic.

I would say it might be good to do a break. Xenoblade X is really similar to Xenoblade, so changing a little in the middle might be a good idea.
I'm in Xenoblade X for the moment and I love it. The exploration of the areas is really good. That's what I enjoy a lot in those games.

Trails in the Sky The 3rd. Been mostly been taking my time with it (a chapter a day), but really really liking it so far. Legit might be my favorite Trails game yet. Love Kevin as the protagonist and Ries is a really cool character to me. In the middle of chapter 4 atm and I'm curious what's next. :o

Nearing the end of DQ8 on 3ds. I've been doing some Metal King Slime hunting and a lot of alchemy. I think I should be set for the end game now though.

Nearing the end of Persona 5. It's a good game but I think I'm getting worn down by the long dungeons.

Started up Tales of Berseria yesterday and it's pretty good so far. It's nice having two other players with me.

Started Nier Automata in earnest and its dang good. Love this world. Combat isn't as great as I hoped as the time sinks in but its definitely 20x better than the first. Enjoying the main mission scenarios though. This is my main RPG at the moment I guess.

Wild Arms 2 is my portable of choice at the moment. I'm really getting into this one but maybe about 10 or so hours in. Writing is not great, but that seems to be pretty par the course in many PS1 era RPGs with questionable writing or errors in writing. Also amazes me how every dungeon and new area, not a town is just a series of puzzles lol.

Odin Sphere Leifraiser! also on vita is my side game to fire up every other day or so. Never beat it when I finally got it on PS3 now it was re-released and its even better. Put some time into it this weekend and hope to blast through it a chapter or three at a time.

All while playing all the fighting games dropping this summer @.@

So, for someone wanting to try Phantasy Star, is IV considered the best entry? Are I, II and III still worth playing?

I also want to give Langrisser a try, but I'm not sure if I should start with the genesis games or Der Langrisser on the SNES. I've heard the latter is supposedly a remake of 2? If so, should I play that instead of the original?

Persona 3. Thought I should check it out after really enjoying P5.

I'm enjoying it, but I'm not nearly as engrossed as I was during P5 at this point, a couple months in. It's also much more challenging, although I am pretty new to JRPGs

IV is amazing and I would say many feel it's the best of the series hands down. Played through it for the first time a couple years ago and it became one of my favorite JRPGs of all time.

It's the only entry that aged well IMO. It was my first time to play PSI-IV in 2009.

I liked it compared to I-III. Those were kinda difficult to play.

I put down P5 for Tales of Berseria. Social link stuff and day to day stuff is killing the enjoyment for me. Its sort of tedious in a way. I'm going to beat it one day though.

Man Velvet's costume is absolutely the pinnacle of trash tier.

Coming up on 20 hours into Tales of Berseria. While I quite like the characters, the combat is starting to wear pretty thin for me. It's not that it's bad, there are just SO many fights with very little variation in what I'm doing. Not sure if I'll end up finishing it.

I put 160 hours in Chronicles and from what I hear X is longer and since I'm a long-time fan of Xeno games,I would like to stay away for a while so I can feel the magic again when I start playing it.

Yeah figured so from the trailers I saw. I prefer taking a break rather than starting similar games back to back. I did that once and it killed the third part of Xenosaga for me and I had to replay it a few months later to really feel how amazing it was.

Finally finished dungeon 3 in Persona 5, my brain struggles to comprehend how people were finishing this game a week after release...

Just beat Dhoulmagus in DQ8 so about half way through? Can't honestly remember much of the game past this point

I swear I'm the only person who likes her costume.

I mean yes, she could easily just wear anything else and probably should but I love it and her black hair to match. Edgy af but I don't care, she looks cool.

Struggling to get into P5, which is weird because P4 is one of my faves of all time. I think I would just get on better with it handheld.

Conversely, loving Xenoblade Chronicles on 3DS. Which IS handheld, obv.

Does NieR Automata count? Just finished that and it's a serious contender for all-time great. Need to investigate Drakengard.

And still struggling through FFVII on Vita.

Drakengard 1 and 2 are awful, I can only advise not to listen to GAF on that one

Maybe it's just me that's wrong :P

Tales of Graces f

27 hours in, it's fun, but the story is a little dull

I feel like Cold Steel 1 and 2 still being fresh in my mind is making this game less enjoyable

Picked the PS3 version up a few weeks ago as a birthday present to myself. Still in the wrapper, but I'm very much looking forward to playing it. I did start it on PS2 quite a few year back but never got too far. Just having trouble putting Tactics Ogre down right now, but it's next in my line-up.

Playing Dragon Quest 9.

Dragon quest IX on DS.

Still my favorite DQ to date. So much fun, great characters and vignettes. So much incentive to work through all of the vocations, and insane amounts of farming for ingredients and post-game-grotto stuff to get lost in. Sunk so many hours into it.

Played through Drakengard 1 earlier this year. It's not my type of game, really don't like dynasty Warriors type stuff. I still enjoyed the narrative, it was well worth experiencing for some pretty interesting content.

Well. I just finished FFXV.

I actually would love suggestions from GAF. I have both World of Final Fantasy and the last Star Ocean on PS4 available. I can also look into getting Trails in the Sky 3rd.

What say ye ?

I'am close to finishing World of Final Fantasy, great love letter to old school Square games. Any game that lets you battle a Einhänder is alright in my book.

P5 put me in an old SMT mood, so I decided to finally finish the P1's SEBEC quest that I've been putting on hold for years.

Maki's parts of the story were surprisingly better than I remembered and the ending managed to be a bit emotional, but a great part of the game still largely suck and Kandori was even a worse villain than I remembered despite the cool look. Hard to believe the same people wrote P2's complex narrative in retrospect, though I shouldn't judge the game's story so harshly, it felt oddly experimental in some ways and I can see a lot of ideas that would later get expanded in IS. It still pretty bad though, ultimately. SQQ is still probably the best way to experience P1, I think.

I kinda feel like going through all of P2 all over again, I was planning to not replay it until EP PSP translation came out and they are always a bit of a chore to go through since I can't help but spend half of each playthrough talking to every NPC every time the story moves.

I would say The 3rd unless you are in a FF mood. SO5 is straight up bad.

Just started August in Persona 5. This is the longest a JRPG has taken me to finish in a while, but I love every moment of it.

I stopped at that point as well. The game isn't bad like you mention, but the combat is repetitive and the story itself is just ok.

Currently I'm going through 英雄伝説:零の軌跡 - The Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki. I decided to tackle it after I beat Trails in the Sky 3rd.

Legend of Heroes Trails in Cold Steel for the PS3. I'm REALLY enjoying this game and loving my PS3 again.

Ys. Getting used to the bump system. Is there a faster way of leveling up? These blue goblins are kicking my butt at level 1.

I'm playing Bravely Default right now.

It's so good. Might actually be my favorite jrpg now, purely on the strength of its battle system. Actually the story and characters are just okay, but the battle system and boss fights are so fun and more than make up for that.

The main interesting part of the battle system is the "brave" and "default" system which allows you to save your turns and later use multiple turns at once. It gives you an extra facet of control over the battles which make battles feel fair where other games' turn-based battles would have felt frustrating. Winning battles usually comes down to learning enemy attack patterns and figuring out the correct moments to brave and default, turning battles into puzzles of sorts. It's really great.

Playing Dragon Quest II on Android and Dragon Quest VII on 3DS.

I really enjoyed the simplicity of the gameplay in Dragon Quest I. One hero vs. one monster. The advances in Dragon Quest II with the multiple party members and multiple enemies are pretty fun but the game has such bad signposting, there are a bunch of points in the game where finding the next location is pretty much chance.

Dragon Quest VII is fun, I like the island vignettes and the characters but it's such a bloated game. I'm about 40 hours into it and I can't imagine what the next ~30-40 hours could be about.

I'm definitely having fun with both of them but there are a couple quibbles with each.

Man I love Bravely! Glad to see others playing and enjoying.

I recommend Cosmic Star Heroine on Steam/PS4 when you're done. Great battle system like Bravely.

Well, IV it is then. I'll go back to I, II and III at a later time if I enjoy my time with IV. Are their stories connected in any way?
