What kind of shape do you need to play Rugby?

Well, I want to play Rugby this year... but I don't know If I fit the selection criteria.

I'm 6'4, 180 pounds. I'm not fat, but I'm not muscular either. I don't run very fast, like normal speed.

I just don't know where I could fit. Any ideas?

I've heard it's a rough sport. I suggest you try to put on some more muscle and probably work on your endurance.

Rugy players from the European leagues and stuff are always pretty fit, not too bulky. But those frat boys who play rugby in colleges are always fucking thick twats. :)

I had my knee kicked out of it's socket playing rugby in highschool. It stayed dislocated, and I had to get it pushed back in at the hospital.

The question isn't 'What kind of Shape do I need to be in?'.

it's

"What is my pain tolerance, and how tough am I"

Things like that can happen in every sport without leg protections.

Spear Tackling can not. Two guys lift you up by your legs and pummel you into the ground head first. Illegal but still happens. Not to mention the homo-erotocism of Johm Hopoate ;)

Haha...sounds like someone who's never been in a scrimmage when some jackass is trying stand on your chest with their cleats because the refs can't quite see what's going on.

My dad played too. 3 broken ribs 1 arm and 4 broken noses in 6 years of playing. Australia Rules football might be as tough - but not many other sports are.

nothing equates to someone biting your fucking testicles.

I swear, you have to be fucking crazy to play professional rugby.

No I've never been in a scrimmage. :\

But, well... I'll try just to see.

Rugby is a bitch of a sport. You don't just have to worry about your size, your stamina is the most important part I believe. There are VERY LITTLE stops in play.

Expect to get fucked up though, no matter your size. I was 6'4'' 280 when I last played and I still managed to separate my shoulder.

Rugby is great :D

But yeah, endurance is the biggest factor. People will say otherwise but there is not too many stoppages besides the usual line-out throw and perhaps a scrum that takes awhile to set up. Scrimmages are the pricks though, lot of bad shit happens but if something is going on, you may as well do the same thing back if the ref hasn't already picked it up.

I think with your height and weight as it is now, there's a bit of diversity - depending on whether you choose to buff up as a forward and practise your body to take hits, be insanely fit at the same time and the rest. Or concentrate on the strengths and skills of a back, agility, passing and kicking skills a must.

Definitely check the site that catfish pasted though.

Funny enough, that was a goal celebration during a soccer match last year. :lol

And there's no fucking way I'd play competitive rugby...the stories I've heard about what goes on in those scrimmages are just scary. The short time I spent playing the game at an English secondary school was good enough for me.

And even i am moderately surprised
i'm about 5 ft 6 and i played to a fairly high level (North of England + Cumbria )

I've been 5ft 6 since i was about 13, and i've played lose and tight head prop, move to hooker as i got slimmer and on a couple of occassions when i got faster around 16-17 out on the wing, but mainly i was a prop. Get ball , go straight, smash through/get stopped, get beaten up....

As mentioned , stamina/fitness is the big thing. The other big thing is toughness.

You are going to get stood on, you are going to get the shit kicked out of you week in week out, fingers in eyes, thumbs up arses, if you are a prop - your testicles sitting on some guys thrust arm in a scrum, people are going to run over you like you aren't there on BOTH sides - expect to sustain a lot of injuries from your own players - no one has time in a messy maul to dodge peoples legs , arms and hands.

I've been concussed more times than i care to remember, had my chest muscles ripped to the extent i thought i was having a (very) early heart attack, i lost part of a front tooth in training, black eyes, fights, loose arms in scrums, etc etc...

At least you wont have to play it out in shitty Northern English weather! ;)
