I've never used the service before, but from looking at their website, I was wondering. I don't see too many banners so it doesn't make money to keep going through advertisement, does it? Does it make a comission off of stuff you sell/buy?

You pay for listings (They have free days every now and then to show you how much money you can make by selling your old crap) and they get bootloads of ad revenue aswell.

Christ... I answer these emails all day long... come home to relax and what do I find? This!

Ok..

If you want to know what you're going to be paying, there's a handy dandy fee table right here.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html

Basically the first table (Insertion Fees) are based on either the starting price you set or the hidden reserve price you set. There is also a Final Value Fee which is based on the amount it sells at. The %'s are to the right of the insertion fees.

You will also be charged for any listing upgrades you choose like extra pictures, themes, "Featured" listings and so on. Rates for these, can be found on that page also, by clicking the "Show" button next to each feature.

There are even selling tools you can subscribe to, to help you list.

Just a friendly warning, READ EVERYTHING. Everything you do on there is binding, since you're not actually Buying anything from eBay, you're buying from other members. Think of it like a global buy and sell. eBay is just a venue, and they'll help you out where they can.

But if you buy things outside of an auction, or send western union money orders to nigeria in an anonymous name for items that sound too good to be true (guess what...) then you can kiss your money goodbye because there is no way to trace that kind of thing.

Stick to the rules and guidelines and you'll be ok.

Just to give you an idea of how much ebay is making, I sell about 40 items per month and so far this year, I've paid nearly $1100 in listing fees and paypal fees so far this year. Ebay is making a KILLING.

Man, eBay is one of the biggest internet things out there. They're not a little website trying to pay for bandwidth with ad banners.
http://investor.ebay.com/financial.cfm

"For the full year, eBay generated consolidated net revenues of $2.17 billion, a 78% increase over the $1.21 billion reported in 2002.

The company expects that net revenues for 2004 could be as high as $3.0 billion."

Market capitalization of $63 billion.

too bad they have problems doing even that. Wasn't Paypal down last week due to coding errors?

Not to defend ebay or paypal but when you find an eletronic transaction site that handles their volume and is never down please point me to it.

Oh I know that. Paypal rarely goes down, or at least rarely went down, until ebay bought them.

According to paypal, last weeks outage was the result of adding new code. instead of rolling the code back to something that worked, they left it broken until they fixed it. Just seemed odd.
